Barger, passed away at his home in Fincastle, on Sunday, January 18, 2004. He was preceded in death by his father R. J. Barger and his mother, Hazel Barger. Surviving is his wife Judy; his daughter, Melinda and son-in-law, Michael Amos; son, Ray and daughter-in-law, Jennifer Barger; sister, Bonnie and brother-in-law, Edgar Crockett; three grandsons, Blake and Brice Amos, Brent Barger; and step granddaughter, Cinnamon Amos; nephew, Chris and wife, Elizabeth Caldwell. He loved and appreciated the longtime friendships of Grant Childress, Lloyd Beckett, Tom Hedrick and Donnie Flora who he counted as family. Lawrence was a lover of horses and in the 1970's and 1980's trained and rode several champion Racking Horses. He was voted Virginia Horseman of the year in 1977. That love of horses continued as he volunteered with the Therapeutic Riding Association. He served on the Board of Directors for three years. He was the owner and manager of the Top Rail Restaurant and Lounge for 10 years, and later the Spurs Restaurant and Lounge. He was happiest when he could hear a good Country Band, ride a good horse, and hunt the hills of Virginia. He always said that he had been born 100 years too late, as he should have been a cowboy. The family would like to thank the staff of Carilion Hospice for their compassionate care during the last days of Lawrence's illness. A special thank you to his nurses, Larry Lewis, Pat Quarles, and also Dr. Alice Inouye, who took the time to show him the love of God. Funeral services will be conducted 11 a.m. Wednesday, January 21, 2004 at Simpson-Tharp Funeral Home, 5160 Peters Creek Road by Pastor Ken Nienke and longtime friend Billy "Slam" Duncan. Interment will follow in Fair View Cemetery, Buchanan. on January 21, 2004.³

Sergeant First Class Donald E. Walters (3rd Infantry Division 3rd AAA AW BN SP), served his country above and beyond the call of duty. He was a Korean War Veteran. Don was a Prisoner of War, Korean Campaign Ribbon with three bronze battle stars; received distinguished medals, serving Japanese Occupation, Korean medal, U.N. Ribbon, Purple Heart, and Good Conduct Medal. He had three tours of duty in Korea; fought at the Chosin Reservoir. He served his country with dignity, honor and protected many of his comrades. He received many accommodations from General MacArthur. Don was a member of the American Legion, and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #7854, Floyd, Va. Donald grew up in Christiansburg, Virginia where he played high school football. He believed in living life to the fullest and he loved life. He was preceded in death by his parents, Jessie B. and Nellie Walters; his sisters, Kathleen Collins, Dorothy Harris, Mary Lee Hedas, Betty Woolwine, and Barbara Walters. Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Jane Walters; children, Tony and Becky Walters, Don and Traci Walters, Jr., John and Pat Walters, William L. and Lori Walters, David Walters, Lisa and Doug Connelly, Heather and Joe King; grandchildren, Kelsey, Tara, Joci, Jace, Tiffany, Nicole, Chad, Danielle, Cara, Bridgette, Kristopher, Tyler, Trevor, Caitlin; brothers and sisters-in-law, Dan and Helen Walters, Dale and Pauleda Walters, Lonnie and Joyce Walters; brothers-in-law, Curtis Howell, Sr. and wife, Teresa, Amos Puckett; former wife, Joan Walters; and several nieces and nephews. Interment will follow in Roselawn Memorial Gardens with Military Graveside Rites by VFW Post #7854. on June 8, 2006.²

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Fdith Lorayne Merritt Kelley; three daughters, Mrs. Dick S. Bigham Jr. and Mrs. M. E. Davis Jr., both of College Park, Ga., and Miss Nancy Kelley of the home; five grandchildren; his parents of Germanton, Rt. 1; four brothers, including Richard P. Kelley of 3131 Reynolda Road; and two sisters, including Mrs. John W. Fare of Belews Creek. on June 9, 1964.⁹
