LUCIE, Fla — Norman Smith, 68, a former Parsons resident, died at 9 a.m. Friday, Sept 15, 1989, in the emergency room of the HCA Medical Center at Port St Lucie, Fla. He had been in his usual health and death was unexpected. He was born at Clarksville, Ark. on May 22, 1921 to John and Ida (Holcomb) Smith. He was married to Fern Amos on Aug 17, 1941, at McCune. She survives of the home in Florida. Mr. Smith was employed with the safety department of the federal government for 40 years and retired in 1981 as a safety director. He had lived for many years at Erie and later at Parsons for 11 years. He also lived in El Paso, Texas for a few years. They lived in South Dakota where he worked with the Black Hills Army Department until moving to Mechanicsburg, Pa. where they lived for 23 years. In 1987 they moved to Florida where they have lived since then. He was a member of Parsons Lodge No 117 AF & AM and the American Legion at Port St. Lucie, Fla. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. Other survivors include: three sons, Norman and Rodney, both of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Paul of Pompano Beach, Fla; a daughter, Marilyn Albrecht of Bellefontaine, Ohio; and four grandchildren. He was preceded in death by an infant son and a granddaughter. The service will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Picrce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Erie with the Rev. Fred Jordan officiating. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery south of Erie. on September 16, 1989.⁴

     Donald Dean Harris Donald Dean Harris, 82, of Parsons, died at 3:30 p.m., Sunday, July 26, 2020 at his home. Death followed a brief period of failing health. He was born January 8, 1938, in rural McCune, to John E. and Ruby (Amos) Harris. The family lived in rural McCune through his early years and moved to Erie during his late high school years. He graduated from Erie High School in 1955. In November of 1955 he enlisted in the United States Air Force, and continued for 20 years with duty stations in Topeka, Guam, Maine and finally at the Walter Reed Medical Center in Washington, D.C., where he was with the Armed Forces Institute of Pathology as a medical technician. Early in his Air Force career he had received training through Washburn University in Topeka for his medical technician work. On October 20, 1956 he and Elaine Ferguson, also an Erie native, were married in Erie. She and their three daughters were with Dean on his various assignments and when he retired from the Air Force in 1975 they settled in Parsons. Dean was employed as a medical technician at the Katy Hospital until it’s closure. Then he worked at the Parsons Clinic for 14 years until his retirement. He had many interests and especially enjoyed a life of simplicity, often recalling the days of his early life on the farm. He loved being outdoors and spending time at his home. He developed a close bond with the Amish and often helped members of that community. He had a passion for gas engines and was active in the SEK Old Time Gas Engines organization. Dean was a craftsman and woodworker. He had made grandmother clocks for his three daughters and for many other family members. His most recent project was the restoration of a grandfather clock. Dean was active in the P.A.L.S. organization and spent many hours as a volunteer at the shelter for animals. He helped maintain the grounds at the First Christian Church of Parsons, where he was a member. For many years he and Elaine were active members of the former Beantown Ramblers Camping Club. Survivors are his wife, Elaine, of the home; three daughters, Linda Hughes (Terry) of Wichita, Deanna Basgall (Paul) and Debra Jordan (Dr. Kerry) both of Olathe; 10 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; brothers, John Harris (Joan) of Chetopa, David Harris (Jeanette) and Charles Harris (Carol) both of Erie and Jerry Harris (Marsha) of Victorville, CA; two sisters Coleen Yockey (Ronnie) of Scranton, PA and Patsy Richey (Steve) of Erie. His parents preceded him in death. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m., Saturday, at the First Christian Church in Parsons, with Rev. Jennifer Dawson officiating.      Luther A. Zimmerman was born on July 12, 1922 at McCune, Crawford Co., Kansas.^4,5 He married Dorothy J. McGown on June 19, 1949 at McCune, Crawford Co., Kansas.^5,2,4 Luther A. Zimmerman died on December 12, 2014 at Girard, Crawford Co., Kansas, at age 92.^4,5 He Luther A. Zimmerman, 92, of rural McCune passed away at 2:55 a.m., Friday, December 12, 2014 in the Girard Medical Center, Girard, Kansas. Luther was born July 12, 1922 in rural McCune, Kansas a son of Samuel and Emma (Amos) Zimmerman. He grew up in the McCune area and attended McCune Schools, graduating from McCune High School. After graduation Luther entered the U.S. Army in December of 1944. Luther served his country in the European Theater and Pacific Theater during World War II and was awarded several accommodations. On June 19, 1949, Luther was united in marriage to Dorothy McGown in the United Chapel Church in rural McCune; she preceded him in death on March 17, 2008. Luther devoted his life to his family, farming and more especially to serving the Lord. Luther was a member of the United Chapel Church and served as church treasure, Sunday school teacher and served on the Church Board. Luther is survived by his son, Steve Zimmerman and his wife Ruth, of rural McCune; three daughters, Jeanne Dent and her husband Henry, of Carrollton, Georgia; Susan Cheney and her husband Nick, of Girard, Kansas; Betty Anne Hall and her husband Mike, of Springfield, Missouri; one brother, Samual Ray Zimmerman, of Clinton, Iowa; 13 Grandchildren and 6 Great-Grandchildren. Funeral services for Luther A. Zimmerman will be Wednesday, December 17, 2014 at 10:30 a.m. at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. Burial will follow in the McCune cemetery with Military honors conducted by Brown-Bishop Veterans of Foreign Wars Post # 704. on December 13, 2014.⁴

Zimmerman, son of Samuel Grant Zimmerman and Emma Eulalia Amos, on June 19, 1949 at McCune, Crawford Co., Kansas.^1,2,3 Dorothy J. McGown died on March 17, 2008 at McCune, Crawford Co., Kansas, at age 79.^1,2,3 She McCUNE -- Dorothy J. Zimmerman, 79, a lifelong rural McCune resident, died at 8:45 p.m. Monday, March 17, 2008, at her home. She had been in failing health. She was born on Feb. 14, 1929, at rural McCune to John and Florence (Burch) McGown. She grew up on the family farm, attended country schools and graduated from McCune High School. She then attended Kansas State Teachers College in Pittsburg. She taught for several years at the Pleasant Valley and Green Elm country schools. She married Luther Zimmerman in 1949 at the United Chapel Church near McCune. He survives of the home. She was a homemaker and assisted her husband on their farm near McCune for many years. She was a member of the United Chapel Church at rural McCune, where she was a devoted Sunday school teacher, was involved with the youth and taught Bible school until her illness prohibited her from being active. She influenced and touched many lives through her Christisan witness. She had devoted her life to her family and church. Survivors include a son, Steve Zimmerman and his wife, Ruth, of rural McCune; three daughters, Jeanne Dent and her husband, Henry, of Carrollton, Ga., Susan Cheney and her husband, Nick, of Girard and Betty Anne Hall and her husband, Mike, of Springfield, Mo; 14 grandchildren, Amy and Stephan Pittman, Laura and Katie Dent, Nicholas and Lukas Cheney, Will, Drew, Jonathan, Mary and Sarah Zimmerman and Greg, Chris and Erin Hall; and five sisters, Betty Zimmerman of Clinton, Ia., Patty Mustard of Irving, Texas, Marietta Munding of Parsons, Helen McDonald of Mesa, Ariz., and Margaret McColm of Columbus. She was preceded in death by an infant sister. The service will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at United Chapel Church near McCune. Burial will be in McCune Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Smith-Carson-Wall Funeral Home in Girard. The casket will remain closed during the visitation. Memorials are suggested to the United Chapel Church and these may be left at or sent to the funeral home, 518 West St. John, P.O. Box 258, Girard, 66743.
