     Arthur Wayne Carpenter was buried at Elk Mountain Freewill Baptist Church Cemetery, Little Plumtree Creek Road, Newland, Avery Co., North Carolina.⁴ He Arthur "Wayne" Carpenter, 67, of Plumtree, North Carolina entered into his eternal home to be with his Lord and Savior on Thursday, September 28, 2017, surrounded by the love of his family. Wayne was born in Avery County on June 14, 1950 to Lemuel and Vinnie Lee Carpenter. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his grandparents: Brown Low and Mary Carpenter and Wil and Lottie Woods; and brother-in-law, Bob Thomas. Wayne was a loving husband, dad and grand-paw. Wayne was a member and deacon of Burlesons Chapel Freewill Baptist Church. His passions were his family, friends and raising Christmas trees. He never met a stranger and was always up for a long conversation. Left to cherish his memories is his wife of 47 years, Frances Carpenter; sons: Trace Carpenter and his wife, Linda, Donnie Carpenter and his wife, Sarah and Jamie Carpenter, all of Plumtree. He was truly loved by his grandchildren: Shane Carpenter, David Carpenter, Sophia Carpenter, Jadie Carpenter and Allie; brother, Milas Carpenter and his wife, Pat, of Hickory; and sister, Martha Thomas of Burnsville. He was a member of Chestnut Dale Baptist Church, where he had served as a deacon; a veteran of the U.S. Army, where he served from 1939 to 1945 in World War II; a retired carpenter; past commander of DAV; and he loved to watch NASCAR races. Mr. Sparks is survived by his wife, Lucy Wood Sparks of the home; a son, Skip Sparks of Morganton; three daughters, Betty Morris and Marion McCall of Hickory and Velma Corn of Old Fort; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and a stepgreat-grandchild; two brothers, Homer Sparks of Charlotte and Charles Sparks of Hudson; two sisters, Doris Harmon of Asheville and Alta Gragg of Blowing Rock; and a host of nieces and nephews.      Rosa Nell Wood Rosa "Nell" Tolbert waited upon the Lord to renew her strength and on Thursday 1/19/12 she mounted up with wings as eagles to be received by Him. Many lives were touched by Nell's dedication and love for her Savior Jesus Christ through the many years she taught Sunday School Classes or the songs she sang at Friendship Freewill Baptist Church but mostly by the "sermon" she lived all her precious life. She was born Feb 14, 1929 to parents William and Lottie Jane Wood. In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her loving husband, Henry Wisdom Tolbert, three sisters, and one brother. She was a proud and nurturing mother of 6 sons, C.W. Wood and his late wife Dorie, Dave Tolbert and wife Linda, Jerry Tolbert and wife Sara, Bill Tolbert and wife Darlene, Ronnie Tolbert and wife Cindy and Junior Tolbert and wife Tina, and 3 beautiful Daughters, Patricia "Pat" Cross and husband Phillip, Darlene Price and husband Frank, and Bonnie Moore and husband Jackie. She was "Granny" to 17 Grand Children; Christine Wood, Jennifer Stratton, Chad Cross, David Tolbert, Scott Tolbert, Joey Tolbert, Jerry Lynn Tolbert, Tracy Tolbert, Billy Tolbert, Angie Peters, Lori Blevins, Tabitha Moore, Travis Tolbert, Stephanie Tolbert, Rebecca Tolbert, Daniel Tolbert and Shannon Roark. She also had 21 Great Grand Children and 1 Great Great Grand Child. She is also survived by two sisters, Christine Booher and Gladys Arnold and by one brother, Jack Wood. Burial will be at 3:30 on Sunday at Glenwood Cemetery. Grandsons will serve as pallbearers. At the age of 18, Jack began serving as a deacon at Friendship Freewill Baptist Church. He continued serving the body of Christ as a charter member at Cornerstone Freewill Baptist Church, where he held the position of Senior Deacon and sang in the choir for 50 years. He was a member of the Zollicoffer Masonic Lodge and the Jericho Shrine Temple. Jack was preceded in death by his loving wife of 58 years Beulah Gross Wood. Survivors include: Daughter – Donna Guinn and husband Timmy; Grandchildren – Nathan Guinn and wife Laura, Hannah Guinn; Sisters – Gladys Arnold and husband Sid, Christine Booher; Brother – C.W. Wood; Several nieces and nephews and his church family. Interment will follow at Rooty Branch Cemetery. Pallbearers include: Gary Webster, Tim Gross, Jimmy Gross, Trevor Gross, Justin Gross, and Buster Rogers. Honorary pallbearers will be the loving members of his church and his many friends. She was also involved in area civic organizations. She was employed at Monroe Calculating Co., H&R Block and Tri-Cities Security Co. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John C. Holbrook, her daughter, Joyce Holbrook Myers, and her sister, Gladys Robinson Anderson. Survivors include her daughter, Judy C. Holbrook of the home; granddaughter, Misty Myers Ramey and husband Cliff of Bristol Tennessee; grandson, Barry Ray Myers II and wife Stacy of Bristol Tennessee; and great-granddaughter, Madalen Brook Ramey of Bristol Tennessee. A funeral service will be conducted at 7 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 3, 2008, in Akard Funeral Home Chapel, with the Rev. Stephen Playl and the Rev. Gary Montgomery officiating. The committal and interment will be at 11 a.m. Monday, Feb. 4, in Mountain View Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Barry Ray Myers II, Cliff Ramey, Robert Holbrook, Roger Holbrook, Larry Harley, Barry Myers, Brian Myers and Barry Hogue. Honorary pallbearers will be Danny Phillips, Dick Bates, Don Johnston, R.E. Goodpasture and employees of Tri-Cities Security Co. The family would like to extend their appreciation to Dr. Jonathan Dixon and the staff of Bristol Regional Medical Center for their professional and tender care of Susie. on February 2, 2008.²
