Viola (Shockey) Smith was born March 13, 1924 to John Shockey and Mamie (Kincaid) Shockey in Fayette County, West Virginia and passed away early Tuesday, July 2, 2013 in the Methodist Health Care Center in Clinton, Oklahoman. Mrs. Smith was raised in West Virginia and attended her schooling in the Oakhill School. She had to stop her formal education at very young age but continued to learn to read and write by using the Bible. She moved to Connecticut when she was a young lady to work in a needle factory during WWII. She met the love of her life and he was in the military and he moved her back to Cordell, OK where she lived with his family until he got out of the service. On February 4, 1942 they were united in marriage and made their home in Cordell for a short time. They moved to Clinton in 1946 where they lived for the rest of their married life and raised their five children. She was a member of the Arapaho 1stBaptist Church; she loved the outdoors where she spent countless hours gardening and working in her yard; she enjoyed her animals, fishing, collecting peacock feathers and she was a great cook and an accomplished seamstress. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1984, her parents, a sister, Ida Martin and two brothers Bill Shockey and Houston Shockey. She is survived by four daughters, Velda Jo Sams and her husband, Jim, of West, Virginia, Vonna Sue Phillips and husband Hoyt, of Clinton, Verla Beth Powers,of Arapaho, Vivian Rose Stockton, of Clinton and a son, Virgil Smith and wife, Pat, of Arapaho and a sister, Savannah Thrower, of CA. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, Danna Hillenbrand, of MT, Virgil Smith, Jr., of El Reno, April Stucker, of Arapaho, Amanda Pugh, of Fletcher, OK, Adam Bieberich, of Clinton, Crystal Snider, of Clinton, Melissa Hoffman, of Long Dale, OK, James Davis, of Clinton, Lori Murphy, of Arapaho, Sarah Claussen, of Thomas and John Lair, of Clinton and 18 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren.4 She was buried at Arapaho Cemetery, Arapaho, Custer Co., Oklahoma.4,7 She was born on March 13, 1924 at Fayetteville, Fayette Co., West Virginia.5,4,8 As of February 4, 1942,her married name was Smith.4 She married Virgil Neal Smith on February 4, 1942.4,9 Viola J.      Doris Jean Paris was buried at High Lawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill, Fayette Co., West Virginia.4 She Mrs. Doris Jean Paris Shockey of Fayetteville died on Saturday, May 19, 2012, at Raleigh General Hospital, Beckley, after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Born in Sanford, Fla., she was the daughter of Scottish immigrants, the late Peter and Jean Ann Milne Paris. At an early age, she and her family moved to Fayette County. Mrs. Shockey received her education at Fayetteville High School, Roanoke Business College, Marshall University, and West Virginia University. For forty-four years she worked in the educational field, first as an elementary school teacher and the last twenty years as a specialist/supervisor for the Fayette County Board of Education. In 1997, she was honored at the Greenbrier as one of seven outstanding Reading/Language Arts supervisors in West Virginia. She was a trainer of trainers for the drug program, "Here's Looking at You, 2000" and "Writing to Read." She was a member of the Fayette County Retired School Employees, the Red Hat Society, the Angel Group, Fayette County Study Club, Delta Kappa Gamma Society for Outstanding Women Educators, Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, and the ladies circle. Known for her inspirational devotions, she often was asked to speak at several of these civic organizations. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her son-in-law, Dennis Eye; and brother-in-law, James Arden Gravely. Those left to cherish her memory are her daughters, Bonnie Hill and husband, Howard, and Jacqueline Eye, both of Teays Valley; son, David Shockey of Oak Hill; sister, Catherine Gravely of Oak Hill; her granddaughters, Andrea Thornton of Teays Valley and Katherine Eye of Huntington. Funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 23, 2012, at the Fayetteville Presbyterian Church, Fayetteville, with the Rev. Greg Stone officiating and Pastor Richard Allen assisting. Burial will follow at Highlawn Memorial Park, Oak Hill.4 She was born on September 22, 1928 at Sanford, Seminole Co., Florida.3 As of September 2, 1950,her married name was Shockey.2 She married Jack Shockey, son of Dennis Madison Shockey and Sadie Grace Spangler, on September 2, 1950 at Fayetteville, Fayette Co., West Virginia.1,2,3 Doris Jean Paris died on May 19, 2012 at Beckley, Raleigh Co., West Virginia, at age 83.4

Mrs. Comer was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints, Beckley. She was a homemaker; she enjoyed sewing, quilting and reading. Surviving: her beloved grandsons and their wives, John and Della Nicholas of Fayetteville, James and Jodi Nicholas of Huntsville, Ala., and Joseph and Janet Nicholas of Fayetteville; 10 great-grandchildren; and seven great-great-grandchildren. Funeral services were Oct. 4 at Dodd-Payne-Hess Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Bishop Robert Doolittle officiating. Burial followed at Pleasant View Cemetery. on October 7, 2010.2

The body will remain at the funeral home. on May 18, 1964.4

Born July 16, 1924, at Fayetteville, he was the son of the late Robert and Emma Fox Martin. He grew up in and around Fayette County. Upon his 18th birthday George joined the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was in the Naval Air Force as a radioman/gunner aboard a torpedo bomber in the South Pacific Theater of war. After the war Mr. Martin returned home and began a career in construction, dealing in highway and home construction in the northeastern United States before owning a wall papering and home improvement business until his retirement in 1986. He was preceded in death by his brother, Earl Martin, a sister, Ethel Bailes; and his wife, Betty, the mother of his children. Survivors include two daughters, Donna Hamblin of Murfreesboro, Tenn., and Carol Rock of Farnham, Va; two sons, Benjamin Robert Martin of Berryville, Va., and Christopher King Martin of Purcellville, Va; two sisters, Zella Tallant of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Laura Wood of Fayetteville; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Graveside rites and committal service will be 1 p.m. Saturday, March 8, at Huse Memorial Park, Fayetteville, with a eulogy by Eddie Persinger and military graveside rites by VFW Post No. 3110 of Oak Hill. Visitation will be noon to 12:45 p.m. Saturday at Tyree Funeral Home, Oak Hill. on March 7, 2008.5

She was in retail sales before retiring and moved to Grottoes in 1979. In October of 1939, she married Fred P. Snell, who died May 16, 1979. Mrs. Snell is survived by a daughter, Susan Morris, Grottoes; a son, William R. Snell, Anchorage, Alaska; a brother, Robert E. Creger, Lisbon, Maine; two grandchildren, Elizabeth Smith, Michael Housler; two great-grandchildren, Sarah Housler, Jonathon Housler. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a son, Fred D. Snell and a daughter, Sharon Housler. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Monday at the Kyger Funeral Home in Harrisonburg. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memorial Gardens near Harrisonburg. The family will receive friends from 10 to 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society, 1920-H Medical Ave., Harrisonburg, Va. 22801. on January 4, 2004.2
