Mr. Sparks was a member of the International Woodworkers union. His wife of 71 years, Reba L., died in November, 1997. Two sons, Richard and James Sparks, and one grandson, Joe D. Gillespie, also preceded him in death. Survivors include one daughter, Jo'an S. Davis of Vancouver; one son Ralph Sparks of Castle Rock; one sister Luella Boyd of West Virginia; five grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren. A private burial will be Wednesday in Longview. on October 26, 1999.3

She retired from a real estate office in 1991. She was past president of the American Business Women's Association and a member of the Pythian Sisters. She was Woman of the Year in 1977. She enjoyed music, particularly jazz and gospel, and played the guitar. She also enjoyed traveling, reading, art and crossword puzzles. She was preceded in death by a son, Joe D. Gillespie, in 1993; and two brothers, Richard and James Sparks. Survivors include two daughters, Lynda G. Steltz of Vancouver and Jeffi Davis of Milwaukie, Ore; a brother, Ralph Sparks of Castle Rock; and two great-grandchildren. A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Friday at Vancouver Funeral Chapel with Bishop Noph Marsden officiating. on August 14, 2003.6

He was born May 28, 1926, in Ada W.Va., to William and Bertie (Pennington) Gillespie. He lived in the Longview-Kelso area during the late 1940s and 1950s. Mr. Gillespie served in the Navy during World War II. He worked at Longview Fibre and Weyerhaeuser. He had a wonderful sense of humor and loved to play cards, especially cribbage. He is survived by two daughters, Lynda G. Steltz of Vancouver, and Brenda Gillespie of Sayler, Calif; a son, Harold E. Gillespie of Red Bluff, Calif; three brothers, William, Herbert and James, all in Virginia; two sisters, Janet and Freda, in Virginia; six grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were a son, Joe D. Gillespie in 1993; two sisters, Phyllis and Joyce; and two grandchildren. Interment will be at Willamette National Cemetery in Portland. on May 11, 2002.4
