A U.S. Army veteran of WWII and Korea, Mr. Kirby was born on March 25, 1923, in Hopewell, Va. He was one of seven children born to Viola and Luther H. Kirby, Sr. In 1954, he moved his family to Roanoke when he became manager of the A&P grocery store on Salem Avenue. He was manager there until he became an agent with Home Beneficial Life Insurance Co. where he remained until his retirement. He was a member of Daleville Baptist Church where the love and support of his church family has been so important to him over the last few years. His parents, four sisters and one brother predeceased him. Those left to mourn his loss are his wife, Mary S. Kirby, children, Betty K. Grisso and husband Don, Marsha K. Faizi, Thomas C. Kirby, Jr. and wife Lynn, Karen K. Emanuelson and husband Paul; five grandchildren, Scott Grisso, Shannon Grisso and wife Mechelle, Daniel Kirby, Roxanna Faizi, Adam "Buster" Faizi. Also surviving is one brother, Luther H. Kirby, Jr. of Baltimore, Md., and many nieces, nephews and cousins who have been an important part of his life. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 4, 2007, at Daleville Baptist Church with Pastor Andy Cobb officiating. Interment will follow in Cedar Lawn Memorial Park.
