C., passed away on Sunday, June 7, 2009, following a brief, but valiant battle with brain cancer. Born in Roanoke, Va. on January 10, 1929, Jean was the daughter of Charles W. and Sarah Blanche Montgomery. When her husband was transferred to Charlotte in 1961, Jean and their three children joined him, and the family has remained in this area since that time. Jean began a long career in hotel/motel management in the 1960's. She managed properties for Ramada Inns and Holiday Inns, and in the nineties, she co-managed The Winds Resort in Ocean Isle Beach, N.C. During those years, she and her husband resided at Sunset Beach, N.C. and enjoyed their times with family visits on the shore. Jean always loved the beach and was never seen without a fully toned tan, and a flawless sense of fashion and style. Just a few months before her 80th birthday, she was a model in a Belk, Inc. display of autumn classics. For the last ten years of her life, Jean worked in the office of Belk Mooresville, where she developed her usual array of long lasting friendships with co-workers. Jean's family was the focus of her life. A devoted mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, and great-grandmother, she always placed the needs of her family before her own. Even in times of her recent illness, she strived to ensure that her children and grandchildren were well take care of. She was also an avid, life-long bowler, and has participated in league bowling since 1958. Jean's recent years, though wrought with tragedy, were still precious to her and to her family. Nineteen months ago, her oldest child, Michael, passed away due to complications following a stroke. On November 22, 2008, Hayden Young, her beloved husband of 56 years, lost his battle with lung cancer. Eight weeks later, her mother-in-law, Edith Collins Young, succumbed to the natural aging process at 98. Within two months, she learned that a brain tumor was sapping her strength. Despite aggressive treatment, she was unable to recover. This magnificent woman will be sorely missed by her many adoring friends and family. Jean is survived by her daughter, Patricia Young Claiborne; her son, Donald N. Young; son-in-law, Paul Claiborne; daughters-in-law, Cathy Gwaltney and Kathy Rollins; sister, Hazel M. Johnson; grandchildren, Kimberly Connell, Michael Gwaltney, Jr., Keri L. Stocks, Leslie K. Netta, Alex Claiborne, Joshua Young and Jordon Young; and great-grandchildren, Kristin Lawson, Andrew Lawson, Ethan Gwaltney, Evan Gwaltney, Samuel Netta, and arriving later in June, Abby Netta. Burial will follow in Glenwood Memorial Park. Jean's family would like to express their sincere appreciation to Melody Worsham, with Hospice & Palliative Care, Darla Corah, with Home Instead, and Kimberly Rippy and Dr. Warden Woodard with Carolinas Hematology and Oncology, for their steadfast, attention care of Mrs. Young. on June 8, 2009.2

The joint burial will follow in the Henry Memorial Park on August 20, 2002.7 She CRIME CAREFULLY ORCHESTRATED - HENRY COUNTY SHERIFF SAID KILLERS EITHER PLANNED CAREFULLY OR KNEW FAMILY WELL
The slaying of a Henry County couple and abduction of their 9-year-old daughter was either a carefully orchestrated crime or the killer or killers knew the family so well it would have been easy to pull it off, Henry County Sheriff Frank Cassell said Monday. Meanwhile, family and friends of the slain couple, Michael and Mary Short, are frustrated by the lack of evidence pointing to the whereabouts of the Shorts' missing daughter, Jennifer. The friends have created an account to raise reward money to help find the girl who was taken from her bed five days ago. "Maybe somebody knows something and this will help," said Sheila Davis of Boones Mill, a family friend who started the drive. Cassell said investigators are still getting tips from the barrage of phone calls, and authorities have chased leads into at least five different states. But all of them have been dead-ends and police have no obvious direction on where to take the investigation. The Shorts were found shot to death Thursday morning when a man who worked with Michael Short went to their house to pick him up. Soon after police arrived, they realized Jennifer was missing. One thing that has stymied police is they haven't decided why the Shorts were killed or why their daughter was abducted. It's unclear if the primary motive was killing the couple, which led to the abduction, or if it was a planned abduction that led to the