Kress, one of the most prominant residents of Central Pennsylvania, died at the Lock Haven hospital this morning at 9 o'clock. He has been a patient there since July 11 of last year and had been his usual helath until Thursday afternoon when he suddenly grew weaker, death being caused by anemia. He had suffered a stroke of paralysis about 20 years ago. In a few more weeks he would have celebrated his 84th birthday. The announcement of the death of Captain Kress will cause widespread mourning in this city, the upbuilding of which he had a large part. His record of accomplishment is one that is achieved by few and his abilities commanded the highest esteem not only of the people of this city but of his many friends throughout the state. Captain Wilson Conrad Kress was born July 14, 1836, in Lycoming county, and was the son of George B. and Eliza Dunlap Kress, his father having been a farmer. His paternal grandfather, Conrad Kress, came to Pennsylvania from Germany when two years of age, in 1760, and served with the early patriots in the Revolutionary War until peace was declared. Captain Kress early in his life taught school and graduated from Dickinson seminary in 1859, after which he continued to teach school, and studied law during his spare hours. Having located in Lock Haven in June, 1861, he began publishing the Lock Haven Press, but retired Irom editorial work in August, 1862, to enter the Union army in the war of the rebellion, enlisted in Company E, 137th P. V. I., of which he was appointed first lieutenant. He was later made captain of Company K, 37th regiment, and assigned to service in the army of the Cumberland. When his regiment was mustered out of service, he was appointed deputy provost marshall of this district, which post he held until the close of the war. In October, 1864, while in Keating township, this county, endeavoring to round up Isaac Gains, Jr., a deserter from the army, he was shot through both lungs by the said Gaines, the ball entering the right side and being removed from the left side. The wound was a serious one and his life was in the balance for a time, but eventually he recovered to the surprise of his surgeons and friends. After the war, captain Kress completed his law studies and was admitted to the bar of Clinton county in May, 1866. He soon enjoyed a lucrative practice and in later years he became on of the abelest attorneys of Central Pennsylvania and appeared before the court in many of the most important civil and criminal cases tried in Clinton county, including numerous trials. He always took an active part in politics and frequently represented the Republican party at state conventions, was a member of the state committee and chairman of the county committee, as well as presiding officer of niminating conventions many times. In 1888 he was a member of the electoral college which cast its vote for General Harrison for president. In 1891 he was chosen, as a delegate to the constitutional convention. From 1881 to 1884 he was a member of the Lock Haven City Counsil from the First ward, and in 1888 he was elected a councilman-at-large under the act of 1887, and served as president of Select Council for more than a year, when the act was declared unconstitutional. After the war he served as assistant adjutant general in the Pennsylvania National Guard, with the rank of lieutenant-colonel. In 1895 he was appointed State Supreme court reporter, which position he held for a number of years. In his later years he devoted his entire time to the practice of law and became associated with B. F. Geary, Esq., and at the time of his death was president of the Clinton County Bar association. Captain Kress was a member of the F. and A. M. and the G. A. R., having been a past commander of John S. Bittner post, G. A. R. He was also a member of the Lock Haven Lodge of Elks. He was united in marriage in 1869 to Eliza J. Chatham, daughter of Hon. S. Smith, died at her home, No. 105 East Water street, at 4 o'clock Thursday afternoon, following a brief illness of pneumonia. Her death came as a shock to that lady's many friends, as it was known to only a few that she was confined in the house. On Tuesday of this week Mrs. Smith was able to be about but was suffering from a cold; pneumonia developed and her death ensued in less than 48 hours. Mrs. Smith was one of this city's most estimable women and her loss will be felt in various ways. She was a life long member of the Church of Christ and was greatly interested in missionary work. Always active in the work for her Master, and a liberal contributor to the cause made Mrs. Smith a sincere, Christian woman, and her death removes from the church one of the most consistent members. Since the organization of the Daughters of the American Revolution she had been a charter member and was chaplain at the time of her death. Her husband, who is aged about 85 years, and is one of the oldest physicians of the Homeopathic school that is still practicing, was prostrated by the death of his devoted wife, who was his constant companion. Mrs. Smith, prior to her marriage, was a daughter of the late John Chatham (actually James Chatam, corrected in next day's edition), one of the prominent citizens of this city in earlier history. Aside from her husband, two sisters and one brother survive as follows- Mrs. Austin Stull, Williamsport; Wiliam Mitchell Chatham, Albany. N.Y., and Mrs. W. C. Kress, this city. Funeral services will be conducted at the family residence at 11 o'clock Monday morning by Rev. D. R. Moss. Ph. D., pastor of the Church of Christ. The stern, relentless hand of death has again fallen upon the family of Mr. and Mrs. John H. Miss Chatham was first seized by the dread disease about three years ago and made a valient fight for her life. She was able to be about until about two weeks ago and no one supposed that the end was so near. She was of a bright, cheery dispostion and made friends of all who came in contact with her. She was a student at the Central State Normal school for several terms end taught in the public schools of the county for three years. Although not a member of any church, she had always lived a christain life and was closely indentified with church work. During her illness she bore her suffering patiently and cheerfully and tried her best to lighten tbe burden of those who ministered to her wants.
