"Sarg" Burns of Eugene, who died Jan. 7 of complications from a stroke. He was 90. Burns was born Sept. 30, 1912, in Elmira to Mark and Nellie Salzman Burns. He married Luce James in Las Cruces, N.M., on Aug. 3, 1938. He attended Elmira schools and returned to Lane County after 31 years in the Army. Besides being an ROTC instructor at Oregon State University, he served during World War II in the Pacific and the Philippines. He also served a two-year tour in Austria and was then assigned to various places throughout the West and Southwest. After retiring from the Army in 1962 at the rank of master sergeant, he worked 10 years for the U.S. Postal Service in Eugene. He enjoyed walking, hiking, traveling, caring for his yard, playing cribbage and bingo and being a fan of the Ducks and the Beavers. He belonged to the National Association of Retired Federal Employees, the Veterans of Foreign Wars and St. Mary Catholic Church. Survivors include his wife; two sons, John of Charleston, S.C., and Michael of Bend; two daughters, Louanne Widmer of Santa Clarita, Calif., and Teresa Ewoniuk of Eugene; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. A son, Richard, died previously. Tuesday's service will be at 12:15 p.m. at St. Mary Catholic Church in Eugene. Andreason's Cremation & Burial Service in Eugene is in charge of arrangements. Memorial contributions may be made to O'Hara Catholic School. on January 13, 2003.2,8

Salzman, on August 3, 1938 at Las Cruces, Dona Ana Co., New Mexico.1,3 Maria Luz "Luce" James died on February 8, 2015 at Eugene, Lane Co., Oregon, at age 99.2,3 She Luce Burns died peacefully at home on February 8, 2015 from natural causes. She was born in Mexico on April 10, 1915 to John James and Petra Bustillos-James. At age 18 she came to the United States with a US Army family, as their Nanny, and lived in Corvallis Oregon where the family was stationed. There she met her future husband, Ellwood who was also in the Army. They married on August 3 1938 in New Mexico. During their military life they lived in Corvallis, OR, Seattle WA, Salzburg, Austria and finally Ft Lewis Washington. After 32 years in the Army, Ellwood retired and the family moved to Eugene Oregon. They raised 4 children. Luce became a United States citizen in February of 1964. Luce and Ellwood loved to travel in their trailer around Oregon and for many years spent parts of the winter in Indio CA. In 2000 they moved to the YAPAOH Terrace in Eugene. Ellwood died in 2003. They had 64 years together. Luce was a member of St Mary Catholic Church where she was involved in the Altar Society. She was also a member of the Wives of VFW. For several years she taught conversational Spanish at the Campbell Senior Center. She was an avid walker all her life right up until the day she died. She loved to cook, garden, read, crochet, play cribbage & Bingo and babysit grandkids. She was a wonderful Grandmother. She is survived by sons, John (Monique) Burns of Mt Pleasant SC, Mike (Sandy) Burns of Bend OR, daughters, Louanne Mackenzie of Bend, OR and Teresa (Rick) Ewoniuk of Eugene Oregon. She is also survived by her sister, Carmen James of Mexico as well as several nieces and nephews. A son Richard died at 5 days old in 1942. Luce had 9 Grandchildren: Renee, Dan, Mark, Mickey, Chris, Andy, Bob, Corey & Kim; and 7 Great Grandchildren: Olivia, Jack, Chase, Riley, Blake, Harlan & Audrie. A private Inurnment at Mt Calvary will be later in the day. on February 15, 2015.3
