     Earl Robert Shorter was buried at Yopp Family Cemetery, Franklin Co., Virginia.⁴ He was born on April 26, 1942 at Franklin Co., Virginia.² He married Shirley Mae Nichols, daughter of Cleveland Henry Nichols and Lou Ella "Ellie" Hall, on February 16, 1962 at Charlottesville, Virginia.¹ Earl Robert Shorter died on May 15, 2010 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 68.³ He Earl Robert "Papa Smurf" Shorter, 68, formerly of Callaway, Va. went to meet his parents Thomas and Ethel Shorter and son Mark A. Shorter and sister Mary Nichols on Saturday May 15, 2010. He made his home with a nephew Russell and Amanda Biggs of Thaxton, Va. He is survived by his son, Jimmy R. Shorter, Stuarts Drafts, Va; daughters, Lisa Hunn of Glade Hill, Lucy S. Underwood of Callaway; sisters, Nancy (Tommy) Murray of Vinton, Betty (Fletcher) Nichols of Callaway, Hilda Caldwell of Wirtz, Deborah Shorter of Roanoke; number of nieces and nephews; fourteen grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and good friend, Dawn Greever. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m. Tuesday May 18, 2010, at Flora Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Bud Nichols officiating. Interment will follow in the Yopp Family Cemetery. His family will be receiving friends 6 to 8 p.m. Monday May 17, 2010, at Flora Funeral & Cremation Service 665 South Main, Rocky Mount. on May 16, 2010.⁴

His parents, Earl Shorter, Roanoke; and Shirley Nichols Shorter, Rocky Mount; one brother, Jimmy Shorter, Staunton; two sisters, Lisa Marie Janney and Lucy Florentine Shorter, both of Rocky Mount; his maternal grandmother, Louella Nichols, Callaway; also surviving are several aunts, uncles, nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be conducted 2 p.m., Sunday, October 23, 1994, at the Arrington Bussey Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. James Opetaia' Williamson officiating. Burial will follow in the Yopp Family Cemetery, Callaway. Friends may call after 2 p.m. Saturday, at the Arrington Bussey Funeral Home, where the family will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Arrington Bussey Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. on October 22, 1994.²
