Her Social Security Number was 223-22-2526.9 Carol Landon Anderson was born on January 13, 1923 at Danville, Virginia.2,9,3,5 As of August 8, 1951,her married name was Shawhan.2 She married Hubbard William Shawhan IV on August 8, 1951 at Danville, Virginia.2,4,5 Carol Landon Anderson died on August 14, 2007 at California at age 84.9,5 She Carol (Landon) Anderson Shawhan - Born January 13, 1923, daughter of John Buchanan and Carol Anderson (both deceased), in Danville, Virginia. Carol passed away on August 14. She was 84. Carol, or Baby Carol as she was known throughout her childhood, grew up in Danville, Virginia, hub of cotton and tobacco farming. She never lost touch with her Southern roots, whether it was the slight inflection in her speech, her cooking or her elegance, hospitality or warmth. Carol joined the Red Cross during WWII and served in France and Germany, acquiring substantial French and German as additional languages and a lifelong love of the Black Forrest. Upon returning, she met her future husband Bill (recently deceased), through a mutual friend. They fell madly in love and were married a year later. Bill was the love of her life and introduced her to the outdoor world. Carol embraced hiking, camping and travel with unparalleled enthusiasm. She was equally comfortable dressing up for an elegant night at the opera, or backpacking in the Sierras, sleeping on the ground and cooking fresh trout. Together they passed this treasure on to their 4 children. After retirement they traveled extensively throughout the world and their stories and pictures were enough to fill volumes of scrapbooks. Carol was married to Bill for 55 years. Their marriage and love was like a fairy tale, not that it didn't have its moments, as raising 3 sons and a daughter would try any mother's patience. Patience and love for her family was something Carol had an endless supply of and the phrase 'unconditional love' was defined by her life. Carol's Southern grace and manner often overshadowed her strength and courage. Whether it was handling the family when her husband was forced to endure 2 life threatening surgeries and long rehabilitation, or the first to speak up on a perilous whitewater rafting trip when most others were backing out with, "I paid my money to complete this trip, I'll be damned if those rapids keep me from finishing it", which of course she did, as well as apologizing for her slip of "French". Bill and Carol were active members of Saint Andrews Episcopal Church since 1962 and shared many wonderful experiences with fellow parishioners as well as bridge club members and many other friends. Carol is survived by her sons Bill, Tom and Bob, and daughter Heather, her grandchildren, Melissa and Michael Shawhan, Brendan and Hunter Collins, Bobby, Dylan, Cameron, Logan and Taryn Shawhan. She has two surviving brothers, Bill and Buck. Carol's love of life and family, her grace, elegance, warmth, courage and charm are gifts her family and friends will hold dear in their memory of her forever. She has gone to be with her husband and though we are left with immeasurable loss, Carol and Bill will be there as pillars of love and strength whenever we are in need. on August 22, 2007.5
