Dead is Mrs. Gladys Saunders, 56, Elkview, Rt. 1. Mrs. Saunders was killed almost instantly when the car driven by her husband Emmett, 62, and one driven by Dickie Painter, 19, of Elkview, sideswiped at Elk Hills on U.S. 119 late yesterday afternoon, Trooper Sidney C. Shrewsbury of the Clendenin state police reported. Mrs. Saunders was dead on arrival at Charleston general hospital where her husband was admitted with a skull fracture, multiple cuts and a back injury. The trooper said the Saunders car, after the impact with the other machine, veered into a truck driven by Michael Richardson, 20, of St. Albans. Neither he nor Painter was injured. No charges have been filed Trooper Shrewsbury said. Surviving Mrs. Saunders: husband, Emmett; sons, Richard and Bobby of Elkview Rt. 1, one daughter, Mrs. Melva Seabolt of Elkview Rt. 1; parents, Mr. and Mrs. George Campbell of Elkview Rt. 1; brothers, Bazil of Frame, Ira of Elkview Rt. 1 and Thurman of Appalachian, Fla; sisters, Mrs. Bula Weese and Mrs. Ivy Hayes of Charleston; 10 grandchildren; and one great-grandchild. Burial will be in Tinsley Cemetery on Wills Creek. on March 13, 1965.3

She is survived by three daughters, Charlotte Hoffman of Largo, FL, Edra Smiley of Charleston, WV, and Brenda Watton of San Diego, CA; one son, Roy Sanders, of Elkview, WV; two sisters, Janet Web of Spencer, WV and Violet Frank of Roanoke, VA; nine grandchildren, thirteen great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Helen spent the majority of her life in San Diego, CA, attended college, worked towards her goal as a dietician and developed a successful career. She enjoyed bowling, board games (especially scrabble), crocheting, and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Helen was a wonderful cook and took great pleasure in preparing and serving her special dishes to the family. She will be interred in Singing Hills Memorial Gardens, El Cajon, CA beside her late husband, James Eoch. The family wishes to extend their gratitude to the physicians and nurses at CAMC cardiopulmonary intensive care and the palliative nursing staff at Hubbard Hospice in Charleston, WV for their kindness and loving care given to our mother in her final days.1 She was buried at Singing Hills Memorial Park, 2800 Dehesa Road, El Cajon, San Diego Co., California.1 Her married name was Sanders.2 She married Richard Durant "Dick" Saunders, son of Emmett Gay Sanders and Gladys Elizabeth Campbell.2 Ruby Helen Swiney was born on November 19, 1927 at Kanawha Co., West Virginia.1 She died on July 22, 2017 at Charleston, Kanawha Co., West Virginia, at age 89.1
