Jared Robert Morrow1,2
M, b. October 8, 1959, d. October 7, 2010
Father | Wallace G. Morrow1 |
Mother | Patricia Jane Cole1 |
Jared Robert Morrow Jared Morrow passed away on October 7, 2010, after a long battle with cancer. His loss will be deeply felt by our science and all that knew him. He was born in Modesto, California, in 1959. Jared received his A.A. from Columbia Jr. College in 1980, his B.A. from Humbolt State University in 1983, his M.S. from Washington State University in 1989, and his Ph.D. from the University of Colorado in 1997. He initially taught at Northern Colorado University (1997–2005), but moved to San Diego State University (SDSU) in 2005. Jared’s central interest was in middle Paleozoic depositional history and event stratigraphy. He made considerable contributions to our knowledge of impact phenomenon (e.g., PALAIOS, 2006, v. 21, p. 313–315) and to lithofacies studies and conodont paleoecology (e.g., Courier Forschungsinstitut Senckenberg 2000, v. 219, 57 p.) He had published extensively with other colleagues, particularly Charlie Sandberg (e.g., Morrow et al., 2005, GSA Special Paper 384, p. 259–280; 1998, Journal of the British Interplanetary Society, v. 51, p. 451–460). The primary focus of his field research was in Nevada, but he also worked in Morocco and Siberia. Jared had a Fulbright Graduate Fellowship at the Universität Göttengen, Germany (1993–1994), and travelled extensively to understand impact and extinction events. He was an extremely hard-working individual with a deep love of the field.
Jared was a beloved teacher who was devoted to his students and provided them with extensive field experiences, often international. He was the undergraduate advisor at SDSU. He was actively involved with the American Association of Petroleum Geologists Student Chapter, helping to bring in such short courses as SEPM #51 Continental Ichnology taught by Stephen T. Hasiotis, who was also a colleague of and good friend of Jared’s.
Besides his remarkable academic achievements, Jared was an intelligent, kind, quiet, and gentle soul with a subtle sense of humor. He was my field assistant in 1986 but returned to work with me virtually every field season since that time, and he even came to work with me in 2009 after his first round of chemotherapy. His contributions to my Cretaceous research led me to name a species of marsupial, Dakotadens morrowi, after him in 1993 (Journal of Vertebrate Paleontology, v. 13, 105–124). His quiet thoughtfulness is reflected in his love of the music of Bill Evans (jazz pianist), which we listened to by a thousand camp fires.
Jared is survived by his mother and father (Wallace and Patricia Morrow), his brother (John) and sister (Jana Morrow Baker), and his wife (Robin Groppi). We are all much poorer by his loss.
