Mr. Martin had a long career in the coal industry having retired from United Poca Fuel Company at Crumpler and Algoma with more than 44 years of service. He was a member of the U.M.W.A. and the V.F.W. He was a member of Stinson United Methodist Church in Princeton. Mr. Martin was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother, he loved baseball, doing carpentry and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Elizabeth "Betty" Moore Martin, Step mother, Thelma Virginia Martin, along with siblings; Evelyn Myrtle, Lois, Marguerite Ruth, William and Virginia Katherine Martin, and two step brothers, Thurman Gene & Teddy. He will be lovingly remembered by his children, Suzanne Phillips & husband Fred of Roanoke VA, Casey Martin of Princeton, Marlene Martin of Peterstown; Grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Martin Cordes & husband Nikolaus of Tuscaloosa AL, Robert Eric Martin of Peterstown, Fred A. Phillips Jr. & family of Roanoke VA, Bryan L. Phillips of Vancleave MS; Siblings, Mary Frances Surber and Glenna Lake Womack, and a host of nieces and nephews; And his extended family, at Princeton Community Hospital, Princeton Health Care Center, Hospice Compassus, Dr. Gordon Prescott and his staff, his special caregivers, Sandi Lawrence, Janet Harvey and Monica Lane and the members of Stinson United Methodist Church and Fairview Christian Community Church. She was one of seven children born to the late Walter N. Martin and Zada (Thornton) Martin of Mercer County, WV. After growing up in Vivian, West Virginia, she joined the US Marine Corps in 1942, serving until 1944 and reaching the rank of Corporal. Following her military service she was educated at Presbyterian College. She served as a Child Welfare worker in Florida. Survivors include her husband of 67 years, the Reverend Dr. Philip W. Dunford of Forest City; a brother, Robert Martin, Princeton, WV; two sisters, Mary Surber, Bristol, TN, and Glenna Womick, Forest City. She was the mother of a daughter Kate Dunford of Raleigh, NC; three sons, The Rev Skip Dunford of Elizabethtown, KY, Timothy Dunford of Mandeville, LA. She also loved her six grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by a son, Daniel Dunford. A devoted spouse and mother, and doting "MeeMaw", Ginny was also an avid outdoors-person, enjoying camping, hiking and fishing. She was a world traveler. Her strong faith and devotion to her Lord Jesus led her to active service in the Presbyterian Church (USA). She served at various times and places as a Teacher and choir member, and was an ordained Elder and occasional preacher. She was an active participant in Women of the Church, receiving the Lifetime Woman of the Church Award. She was also honored with the status of Elder Emeritus by First Presbyterian Church, Forest City. An outstanding contributor to the life of her community, she dedicated her life to serving those in need. She helped found the Forest City Christmas Cheer Center where she served as Director for 8 years. She volunteered at Yokefellow, delivered Meals on Wheels, and assisted at Isothermal Community College Library. In recognition of her community service she received the NC Governor's Award; the Forest City Kiwanis Citizen of the Year Award; and the prestigious international Others Award from The Salvation Army. on April 3, 2011.5

Glenna Lake Martin was buried at Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church Cemetery, 250 Hudlow Road, Forest City, Rutherford Co., North Carolina.4,5 She Mrs. Glenna Martin Womick, age 87 of Owens Street, Forest City, died Monday, May 5, 2014 at her home. Born in West Virginia, she was a daughter of the late Walter N. Martin and Zada Thornton Martin and was the widow of the late Robert Quinn "Bob" Womick, Sr. She was a bookkeeper for many businesses through the years, and last worked in the Isothermal Community College Library. Mrs. Womick was a member of Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church where she was Past-President of the United Methodist Women, was active in the Women's Circle, a founding member and an integral part of the church bizarre committee, and she also served on various other church committees. She was also involved with Meals On Wheels, a very active volunteer with Yokefellow, and also served as a Cub Scout Den Mother. Survivors include her son, Robert Womick, Jr. and wife Carol of Forest City; daughters, Sharon Graham and husband Mickey of Ellenboro, Sandra Dale and husband Tom of Bermuda, Toni Gamble and husband John of Cary, NC; grandchildren, John Gamble, Jr., Lisa Gamble, Skip Steffey, Rich Steffey, Ryan Steffey, Chip Graham, Tracy Miller, Lori Carpenter, and Quinn Womick; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Frances Cobb of Forest City, and brothers-in-law, Grady Womick and Phil Dunford, both of Forest City. She was preceded in death by a grandson, Matthew Lail, brothers and sisters, Mary Suber, Robert Martin, Margaret Norman, Bill Martin, Virginia Dunford, Lois Martin, and Evelyn Martin. Funeral services will be held in the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church. Elizabeth Warden "Betty" Moore Mrs. Elizabeth W. "Betty" Martin, 85, a loving wife, mother, nanny, departed this life peacefully Saturday evening, February 18, 2006 with her caring husband by her side at the Princeton community Hospital. Born September 26, 1920, at Hellier, Kentucky, she was the daughter of the late Columbus E. and Lillie Frye Moore. Betty graduate from Northfork High School. She was a former employee for the G.C. Murphy Company, Clark Hardware of Northfork and Gianatos at Kimball. Mrs. Martin was a resident of Northfork until 1980, moving with her husband to Princeton. She was a member of the Stinson United Methodist church on Oakvale Road in Princeton, a member of the United Methodist Women and the church choir. She also was a member of the Weatherford Fellowship of the Kee Street United Methodist church in Princeton. Betty was devoted to her family, church and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers, Charles E. Moore, Kenneth E. Moore and Heber E. Moore along with sisters; Ruth Prentice, Quilla Grunwald and Esther Phillips. Survivors Her devoted husband of 63 years, Robert K. Martin; two children, Suzanne M. Phillips and husband Fred of Roanoke, Virginia; Casey Martin of Princeton; daughter in law, Marlene Gammon and husband Burke of Peterstown; two grandchildren, Jessica Lynn Martin of Princeton, Eric Martin of Peterstown; step grandchildren, Fred A. Phillips of Roseville, California; Bryan L. Phillips of Biloxi, Miss; special caregiver Monica Lane of Princeton; a host of nephews and nieces. Graveside services will be conducted at the Roselawn Memorial Gardens on the courthouse Road in Princeton. Hatcher, of Shawsville; brothers, Donnie Hatcher, of Shawsville, Dennis Hatcher and wife, Lisa, of Shawsville, and Raymond Hatcher and Donna, of Christiansburg; sister, Linda Mize and husband, Keith, of Salem; stepfather, Thomas Karr, of Salem; special friends, Bob Ratcliff and Kelly Walters; and many, many other friends. We want to offer a special thanks to all who prayed for and visited him. Also his care giver, Dr. McCoy, who was a blessing to the family, and to the nursing staff at Montgomery Regional Hospital. We will forever miss his smile and humor. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, April 7, 2009, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Horne Funeral Home.
