"Etta" Southern, in 1909 at Aledo, Mercer Co., Illinois.6 Maurice A. Baker died on February 2, 1928 at Millersburg, Mercer Co., Illinois, at age 39.3,4 He Grippe Tablets Killed Farmer, Jury Declares. Maurice A. Baker of Joy Dies Suddenly After Taking Patent Medicine. Aledo, ILl, - "death by poisioning of the blood caused by patent grippe tablets" is the verdict of a coroners jury investigating the sudden death of Maurice A. Baker, a farmer, at his home near Joy, yesterday. Mr. Baker died an hour after taking the tablets. He came home from the timber yesterday at 10:30 a.m., where he had been working and asked Mrs. Baker for an early dinner so he could return to his work. He complained of not feeling well and took the "cold and grippe" tablets which he had received in the mail recently in a "sample package" from a firm in St. Louis. Mrs. Baker prepared his lunch, placed it on the table and had gone back to her work in the kitchen when she heard him fall. She found him on the floor. He complained that he was dizzy and could not sit on a chair. A few minutes later he died. Coroner A. N. Mackey was called and conducted an inquest. Members of the jury were: M. E. Brldgeford, Irvin Balmer, I. P. Reed, R. C. Kiddoo, J. W. Steele and R. C. Steele. Mr. Baker was born Oct. 13, 1888, and had lived practically all his life in Mercer county. He is survived by his widow and four children. Burial will be in Peniel cemetery at Joy. on February 3, 1928.4

At Margie’s request no formal visitation or funeral services will be held. Cremation has taken place with Cremation Services of North Iowa in Mason City. Scattering of her cremated remains will take place at the Peniel Cemetery in Joy, Ill., at a later date. Margie May Armbruster was born May 25, 1922, in Joy, Ill., to Maurice and Sadie (Thompson) Baker. She received her education in the Joy School System in Illinois. On April 24, 1956 Margie was united in marriage to Richard Allison Armbruster in Charles City. Following marriage the couple had made their home in Floyd until moving to Charles City in 1957. Margie had lived in Charles City for last 50 years. Throughout her life Margie had been self employed offering her cleaning services for private homes in Charles City and the surrounding area, until retiring in 1984. Margie had been a homemaker, involved with the Seventh Day Adventist Church in Charles City for many years and enjoyed hooking rugs and piecing together jigsaw puzzles to pass the time. Although Margie and Richard did not have children of their own, the couple enjoyed time spent with several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Richard A. Survivors include his wife, Jean; children and their spouses, Renee (Mike) McKinley, Durant, Iowa, Sherry (Tery) McDowell, Taylor Ridge, Ill., Luanne (Bryan) Anson, Muscatine, Iowa, and Eugene (Juli) Reynolds, La Crosse; 16 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; sisters, Wilma Warren, Kewanee, Ill., and Mary Bergman, Hampton, Ill; and brothers, Dean Reynolds, Rock Island, and Larry Reynolds, Peoria, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson and eight brothers and sisters. on February 22, 2003.2

     Virginia L. Baker Virginia L. Cook, 74, of Davenport, IA, passed away Sunday, October 21, 2018, at Genesis East Medical Center in Davenport. She was born May 23, 1944, in Rock Island, IL, the daughter of Virgil Loren & Merle Ferne Cooper Baker. She met her life partner, Edward D. Barnes, Sr. in 1984. He preceded her in death on August 29, 2018. Survivors include her daughter, Tina (Dan) Baker of Milan, IL; sons, Loren Cooke of Davenport, IA and John (Tara) Cooke of Ironwood, MI; fourteen grandchildren; twenty-one great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Virgil and Duane Baker; and one son Paul C. Cooke II.2 She was buried at Peniel Cemetery, Joy, Mercer Co., Illinois.6 Her married name was Cooke.7 She married Larry Henry Cooke.7 Virginia L.