killings, Cassell said. "This is a very unusual, bizarre case," Cassell said to a swarm of local and national media at one of two press conferences Monday. Court documents obtained Monday in Henry County Circuit Court suggest that Mary Short, 36, and Michael Short, 50, were shot once each at very close range with a .22-caliber gun. A single .22-caliber casing was found in Mary Short's bed. Another .22-caliber casing was found on the floor of the enclosed carport where her husband was killed while he slept. Gunshot residue was taken from both bodies, indicating they were shot at close range. But the evidence taken from the home seems to be all the police have to go on. Cassell said investigators were initially surprised that there was so little obvious crime-related evidence in the Shorts' home. He declined to comment on any of the evidence police took from the house. Some 15 mounted officers from the Rockingham County (N.C.) Sheriff's Office searched the area around the Shorts' home but quit after no clues were found. A pond behind the house was dragged for possible evidence, but none was found there either, Cassell said. Up to 30 sworn officers from eight law enforcement agencies are on the case at any given time, Cassell said. Much of the time has been spent interviewing family and friends of the couple as well as business acquaintances of Michael Short, who ran a mobile home-moving business. Cassell said Michael Short had many more part-time and casual workers than they first realized. Nobody is being ruled out as a possible suspect, Cassell said. Cassell said police have pretty much eliminated robbery as a motive, because more than $600 was found in the house, either in wallets or a bank bag. While most of the items on the list of things officers took from the house were common objects such as photos of Jennifer, key rings and a receipt from a Wal-Mart trip on the last night the Shorts were seen alive, other items listed on the search warrant raise questions. Included on the list: The phrase was "Im (sic) glad to see," was written on a windowpane in the carport where Michael Short was found. It was unclear if it had any connection to the crime. A 12-gauge shotgun, a .22-caliber rifle and ammunition for each were recovered from the house. It was unclear from the court documents where they were found. Police would not comment on who the guns belonged to or if they were used in the killings. A number of records relating to Michael Short's mobile home-moving business. Multiple rolls of undeveloped film from the office area of the house. All the waiting and lack of news of Jennifer's safety led Sheila Davis to do something Monday. Davis said she's known Michael Short and his family for years. "You see this on the TV with people you don't even know and you pray for them and then it happens to you and you can't even believe it," she said. Davis opened an account at a local bank for donations that could help in the investigation. She said the money can be used as a reward for information or to hire detectives or whatever is needed. She just wants to see Jennifer safe at home again. "Your family loves you [Jennifer] and wants you home," she said. Funeral services for Michael and Mary Short will be Thursday at 2 p.m. at the Martinsville Church of God. Donations for the reward fund can be sent to: Jennifer Renee Short Family Fund, c / o First National Bank, PO Box 207, Boones Mill VA 24065. Zeke Barlow can be reached at 761-9990 or zekeb@roanoke.com. CRIME SCENE EVIDENCE The Henry County Sheriff's Office listed 64 items seized from the the home of Michael and Mary Short which are or could be could be evidence relating to their killings and the disappearance of their daughter Jennifer, 9. Here are some of the items: - .22 caliber bullet casing from Mary Shot's bed - .22 caliber bullet casing from the floor of the enclosed carport where Michael Short was shot - Gunshot residues from the bodies of Michael and Mary Short - A finger-traced impression on glass that read "Im glad to see" - Bedclothes and pillows from both Mary Short's and Jennifer Short's beds. - A flashlight from Jennifer Short's bed. - Marlin model No. 60 .22 rifle and ammunition - Winchester 12-gauge shotgun and ammunition - Telephone wires from the south end of the home's phone box.      Jennifer Renee Short was buried at Henry Memorial Park, 8443 Virginia Avenue, Oak Level, Henry Co., Virginia.7 She was born on July 12, 1993 at Franklin Co., Virginia.7,3,4 She died on August 15, 2002 at Wentworth, Rockingham Co., North Carolina, at age 9.7,3 She MOURNERS GATHER TO REMEMBER 9 YEARS OF LIFE - FAMILY, FRIENDS AND A COMMUNITY SAY GOODBYE TO JENNIFER SHORT
