Byrne Jr., 79, of Temple, Texas passed away peacefully at his home after a long courageous battle with cancer. His wife Dorothy, of 42 years, was by his side. Mr. Byrne was born April 7, 1918 in Tilden, Texas the son of C.E. and Jennie Martin Byrne. He enlisted in the service in 1942 and flew 35 missions over Germany with the 8th Air Force. He was in the first class of noncolleagiate graduates of pilot training school in Douglas, Arizona. He remained in Germany during the occupation and met Dorothy Jacobs, his future bride. He also flew the early stages of the Berlin Airlift. He helped implement the early radar system for Europe started in Falbrook, Germany. He retired as a Lt. Col. in 1978. He received the Air Service Medal with five Oakleaf Clusters, and the Distinguished Flying Cross. He graduated from Texas A & I in Kingsville, Texas with a B.S. degree in petroleum engineering in 1955. He married Dorothy May Jacobs on June 11, 1955. He started as a field engineer with standard oil of Indiana (Amoco). He worked as a petroleum engineer for Amoco Oil throughout west Texas during the oil boom days. He transfered to Amoco Oil International in Cairo, Egypt in 1976. He retired from Amoco Oil International as a Sr. Staff Engineer in 1984. Mr. Byrne was an active member of the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple. He started with the Lutheran Laymens League in the mid 1960's establishing local chapters and promoting the Lutheran Hour and the Lutheran Hour Ministries. He held many offices at the local and state level and in May of 1988 he was elected president of the Texas District LLL serving four years (two terms). He was treasurer of Central Texas Area Museum until his death. He was active in Boy Scouting serving as Pack Leader and Troop Leader in Andrews, Texas and Cairo, Egypt. He was an active leader of organized activities of community youth in Cairo. He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Byrne of Temple, Texas; two sons, Rob and Sherry Byrne of Houston and Thomas Byrne of Houston, Texas; three daughters, Patti Mitchell of Austin, Texas, Terri and Barry Bielefeldt of Dallas, Texas and Jenni Byrne of Temple, Texas. He is also survived by four sisters, Mrs. Helen Beard of San Marcos, Texas, Martha Harris of Hot Springs, Arkansas, Corrine Black of Pleasanton, Texas, Virginia Richter of Alice, Texas; and by one brother, Donald Byrne of Tilden, Texas. He is also survived by seven grandchildren, Amanda Mitchell, Holly Mitchell, Amber Mitchell, Matthew Mitchell, Lucas Mitchell, Brent Bielefeldt and Nathaniel Byrne. A family visitation will be held from 5:30 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Scanio-Harper Funeral Home, 3110 Airport Road Temple, Texas. Funeral services for Mr. Charles E. Byrne Jr. will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Temple, Texas with The Reverend Alan Struckmeyer and Reverend Brian Bibler officiating. Burial with full military honors will be at Bellwood Memorial Park in Temple, Texas. on December 9, 1997.7

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Effie Huffman; parents, David and Letha Huffman; and sister, Mildred Holcome. Surviving to cherish his memory are his wife of 7½ years, JoAnn Huffman; children, Betty Mull and husband Bud, Barbara Tucker and husband Jim, Laura Cross and husband Ben, Steve Radford and wife Kathy; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren. He was a native of Roanoke and a veteran of the Navy, serving in World War II. He was employed by Norfolk and Western Railroad and was a United States Postal Carrier. He was a faithful, active member of First Church of the Nazarene, involved in various areas of church service. He was active in the VFW Post 4522 and the U.S. Postal Union. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, January 18, 2016, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem, Va. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park, Salem. The family will receive friends from 4 to 6 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 2016, at Lotz Funeral Home in Salem. on January 16, 2016.2
