Roger Douglas Lakes Sr. Roger D. (RD) Lakes Sr., 71, of Daleville, Va., died on Monday, October 27, 2014, at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital following a brief illness. Roger was born in Roanoke on April 28, 1943, and lived in the area all of his life. He has lived in Daleville for the last 14 years. Roger was the son of the late Horace Gilbert Lakes and Emma Eleanor Ferguson Grant. He was a conductor with the Norfolk Division of Norfolk and Southern Railroad, retiring after 38 years of service in 2003. He served in The United States Marine Corps during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Roger had attended Lakeside Baptist Church, was a member of the Catawba Moose Lodge and enjoyed model airplanes, air shows; and riding motorcycles. in addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister, Helena L. Granger. He is survived by his former wife and their children, Marie Tayloe Simmons of Gloucester, Va; son, Roger Douglas "Doug" (Dianna Stanley) Lakes Jr. of Roanoke; daughter and son-in-law, Vicky Lee and John Fuller of Morgantown, Pa; his wife of 26 years, Rebecca "Becky" Lakes of Daleville; stepchildren, Wayne Semones of Wytheville, Va., Melissa (Keith) Whitten and Sheri (Kenny) Jones, all of Daleville; 12 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; sister and brother-in-law, Jean and John Brusati of Asheville, N.C. Roger's family would like to thank the staff of the CCU at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital for their care. She is also survived by one sister, Virginia Setchel, of Vinton; two brothers and their wives, Dan and Janice Morehead, of Lamsburg, Va., and Bill and Georgia Morehead, of Tazewell, Va; and several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Tayloe was a graduate of Radford College and retired from the City of Roanoke. Graveside services will be at Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens. on December 26, 2009.4
