She was 73 and a wife, mother and grandmother. Shirley was born on Aug. 8, 1935, in Phoenix, Ore., to Kenneth and Kathryn Newlun, the fourth of six children. Her family moved to Sprague River, Ore., when she was 2 and she lived there until she went to Oregon Institute of Technology in 1954 and married Kenneth Culp of Vale, Ore. In 1956, the couple moved to Livermore, Calif., where they lived, worked, and raised two children. Shirley dedicated her life to taking care of her family. She loved the family camping trips and being with good friends. She was an avid bowler and enjoyed the weekly card games with the girls. In 1990, Ken and Shirley retired and moved back to Klamath Falls to the place they had always considered home. Shirley died comfortably at her home in Klamath Falls with a most amazing, caring family at her side. Her husband, her children, grandchildren, two brothers and their wives, her sister and husband, two nieces, three nephews were with her during the week of her death. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents and sister, Doris Marvin. She is survived by her husband; two children, son Dan Culp and his wife Marylin of Klamath Falls and daughter Linda Culp of Klamath Falls; one sister, Luella Dunham, and her husband, Buck, of Hermiston, Ore; three brothers Buster Newlun of Klamath Falls, Vernon Newlun and his wife Pattie of Dairy, Ore., and Bill Newlun and his wife Donna of Las Vegas, Nev; and two grandchildren James Culp of Dublin, Ohio, and Crystal Culp of Sunnyvale, Calif. A graveside service will be held on Wednesday, Oct. 29, 2008, at 10 a.m. at Eternal Hills Memorial Gardens. on October 28, 2008.4

She was born Nov 3, 1880 in Manson Iowa the daughter of John and Adeline Carolyn Johns. She came to Yakima Valley with her husband, John, in 1924. Ten years later the couple opened Leonard's Nursing Home at 1126 Viola Avenue, the first of several nursing homes they were to own and operate in Yakima. She was a member of the reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was preceded in death by her husband John Leonard in November 1965 and also by a son who died in the early 1930's. She is survived by one son, Wayne Leonard of Yakima: one daughter, Mrs. Gladys Charlson of Tuscon, Arizonia; two granddaughters, Marchia Engquist of Yakima and Delores Durby of Phoenix, Arizonia; three grandsons, Dr. Jerry Leonard of Portland Oregon, Gary Charlson of Tuscon, and Keith Charlson of Glendale, Arizonia and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday in Keith & Keith Ninth Avenue Chapel by Elder Paul A. Anderson of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
