Born Jan. 10, 1927, in Sarton, she was the daughter of the late Andrew and Lula Pence. Mrs. Furrow was a retired dietitian at Shady Spring Elementary School for the Raleigh County Board of Education and a former employee of J.C. Penney, Beckley. She was a member of Perry Memorial United Methodist Church, Shady Spring, served as chairperson of the Outreach Committee, was a member of the Disciple Bible Study Group, Sanctuary Choir, Ercie Allen Sunday School Class and the United Methodist Women. She was preceded in death by her husband of 49 years, Vonley Furrow; an infant son, Ralph Michael Furrow; and her oldest sister, Pauline Parker. Survivors include a daughter, Martha and her husband, the Rev. M. Steven Meadows; a grandson, Nathaniel C. “Nate" Meadows of Morgantown; three brothers, Maynard Pence of Sarton, Andy Pence of Ravenswood and Millard Pence of Sarton; and four sisters, Bernice Weikle of Frederickstown, Ohio, Mary Cummings of Mabscott, Lillian Hill of Gap Mills and Hazel Perkins of Union. Burial will follow in Blue Ridge Memorial Gardens, Beckley. on January 10, 1999.2

     Maxine Ann Wooten Maxine Ann Furrow, 84, of Union, passed away Monday, May 22, 2017. Born November 17, 1932 in Lilly Brook, WV to the late John and Mabel Wooten. Maxine was a member of Mt. Alexander Church, The Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 122, Red Hat Society. Maxine loved dancing and was an avid Elvis fan, listening to his music and collecting his memorabilia. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years, Willie Lloyd Furrow; brothers, James, Robert, John and Ben Wooten; sisters, Irene Hope, Willa Clayton and Marcella Gautier. Those left to cherish her memory include her sons, Billy Furrow and significant other Angela, James Furrow and wife Lisa and David Furrow and wife Sandra; daughter, Marcella Forren and husband Billy Patterson; brother, Tivis Wooten and wife Sue; six grandchildren, five great grandchildren, host of nieces, nephews, cousins and special friends. Burial will follow at the Mt.      Rita Jean Dean Rita Jean Furrow, 66, passed on to her Heavenly Home on Tuesday, October 11, 2016 at her home after a courageous 3 year battle with cancer. She was a lifelong resident of Guest River in Norton, Virginia and she retired from Virginia Employment Commission after 34 years of service. She was preceded in death by her parents, Delbert and Pauline Gardner Dean; and two brothers, Richard “Ricky” Ray Dean and Edward “Eddie” Wayne Dean. Surviving are her husband of 46 years, Steve Furrow; son, Brian Keith Furrow of Norton; daughter, Michelle Denise Morgan and husband Scott of Kingsport, TN; granddaughter, Rachel Autumn Morgan; brother, Marshall David Dean and wife Tammy; sister, Tammy Kaye Smith and husband Bobby all of Wise; and a host of nieces, nephews and other family and friends. A special Thank You to the wonderful staff at Hospice and Pallative Care of Norton, VA especially Diane and Barbara, as well as deep heartfelt thanks to Tammy M. He leaves behind his loving wife of 31 years, Helen Canaday Hoke; daughter, Haley Hoke-Mahon and husband, Edward; son, Billy Hoke II, and fiancée, Amanda Bullock, and her two children, Summer and Logan; three brothers, Emory Hoke and wife, Nancy, of Hollywood, W.Va., Lindsey Hoke and wife, Margaret, of Crows, Va., Henry Hoke and wife, Lena, of White Sulphur Springs; three sisters, Violet Feury and husband, Myles, of Gap Mills, Wanda Ferguson and husband, Walter, of Iron Gate, Va., Martha Galford and husband, James, of Gap Mills, W.Va; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. Interment will follow at Hoke Family Cemetery, Glace. on November 7, 2007.6
