     Charles Robinson Carper Charles Robinson Carper, 79, died from complications of Alzheimer’s, on Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at Carilion Hospital in Roanoke, VA. Gus is survived by his wife of 12 years, Hazel Stevenson Carper; daughter, Sharon Ford, and her husband, Glenn Ford; two granddaughters, Brandi and Brook of Buchanan; step-daughter, Karen Jackson; and step-grandson, Alan Benson. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Braime Carper, Jr. and his wife, Doris; and his niece, Karen. He graduated from Jefferson High School and did a post grad year at Hargrave, where he was a quarterback. He joined the Navy Reserve and retired as Chief Petty Officer with 32 years of service. He became Athletic Director at YMCA and worked in Kentucky. Gus was made Kentucky Colonel by the Governor of Kentucky. He returned to the YMCA and retired from there after many years of service. As a youngster, Gus found a book about Judo and practiced what he learned from it on the neighbor kids. He taught at the YMCA and later formed his own club. He traveled all over the United States teaching and was honored to be able to teach at the Air Force Academy and the Olympic Training Center. He was well known and taught in many seminars. Gus received the rank of 7th degree black belt. Interment will follow at Sherwood Memorial Park.3 He was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.3 He was born on October 26, 1935 at Roanoke, Virginia.1,2 He married Freda Violet Smith, daughter of Samuel Elery "Sam" Smith and Rushie Violet Wilson, on June 18, 1978 at Roanoke Co., Virginia.1 Charles Robinson Carper died on April 1, 2015 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 79.3

"Dean" Johnson was buried at Brown Cemetery (also known as Twin Chapel Cemetery), West Manchester, Preble Co., Ohio.4 He was born on September 5, 1923 at Bent Mountain, Roanoke Co., Virginia.3,4 He died on July 31, 2001 at Columbus, Franklin Co., Ohio, at age 77.3,4 He JOHNSON, John L., died of a heart attack July 31 in Columbus, Ohio, at the age of 77. Born Sept. 5, 1923, at Bent Mountain, near Roanoke, Virginia, he was the fifth son of John Cole Johnson and Cammie (Hale) Johnson. Known there as Dean, he was the grandson of Will Hale & Viomy (Connor) Hale of Bent Mountain and Daniel & Nannie (Kingery) Johnson of Airpoint. While attending Bent Mountain School he won the Eastern U.S. marble championship and later was runner-up in the national marble contest. In 1941 he and his family moved to West Florence and then to West Manchester of Preble County, Ohio. John worked together with his brothers as a window washer. After some years he made Columbus his home and spent his remaining years there. Late in his life he attended Walnut Heights Baptist Church. Preceding him in death are brothers Darrell , Marshall, Charles, Frank, and a niece Peggy Johnson. Surviving family are brother Delmus and sister Mary Condon of West Manchester, brother Robert of Clarksville, Tennessee, and seventeen nieces and nephews. A soft-spoken, gentle man, kind and generous, he was loved by all who knew him, especially children. Graveside memorial services will be held August 11, at 2 p.m. at Twin Creek Chapel Cemetery, West Manchester. Donations in his memory may be made to Walnut Heights Baptist Church, 1660 Lattimer Dr., Columbus, Ohio 43227. on August 11, 2001.3
