He was 82 years old. He is survived by his wife 61 years, Vergie Mae Reed Weeks; their son, Michael Allen Weeks and his wife, Janet; and one grandson, Matthew Braden Weeks, and his wife, Karen; his two sisters, Ilene Belcher and Hava Epperly, and their husbands, Warren and Ben; and his brother, Posey Weeks and wife, Frances, also survive him. He is also survived by his sisters-in-law, Ruby and Althea Weeks. He was predeceased by his brothers, Clarence and George Weeks. He is also survived by one brother-in-law, Jesse Reed. James was born February 29, 1920, in Floyd County, Va., to George William and Mary Jane Gathercole Weeks. Growing up during the Great Depression, he was unable to complete a formal education, working instead with his father at a saw mill. At the age of 45, pushed by his love of knowledge, James achieved his G.E.D., an accomplishment that brought him great pride. During World War II, he worked for Carrier Corporation for four years constructing defense facilities. He was drafted into the U.S. Navy in 1944, where he served in the Pacific Theater in Manila until his honorable discharge in 1946. After the war, James moved back with his wife to Floyd County to begin a family. His first job was building the house his family would live in for the next twenty years. This was quite an amazing feat, considering James had no formal training in the skills of construction, plumbing or electricity. The house still stands and is currently occupied. He took his natural gifts and worked in a variety of construction related jobs, and for a period of time, went into business at a plumbing supply store with his brother, Clarence. In 1957, James went to work for Lanford Brothers Construction as Project Superintendent. He supervised the construction of numerous bridges throughout Virginia and West Virginia. In his time at Lanford Brothers, James played an instrumental role in making the company one of the largest and most successful in the state. He was with the company for 28 years until his retirement in 1985. However, retirement did not slow him down. One could often find him in his workshop crafting anything from China cabinets to marbled oak bowls, to the rocking horse he made for his grandson. James was always creating and cementing his legacy in the items he built. James will always be remembered for his open heart and his love for his family and those around him. He was known to help out neighbors and friends and was always a person one could rely on to give support and lend a helping hand. To remember James , is to remember a man who personified strength through his quiet, gentle and loving nature. A man who was a devoted husband, proud father, playful grandfather, and true friend. A man who found the simple pleasures in life, whether it be building a desk or playing with his beloved Welsh Corgie, Nipper. Emily Dickinson once said, "To live is so startling, it leaves little time for anything else." James Weeks was a man who saw the beauty that life has to offer and spent every day making the most of the time he had. James was a lifetime member of The Church of Brethren and has been a member of the Williamson Road Church for the past 34 years. He was also a member of the American Legion. A graveside service will be held at Beaver Creek Church of the Brethren Cemetery in Floyd County. on March 5, 2002.³

Carol was a member of Brookhill Wesleyan Church where she attended faithfully. She loved knitting, reading, swinging, and working in her garden. Carol loved her family and taking care of all her grandchildren. She will be missed by all who knew her. She is survived by her husband, George W. She is preceded in death by her parents, Jesse Michael and Manda Ellen Reed; her husband, James Clinton Reed (typo - should be Weeks), whom she married on June 26, 1940; and her brother, Jesse Arthur Reed. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Michael Allen and Janet Shaver Weeks, of Danville, Va; grandson and wife, Matthew Braden and Karen Davis Weeks, of Sunnyside, N.Y; and special friends, Linda Gatson and Diane Anderson. Vergie had a deep desire to pursue education and obtain a college education, a goal not easily achieved by many women of her generation. After she graduated from Floyd High School in 1938, she moved away from home to attend Bluefield Business College with the eventual goal of becoming a successful businesswoman. Love found a way to change that goal, however, as she married James in 1940. Together, they traveled to New York, Oklahoma, Louisiana, and Alabama while James worked for the Carrier Corporation building defense facilities before and during World War II. In Alabama, Vergie found the time to complete her business studies. After James was drafted into the Navy, she joined him in California where she worked at Sears in Long Beach and later Capwell's Department Store in Oakland. After the war, the couple returned to Floyd where they built a home on property gifted to them by Vergie's father and her wish for a blond headed boy was granted. Vergie began her long career in education as secretary to the Superintendent of Floyd County Schools in the late 1950s. She and Jim moved to Roanoke in 1967, where she worked briefly for Roanoke County Schools before transferring to the Roanoke City Schools where she retired as an Executive Secretary in 1985. During that time, she attended night classes at Virginia Western Community College, graduating Summa Cum Laude in 1978 and being certified by the State Department of Education as an Educational Secretary. She always had an interest in trying new things, especially technology, whether it be learning how to cook on the first commercial microwave or becoming proficient in computer technology and the internet. In retirement, she used these computer skills to volunteer to prepare taxes for those not able to do so. She taught herself to play bridge and was a member of several bridge clubs in the Roanoke Area. She was a lifelong member of the Church of the Brethren, first at Beaver Creek in Floyd and then Williamson Road Church in Roanoke. Vergie loved animals, especially her Corgis, Tina, Bosco, Nipper, and Joy, with whom she shared her life. Interment to follow at Beaver Creek Cemetery. on August 18, 2011.²
