Lucy McIlwaine Jones1,2

Lucy McIlwaine Jones Lucy McIlwaine Hale, 95, of Charlottesville, Virginia, died on Saturday, March 25, 2017, at the Martha Jefferson House. She was born on October 27, 1921, in Petersburg, Virginia. Mrs. Hale was the daughter of Lucy McIlwaine Davis Jones and Ralph Harvey Jones, who preceded her in death. She was also preceded in death by her husband, William Newton Hale II. Mrs. Hale grew up in Petersburg, Virginia, on the campus of Southern College, from which she later graduated. Her great- grandfather had founded the College during the Civil War. Her grandfather subsequently was president and her mother was the academic dean. She came to Charlottesville as a young bride while her husband was in architecture school. After his untimely death in 1954, she began work with the international students at the University of Virginia, at the urging of the late history professor Edward Younger. At that time, the international program was handled largely as a faculty committee assignment. Mrs. Hale ultimately became Director of the International Student Office and member of the general faculty at the University of Virginia. In that role, she was responsible for Fulbright Scholars and other international scholars, visitors from the Experiment in International Living and other programs, review and provision of visas and other documents, as well as the administration of the International Center, named for her assistant Lorna Sundberg. Her concern for the visiting international scholars and students, as well as for their wives and families, led her to establish the Charlottesville International Hospitality Committee, the International Wives Club, and the Host Families Program, all of which sought to connect international visitors with the Charlottesville and Albemarle community. At the time of her retirement in 1987, Mrs. Hale turned her attention and talents to gardening and landscaping, her family and friends, and her beloved cabin at Browns Cove. Mrs. Hale is survived by her daughter, Lucy Pryor McIlwaine Hale of Charlottesville, Virginia; and her son, William Newton Hale III of Louisa, Virginia. She is also survived by her granddaughters, Martha Grace Hale of Louisa, Virginia, Carrie Elizabeth Hale and her husband, Barton Carroll, of Seattle, Washington, Leah Maureen Hale and her husband, Amaury Rolin, of Brussels, Belgium, and Lucy McIlwaine Hale of Charlottesville, Virginia; and a great-grandson, Aubert Q. Rolin, also of Brussels. The family wishes to thank the entire staff of the Martha Jefferson House for their tender care and loving attention; Shelby Cosgrove, her devoted care-giver and friend for many years; and Dr. Sharon Meth, her caring physician. Interment at Monticello Memory Gardens.2 She was born on October 27, 1921 at Petersburg, Virginia.1,2 As of September 7, 1940,her married name was Hale.1 She married William Newton "Billy" Hale Jr., son of William Newton "Willie" Hale Sr. and Virginia Lee "Virgie" Smith, on September 7, 1940 at Petersburg, Virginia.1,2,3 Lucy McIlwaine Jones died on March 25, 2017 at Charlottesville, Virginia, at age 95.2
