Mrs. Courtney is survived by her husband of 57 years, James Courtney; son, Jim Courtney and wife, Beth, and daughter, Susan Tucker, all of Charlotte; brother, William Nail Jr. of Asheville; sisters-in-law, Celia Nail and Helen Dempsey of Asheville; grandchildren, Traci and Kevin Tucker; stepgrandsons, Scott, Jordan, Parker, Travis and Connor Lopshire; great-granddaughter, Courtnie Bell; nieces, Linda and Michelle Bamford; and nephews, Paul Bamford and William M. Nail III. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel at Hickory Grove Baptist Church with the Rev. Henry Justice officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Carolina Funeral Service & Cremation Center, 5505 Monroe Road, Charlotte. The family has asked that memorials be made to Make A Wish Foundation, 121 W. Trade St., Suite 160, Charlotte, NC 28202. on April 8, 2005.1

He was a graduate of Sand Hill High School and Brevard College and attended the University of North Carolina. He received his wings and commission at Spence Field, Ga., in June 1943 and served with the 13th Army Air Corps during World War II. He was a member of the 67th Fighter Group and flew 101 combat missions in a P-38 and P-39 in the South Pacific and the P-40 in Hawaii. He was presented the Air Medal for meritorious achievement in combat flights over Japanese-held territory and was one of 24 officers and men of his squadron to be decorated for gallantry in action. He retired as commanding officer of the Asheville Air Force Reserve Squadron. He retired from Tidewater Supply Co. and was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. Surviving are his wife, Helen Teague Holcombe; son, George Holcombe and his wife, Brenda, of Maynardville; three stepgrandchildren, Christopher, Michael and Cathy Marsh; and one brother, the Rev. T. Dale Holcombe of Mooresville, N.C. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Carpenter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Pallbearers will be Bill Russell, David Holcombe, Ron Grover, Les Sharpe, Jim Trull, Dick Davis, Frosty Fincher and David Brooks. His family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at Groce Funeral Home on Patton Avenue in Asheville and request that memorials be made to the Alzheimers Association (please designate your check for research), 31 College Place, Suite D320, Asheville, NC 28801-2644. He was born Feb. 7, 1924, in Candler, to the late Theron A. and Mary Ethel Marlow Holcombe. He served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. Rev. Holcombe was a retired United Methodist minister, who served the Lord with nine appointments that included 15 churches throughout his ministry career. He was a member of Campbell Masonic Lodge #374 in Troutman. He had many different hobbies, including drafting, carpentry, woodworking and enjoyed boating and fishing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Richard B. Holcombe. He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Louise Sherrill Holcombe; daughters, Mary Rebecca Holcombe and Nancy Miller and husband, Gary; grandchildren, Jennifer Kohr and husband, Andrew and Erin Franklin and husband, Kevin; great-grandson, Caleb Franklin;and nephew, George Holcombe. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today (Sunday, April 7), at Rocky Mount United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Jamie Hamrick officiating. Burial will follow the service in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church. A native of Whittier, NC, she was a daughter of the late Charles W. and Martha Reed Teague. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Lt. Col. Richard B. Holcombe, USAF, Ret., who died in 2005. Mrs. Holcombe worked at Ivey's Department Store and John Carroll Specialty Store and she was a member of Francis Asbury United Methodist Church. She loved the mountains, especially appreciating wildflowers and hiking, and enjoyed working her flower garden. Mrs. Holcombe is survived by her son, George Holcombe and wife Brenda, of Maynardville; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Michael, and Cathy Marsh. A funeral service will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday at Francis Asbury United Methodist Church with the Rev. Fred Carpenter officiating.
