Graveside service and vault interment will follow the funeral mass at 2 p.m., Thurs. Feb. 6 at IOOF Cemetery near Rice. Rev. Robert McNeese will be celebrant. Mrs. Hirsch began her education in Rice, where she attended the first eight years of school at the Rice Country School. She then attended high school in Kettle Falls, wehre she graduated in 1950. Following high school, Mrs. Hirsch attended one year of buiness college at the Kelsy Baird Business School. She married Jerald Hirsch on June 8, 1952 in Kettle Falls, The couple moved to Colville, where Mrs. Hirsch worked for the telephone company and then for Louie Strauss at Barman’s. Once the couple began their family, she stayed home to raise and care for her children. In 1965, they moved to Quincy, where the family resided for five years before retruning to the Rice area. After returning to Stevens County, Mrs. Hirsch worked in the Stevens County Auditor’s office for over 10 years, followed by her work as Stevens County Ambulance coordinator for seven years. She enjoyed gardening and socializing, but her love in life was her family. Survivors include her husband, Jerald Hirsch, at the home; three daughters, Teresa Hirsch, North Carolina; Kathy Baumann and her husband Bob, Weston OR; Barb Jesnsen and her husband Gary, Olympia; one son, Mike Hirsch and his wife Jan, Portland; one sister, Betty Walker and her husband Gerry, Colville; one brother, Donnel McKern and his wife Alice, Rice; 16 grandchildren, one great-grandchild and numerous nieces and nephews. Memorial contributions can be given to the Quillisacut Grange and/or the Tri-County Alzheimer’s/Dimentia Interact Team (Tri-Co ADIT) 431 Corbett Creek Rd. Colville WA 99114. Danekas Funeral Chapel and Crematory was in charge of arrangements. on February 5, 2003.2

     Donnel "Don" Waldo McKern Donnel “Don” Waldo McKern, a longtime resident of Rice, passed away on Nov. 18, 2013 in Colville.. Don was born on Jan. 2, 1945 in Colville, the son of Morse and Blanche (Felts) McKern. Don was raised in Rice and graduated from Kettle Falls High School in 1963. After graduation, he attended Washington State University for two years. Don then transferred to Wenatchee Valley College, where he studied for one year until he enlisted with the United States Air Force. He served his country until 1971, when he was honorably discharged. Upon returning home, he helped his father with logging and farm work for several years. In May of 1972, Don married Alice Riley in Colville. Then in 1973 he started his career at Boise Cascade, where he worked mostly as a forklift operator until he retired in 2008. Don had very high morals and a strong work ethic. He also had a deep love for his family and spent many hours playing games and taking them on vacations. Don loved the outdoors and enjoyed hunting, fishing, huckleberry picking and hunting for mushrooms. He was very dedicated to serving the community and served as an EMT for 25 years. Don will be greatly missed by those he left behind.He was preceded in death by his parents; father-in-law, Lester Riley; sister and brother-in-law, Betty and Jerry Walker; sister and brother-in-law, Francis and Jerry Hirsch; niece, Teresa Hirsch; niece, Linda Walker; great-nephew, Travis Walker.Don is survived by his wife, Alice McKern, Rice; daughter, Sara Vanalstine and husband, Vince, Rice; sons, Donaven McKern and wife, Brandy, Coeur d’Alene, ID; Steven McKern, Rice; grandchildren, Daisy, Joel, Martin, Tucker and Riley, and numerous nieces and nephews.A memorial service for Mr. McKern will be held in June 2014, a time will be announced later.1 He was born on January 2, 1945 at Colville, Stevens Co., Washington.1 He married Alice Marie Riley on May 20, 1972 at Colville, Stevens Co., Washington.1,2 Donnel "Don" Waldo McKern died on November 18, 2013 at Colville, Stevens Co., Washington, at age 68.1

After high school, she worked for a time in Spokane before joining the U.S. Army. She served her country for 11 years before receiving a medical discharge. She returned home to the Colville area before moving to North Carolina four years ago. Teresa was a avid reader.      Ora Harlan Betterton was buried at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, 1712 S. Glendale Avenue, Glendale, Los Angeles Co., California.3,4 His Social Security Number was 564-34-7513.5 He Ora Harlan Betterton, aged 75 years, died at Seaside hospital, Long Beach, Calif., May 27, 1946. His death was the result of a paralytic stroke which occurred just 6 days previous. His daughters Arlyn M. Wheeler and Irma J. Enright were in constant attendance at his beds until the time of his death. He had been employed at the Los Angeles Breakfast Club until a short time before he became ill. At the time of his death he was residing at the home of his daughter Arlyn in Long Beach, Calif. He was the last surviving member of 10 children born to Gardener and Emily J. Betterton, pioneer Iowans. He was the 9th child, and was born in Knoxville on October 4, 1870. On May 5, 1900 he was married to Carrie B. McKern. To this union three children were born. His wife and infant daughter Velma preceded him in death. Besides his two daughters, he is survived by two grandchildren, Richard and Catherine Enright. Last rites were conducted in the "Little Church of the Flowers" at Forest Lawn Memorial Park at Glendale, Calif. The Rev. Mr. Griggs of the central Christian church of Pasadena was in charge of the services.4 He was born on October 4, 1870 at Knoxville, Marion Co., Iowa.1,2,4,5 He married Carrie B.
