Funeral service was held Thursday, June 10, at 5 p.m. at Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke, with the Rev. R.C. Wagner officiating. Interment was private. He was born Jan. 22, 1939, in Ivanhoe, son of the late Homer H. and Sallie Lowe Gray. He served in the U.S. Navy for four years from 1956 to 1960. He began work in 1960 for Dixie Bearings Inc. which later became Applied Industrial Technologies where he retired as a mid-Atlantic regional manager after 44 years of service in 2004. He was preceded in death by his ex-wife, Frances Barber Gray; a brother, Clifford Gray; two sisters, Euna Lambert Brown and Helen Pierce Shiflett; and three nephews, James Pierce, Larry Gray and Mark Shiflett. Survivors include his son, Michael Gray and wife, Denise Clark-Gray, of Blue Ridge; a brother, Frederick Gray of Roanoke; nieces, Teresa Shiflett Moore and family of St. Louis, Mo., Sonya Shiflett and family of Madison, Ala., Penny Gray and family of Chesterfield; nephews, Billy Shiflett of St. Louis, Mo., Dennis Gray and wife of Richmond; very close friends, Lawrence, Betty and Chad Clark, Bobby, Sandy and Matthew Brown, all of Roanoke; his mail carrier, Bill Green of Roanoke; his fishing buddy and former co-worker, Earl Fields of Salem; and a host of cousins. The family thanks the staff of Lewis-Gale Medical Center, Springtree Health and Rehab and the UVA Medical Center for their care. He was a kind and giving man that will be missed by all that knew him. Memorial donations may be made to a charity of choice. Oakey's North Chapel, Roanoke, was in charge of the arrangements. on June 12, 2010.1

He was born Sept. 27, 1924, in Elk Creek, a son of the late James and Nancy Hale Brown. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Anna Darlene Kincer Brown; his second wife, Euna Lambert Brown; three brothers, Clarence Brown, Garnett Brown and Lonnie Brown; two sisters, Virginia B. Tarter and Anna B. Osborne; and two great-grandchildren, Cameron Webb and Hunter Webb. Survivors include his mother, Helen Pierce Shiflett of St. Louis, Mo; a half brother and his wife, Billy Shiflett of St. Louis, Mo., and Sonya Shiflett of Madison, Ala; a half sister and brother-in-law, Teresa Shiflett and Kevin Moore of St. Louis, Mo; an uncle with whom he made his home, Frederick Gray of Roanoke, Va; two other uncles, Allen Gray of Roanoke, Va., and Con Brown of Wytheville, Va; a great-uncle and great-aunt, Howard and Nona Gray of Pulaski, Va; a niece, Kelsey Moore of St. Louis, Mo; and three nephews, Devon Moore of St. Louis, Mo., Andrew Shiflett and Matthew Shiflett, both of Madison, Ala. The family will receive friends Tuesday, Nov. 23, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Barnett Funeral Home. The family suggests that those who prefer may make memorial donations to the Good Samaritan Hospice or Jubilee House Calls in Roanoke, Va. The family would like to thank Good Samaritan Hospice, especially Ginny Fisher and Brenda Hawks; and Dr. Alice Inouye of Jubilee House Calls.
