     Hazel Josephine Carson was born on January 20, 1924 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^1,2 As of December 3, 1941,her married name was Wertz.¹ She married John Lewis Wertz Sr., son of Newton Hezekiah Wertz and Okie Lee DeWeese, on December 3, 1941 at Starkey, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^1,2 Hazel Josephine Carson died on March 16, 2008 at Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 84.^3,2 She Hazel Carson Wertz, 84, of Roanoke, passed away Sunday, March 16, 2008. She was born January 20, 1924, in Roanoke, a daughter of the late Virgil Carson and Beulah Crowe Carson. She was also preceded in death by her husband, John Lewis Wertz Sr. and brothers, Carl Thomas Carson and Melvin Eugene Carson. An active member of Belmont Baptist Church for over 40 years, working in the clothes closet, she was also a member of the Mountain Dale Lodge #49 of Rebekkas and was retired from ITT after 28 years of service. Surviving are her daughter, Hazel Wertz Garrett, of Roanoke; son, John Lewis Wertz Jr., of Stow, Ohio; five grandchildren, Martha Wade, John Garrett, Dana Garrett, Thomas Wertz, and Lt. April Wertz; six great-grandchildren, Justin Wade, Jeremy Wade, Kelsey Wade, Jennifer Garrett, Michael Ferguson and Nikki Phelps; and one great-greatgrandchild, A'Darius Pitt. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the Roanoke chapel of Lotz Funeral Home with the Rev. John Fox officiating. The family will receive friends Tuesday from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. at Lotz, Roanoke. on March 18, 2008.²
