After graduating high school, she furthered her education, earning a Bachelor of Science degree in 1988 from Radford University in Education. She then attained her Master's Degree in Reading. Carol married her husband of forty-five years, William Terrill Hurt, Jr., in 1964. She worked for more than twenty years as a teacher at Shawsville Middle School at Montgomery County Public Schools before retiring. In her free time, she volunteered with the Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts of America. She was an avid band booster parent representative for many years at Shawsville High School (Eastern Montgomery High School). In her earlier years, she was a youth director with her husband at Midway Baptist Church. Later in life, she was a Sunday school teacher for the ladies' class at Seneca Baptist Church. She found enjoyment in reading, working crossword puzzles, following the Chicago Cubs baseball team, and attending the Salem Red Sox minor league baseball games.