When Jennifer Renee Short was 5 years old, her father's uncle, Frank Arrington, promised her a fishing trip. He held out his hands to show her the size of the fish they'd catch, and her eyes lit up. Every time they spoke afterward, Jennifer would ask him, "Uncle Frank, when are we going fishing?" But Jennifer and her granduncle never took that trip. Arrington told that story to national media eight weeks ago as he pleaded for his missing niece's safe return. He told it again, his voice halting, as Jennifer's family made preparations for her funeral. Saturday afternoon, more than 250 people came to Martinsville Church of God to say goodbye to a 9-year-old girl whose death has become a national tragedy. A national search for Jennifer began Aug. 15, when her parents, Michael and Mary Short, were found shot to death. That search ended in sorrow Oct. 4, when a DNA test confirmed that Jennifer's body had been found in North Carolina. Pictures on a poster board outside the sanctuary showed aspects of Jennifer's life that a public riveted by the story of her disappearance has never seen: Jennifer grinning up at the camera, wearing a new pair of in-line skates. Jennifer sticking her tongue out as she climbs into the back seat of a car. Jennifer dressed in her baseball uniform, holding a bat as if ready to swing. Jennifer standing with a rainbow behind her that appears to lightly touch her head. The funeral service concluded with a video that began with pictures of Jennifer as a baby asleep in her crib. It ended with footage of her relatives gathered in North Carolina at a bridge, now covered with flowers and teddy bears, next to where Jennifer's remains were discovered. Three ministers officiated at the service. As dozens of the Shorts' relatives sobbed quietly, Pastor Jackie Poe assured them that in God's arms, Jennifer's life will never end. The community in Henry County has been torn apart in the past year, by layoffs, by unemployment, by corruption in the county government, said the Rev. Morris Fleischer. But, like the tragedy of Sept. 11 that united the citizens of New York, the deaths of Jennifer and her parents brought the people in Henry County together, he said. He compared the killings of the Short family to a terrorist attack. The Rev. Kevin English echoed Fleischer's words, calling the killings an "act of terrible evil." He addressed Henry County Sheriff Frank Cassell and the police officers from the counties of Franklin, Henry and Rockingham, N.C., who came to serve as honorary pallbearers. He prayed for God to grant them both peace and wisdom as they continue their hunt for a suspect in the slayings. Teddy bears and dolls were lined up beneath and to either side of the closed casket. One bear held a note that read, "Sweetheart - we'll miss you." As the funeral procession rolled slowly down Liberty Road, a young boy alongside the road held up a sign that read "Jennifer Always." "Deep down everybody was hoping against hope that she was alive," said Betty Martin, a Martinsville resident who came to show her support for the Short family. She was waiting for the burial ceremony to begin at Henry Memorial Park in Bassett Forks. "This whole thing just shouldn't have happened. "It is like a terrorist thing in our community," she said. "Things like that normally happen in big cities, but this was here." She agreed with the Rev. Fleischer that the Shorts' tragedy has drawn the community together. "It is a very Christian community, but with a country flavor, so you know how it is - if you don't know them you know somebody that did." The Shorts' relatives chose for Jennifer to be laid to rest next to her mother. At the graveside ceremony, a bird handler released six white doves: three for Michael, Mary and Jennifer Short; three for the Holy Trinity. After the ceremony, Jim Whitehead, one of Jennifer's uncles, talked of how angry and frustrated he's become since the killings. He spoke of how he wants the nation not to forget Jennifer and her parents, and how he wants tougher laws against crime so that what happened to Jennifer won't ever happen again. And he talked about the doves. As he watched the birds circle together, he said, he knew that Jennifer's spirit, and her mother's and father's, were with them as they disappeared into the sky. on October 13, 2002.8
