He risked his life to retrieve his damaged tank while his unit of the 702nd Tank Destroyer Battalion was being overrun by enemy forces in the attack toward Beffe, Belgium. They successfully drove the crippled destroyer to a safe position in the rear. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Melissa Jarvis; sister, Ruth Carte; and brothers, Ivan and Elvin Jarvis Sr. Surviving are his wife of 66 years, Nina Williams Jarvis; nephew and his wife, Jim and Carol Jarvis of Florida; nieces and their husbands, Jan and Donald Holcomb, Tammy and Buddy Hicks, and Carolyn and Larry McKinney, all of Charleston; and many other relatives and friends. Burial will be in Tyler Mountain Memory Gardens, Cross Lanes, with military graveside rites by American Legion Post 61, Clendenin. on May 25, 2007.⁵

     Cynthia Mildred Carnes Funeral services for Mildred Jarvis, 87, Ormond Beach, formerly of Palm Shores Mobile Home Park, who died Thursday, July 7, 2005, at the Bridgeview Center in Ormond Beach, will be Monday, July 11. Burial will be in Daytona Memorial Park. Mrs. Jarvis came to Florida from Charleston, W.Va., in the early 1960s. She enjoyed yard work, fishing, puzzle books and crocheting. A homemaker, she was predeceased by her husband Elvin, Sr; a son, Joe; her parents, Arley and Mollie Carnes, West Virginia; five sisters and six brothers. Her survivors include four sons, Elvin, Jr., Ormond Beach, Jim and Jack, Port Orange, and John, St. Albans, W.Va; two brothers, James, Houston, Texas, and Homer, Sr., Clendenin, W.Va; nine grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was buried at Daytona Memorial Park, Daytona Beach, Volusia Co., Florida.^2,1 Her married name was Jarvis.¹ She married Elvin Vernon Jarvis Sr., son of William M. Jarvis and Malissa J.
