During World War ll, Ray was a Prisoner of War for 463 days on a dairy farm at Stalag B in Germany. He served as Grand Marshall of the Veterans Day Parade in 2003, the same year he finally received his Purple Heart after waiting 59 years. Ray was an avid sports fan. His favorites included NASCAR, WVU and LSU football and Princeton Devil Rays baseball. He attended Kellysville Church of God until declining health prevented his attendance. He was a life member of the DAV - Chapter No. 31 and the American Ex Prisoners of War. He was an associate member of the Vietnam Veterans of America No. 628. Born in Princeton October 13, 1914 he was the son of the late Charlie and June Scott Thorn. He retired from the City of Princeton in 1968 as Chief of Police. Joe was an avid sports fan. In his early years he played Minor League Baseball for the St. Louis Cardinals organization. He faithfully served his country in the United States Marine Corp. during World War II and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received at Iwo Jima. Following the war he returned to Princeton in 1945 and started his career with the Princeton Police Department. He worked his way through the ranks and was named Chief of Police in 1959 and remained there until his retirement in 1968. His love of sports and his desire to help children by encouraging athletic participation remained with him all of his adult life. He was one of the area founders of Little League Baseball and Basketball. As a police officer he often recommended sports to troubled youth for self-improvement. Joe was also a member of Concord Masonic Lodge, Princeton Elks Lodge, Fraternal Order of Police and the Concord He-Mans Assoc. In addition to his parents, three brothers, Carlyle Thorn, Charlie Thorn, and Marvin Thorn; and three sisters, Crystal Eads, Mabel "Dutch" White, and Edith Hypes preceded him in death. After 36 years of service, Robert retired from Appalachian Power Company. One of Robert's greatest loves was operating a bulldozer. He worked with his best friend, J.B. Buckland, clearing properties throughout Rich Creek and Giles County. In 2009, Robert and Betty retired to Roanoke, Va., residing at Pheasant Ridge Retirement Village. Robert was a member of Glen Lyn Church of Christ. Since moving to Roanoke, he attended Penn Forest Christian Church. He was a member of the Kazim Temple and the Giles County Kazim Misfits. Surviving are four sisters, Mrs. Luther Poage, Pilot; Mrs. Bitha Iddings and Miss Janie Wilson, Roanoke, and Mrs. Della Bent Mountain; and a brother, W. H. Wilson, Lynchburg. Interment will be in the Wilson cemetery. on February 18, 1959.⁵

     Janie Victoria Wilson was buried at Wilson Cemetery, Daniel's Run Road (Rt. 661), Locust Grove, Floyd Co., Virginia.⁴ Her Social Security Number was 269-05-3817.⁷ She was born on June 19, 1879 at Floyd Co., Virginia; Her death certificate, the SSDI, and delayed birth record has an incorrect birth year of 1880.^1,4,5,7 She died on October 15, 1968 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 89.^4,6 She Miss Janie Wilson died Tuesday at home of niece, Mrs. Virginia Davis, Roanoke. Surviving are two sisters, Mrs. Nettie Poague, Roanoke, Mrs. Dellar Hall, Copper Hill; brother, W. H. Wilson, Lynchburg. on October 16, 1968.⁶

     William Edgar Lewis Wilson was born on May 22, 1891 at Floyd Co., Virginia.^1,4

     Walter Herman Wilson was born on September 20, 1897 at Simpsons, Floyd Co., Virginia; His WWI draft card and the VA Military Affairs Records have a birth year of 1896.^3,4,5,7 He married Lucy Elizabeth Gusler on June 1, 1926 at Orange Co., Florida.^6,8

     Her Social Security Number was 226-70-5213.⁴ Luana June Craig was buried at Evergreen Burial Park, 1307 Summit Ave SW, Roanoke, Virginia.¹ She was born on October 7, 1946 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,2,4,3 As of October 3, 1975,her married name was Poff.² She married Joe Duard Poff, son of Duard Murphy Poff and Rachel Ellen Taylor, on October 3, 1975 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,2 Luana June Craig died on November 11, 2013 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 67.^1,4,3 She Luana June Craig Poff, 67, of Salem, passed away Monday, November 11, 2013. She was born in Roanoke on October 7, 1946, and was preceded in death by her parents, Edward and June Owen Craig. She retired from the City of Salem, Human Resources Department, with over 25 years of service. She is survived by her husband, Joe Poff; and their son and daughter-in-law, Jared and Christin Poff. She had two beautiful grandchildren, Scarlett June and Mitchell Grady Poff. She is also survived by her brothers, Dallas Craig and wife, Trish, David Craig and wife, Sharon, and Eddie Craig; and her sister, Nancy Jo Blevins. She was predeceased by her mother-in-law, Rachel Poff; and is survived by brothers-in-law, Don Poff and wife, Sharon, Terry Poff; and sister-in-law, Julie Duffy. Luana is also survived by special cousin, Sharon Miller and her husband, Jerry; very special friends, Dianne Maxey, and Carolyn and Terry Hall; several other cousins, nieces and nephews; and many of Jared's friends that she considered to be her children as well. Burial will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. on November 13, 2013.¹
