Born on November 29, 1925 in Carolina, WV, she was the daughter of Lawrence and Lula (Rogers) Paxton. She was a 1943 graduate of Monongah High School, worked at the company store in Carolina, and attended the cadet nurses school at St. Mary’s Hospital in Clarksburg. She married Jack Kelley on July 21, 1947. In 1956, they moved to a two-hundred acre farm on a hill near Nestorville, where they raised cattle, chickens, pigs, and large vegetable gardens. Doris called this experience “a great adventure.” She was a Nestorville Merrymakers 4-H Club leader and a vacation Bible school teacher, and later a special education teacher’s aide employed by the Barbour County Board of Education. She enjoyed reading, crocheting, walking in the woods on the farm, and playing games with her grandchildren. She was always ready to play Scrabble, and she attended the Nestorville United Methodist Church. Those who knew Doris were amazed by her strength and resolve as she cared for her husband through his battle with cancer and as she persevered throughout her widowhood. After 50 years of marriage, she was determined to move on by herself, making decisions to enjoy life, continue living on the family farm, garden, travel, give to charities, and share good times with her family. She was a kind and gentle soul, selfless and good-humored and adventurous, with an unrelenting will to help others, and these qualities sustained her through her illness. Doris is survived by three children: Jack (Andrea) Kelley, Jr., Janie (Jim) Woolfitt, and Larry (Sam) Kelley; six grandchildren: Daman Kelley, John Kelley, Will (Sara) Woolfitt, Emmy (Andrew) McDaniel, Harmony (Jacob Scheick) Grogan, and Daniel (Jenny) Kelley; and three great-grandsons: Ethan Woolfitt, Isaac Woolfitt, and Corbin Kelley; sister-in-law Ruth Ellen McCall; and numerous nieces and nephews. Doris was the last surviving member of her immediate family. She was preceded in death by two brothers, Dennis and Donald Paxton, and three sisters, Clarice Annan, Ruth Tetrick, and Helen O’Keefe. Interment will follow in the Rose Hill Cemetery. on October 4, 2019.4

Helen was born in Fairmont on Oct. 29, 1927, the youngest of six children of Lawrence Paxton of Carolina and Lulu Rogers Paxton of Valley Fork. Helen graduated from Monongah High where she was an enthusiastic student with many friends, and always a beautiful smile. Helen was a petite, dark-haired beauty with rich brown, twinkling eyes, who in her young days just might break out singing in a beautiful cheerful voice. After her marriage, Helen moved to Baltimore with her husband Linn Norman of Gilmer County, who had recently completed his tour of duty in the Air Force. Helen and Linn had two children, Louanna Lynne Newton of Palm Bay, Fla., and Lawrence Jay Norman of North Port, Fla. Helen adapted well to the big-city atmosphere in Baltimore. She practiced her typing until she was fast as lightning and taught herself traditional Gregg's shorthand, no easy task. She worked as a special assistant at Martin Marietta for a number of years, and for 20 years until her retirement, she worked as beneficiary specialist at Massachusetts Mutual Life Insurance Co. After her retirement Helen worked as a volunteer at a nearby senior center, and for a number of years as a dedicated and tireless volunteer at her church's soup kitchen for the homeless. Toward the last 10 years of her life, Helen suffered many illnesses stemming mostly from a genetic heart defect, but she never let these problems stop her. She had a strong yet caring, unique personality. She pushed on like a Viking, and worked hard to stay on with her beloved family. She was riding a stationary bike just weeks before her passing! Helen's surviving sister and her lifelong best friend is Doris Louise Kelly, who lives in Philippi with her family. In addition to her two children, Helen's family includes her devoted daughter-in-law, Patricia; Helen's grandchildren, Lisa and Rich Marvel, Timothy and Terri McMichael, Patrick and Gina McMichael, and Aaron and Michelle Norman; great-grandchildren, Mark, Katie, Allison, Renee and Kyrra McMichael, Owen and Erin Marvel, Christopher, Susan and Tony Norman, and John, Kirk and Craig Dorsch; and one great-great-grandson, Cammeron McMichael. And of course, Helen's loyal and beloved companion of many years, Tony the cat. The family would like to thank Holmes Regional Hospital at Melbourne, Fla., and especially Dr. Elmaghraby, and Chiles Hospice at Palm Bay, Fla., for the kind and loving care they showed to Helen during her illnesses. Heaven just became a much more interesting place! On May 20, 2012.3
