He lived there with his parents until he was four years of age and then move to Wappello county, Iowa and from there to Marion, where he was engaged in farming. On September 18, 1917 he was married to miss Hazel Ella Miller of Cedar Rapids and to this union was born one son. He is survived by his wife and infant son, his father and one brother. He was called to the colors August 6, 1918, and left Marion for Jefferson Barracks and from there was transferred to Camp MacArthur, where he received his training. He was a member of the 14th Co. A. R. D. He sailed for France from Camp Merritt, N.J. Appended is a letter received by Mrs. Brennaman from Edward O. Clark, chaplain of the 7th Artillery in France. Somewhere in France, October 10, 1918. Mrs. Hazel Breneman: Permit me as officiating chaplain to extend to you my deepest sympathy in the loss which you have sustained in the death of your husband, Lloyd J. Breneman. Be assured of the heart felt gratitude of our republic for your sacrifice, heavy though it has been. With the regular funeral service and the band playing "Nearer My God to Thee" your husband was buried at sea. His body draped with the stars and stripes and he was given full military honors. The captain of the ship, the colonel in command with officers and six fellow soldiers as pall bearers were in attendance. Your husband's death, while not occurring on the firing line, was in the line of duty. His life has not been given in vain. The cause is even now triumphing. I pray the comfort and support of the divine Father and Creator of us all, you. on November 16, 1918.3

She was born July 2, 1890, in Keokuk County, the daughter of Charles and Famy Bucher Conner. She married Chester Utterback February 10, 1918. They farmed southwest of Sigourney until moving into Sigourney in 1964. They moved to the Manor House Nursing Home in 1975. She was a member of the Christian church in Sigourney, the Chastain Goodwill Club and the Pioneer Barracks Ladies Auxiliary of the Veterans of World War I. Besides her husband, she is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Louise Veldhuizen and Mrs. Harold (Betty) Claypool; a son Dean Utterback; 12 grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and a sister, Mary Conner. She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter, a great grandchild and a sister. Services were held July 12, at the Sigourney Christian church with Rev. George Mullins officiating. He was a 1939 graduate of Sigourney High School and attended Park College through the U.S. Navy V-12 program while serving as a hospital corpsman during World War II. He graduated in 1946 from Parsons College at Fairfield with a B.S. Degree in mathematics and science and received his M.A. Degree in education from Butler University in 1952. He graduated that same year from the Christian Theological Seminary at Indianapolis, Ind., with a B.D. Degree. He received his masters of religious education degree from Drake University in 1957 and had completed many hours of post graduate study in psychology at the University of Iowa. Rev. Bensmiller served as pastor for 10 years in the Disciples of Christ Church at Leon and Kearney, Neb., before moving to Mount Pleasant. He taught summer religion courses at Iowa Wesleyan College in the early 1960s. He taught math in Burlington High School for the past 28 years. He was a constituent of the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant and was serving on the Administrative Board. He was a member of the American Legion, the Burlington Education Association, the NEA, the Iowa Math Council, and many national and local organizations. Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert L. Bensmiller, Mount Pleasant, and John L. Bensmiller, West Palm Beach, Fla; and two grandchildren. Visitation will begin at noon Friday with the family receiving friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Weir Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant. The service for Rev. Bensmiller will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant with the Rev. Christine Wagner officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Home Cemetery. Memorials have been established for the William L. Bensmiller Fund at the J. Raymond Chadwick Library of Iowa Wesleyan College and the First United Methodist Church. on June 13, 1991.3

Mrs. Bensmiller was a 1941 graduate of Argyle High School. She received a B.A. degree in English from Parsons College in Fairfield in 1945. Early on she taught at Columbus Junction High School, Sigourney High School, Smithville High School (Ind.) and Leon High Schools. She moved to Kearney, Neb. where in 1960, Mrs. Bensmiller was conferred with a M.A. in English from Nebraska State University of Kearney. Mrs. Bensmiller furthered her studies at the University of Iowa, the University of Massachusetts, International Graduate School and Drake University. From 1961 to 1966, she was assistant professor English at Iowa Wesleyan College. From 1966 until her death, she was an associate professor of English. She was director of freshman English from 1964–93 and chair of the Division of Language and Literature from 1978–90. In 1970, she originated The Writing Laboratory. She served on various faculty and administrative committees. Since 1974, she was the Advisor to the Blue Key National Leadership Fraternity. Since 1980, Mrs. Bensmiller has been the advisor to Sigma Tau Delta, International Honorary English Fraternity and the editor of DESIGN, the Iowa Wesleyan College literary journal. Mrs. Bensmiller received the Outstanding Professor of the Year in 1968, the Chadwick Teacher of the Year in 1982, and the Sears–Chadwick Teacher of the Year in 1990. Mrs. Bensmiller had some 275 poems published in a variety of religious, professional and college journals. Mrs. Bensmiller has been called to judge numerous national and state poetry contests since 1983 and to serve as a Workshop Presenter for Area Educational Agencies since 1984. Mrs. Bensmiller was a member of many teaching, poetry and English associations along with memberships in Sigma Tau Delta, P.E.O. Sisterhood, Chapter Original A of Mount Pleasant, and First United Methodist Church of Mount Pleasant. Survivors include one son, Robert Bensmiller of Mount Pleasant; three grandchildren of Mount Pleasant; and three brothers, John Royer of West Burlington, Joe Royer and William Royer, both of Burlington. Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, two sons, one sister and five brothers. Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Thursday at Weir and Kimzey Funeral Home in Mount Pleasant, where the family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. The funeral for Mrs. Bensmiller will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant, with the Rev. Edward R. Peterson and the Rev. Wayne K. Kamm officiating. Burial will be in Forest Home Cemetery in Mount Pleasant. Memorials have been established for Iowa Wesleyan College, First United Methodist Church and Midwest Old Threshers. on April 27, 2007.3

Born Feb. 19, 1954, in Leon, he was the son of Lloyd D. and Mildred H. Royer Bensmiller. Mr. Bensmiller was a graduate of Mount Pleasant High School and Iowa Wesleyan College. He completed a graduate program in counseling from Reed University in Miami, Fla., and worked in the psychiatric unit of Bethesda Hospital in Boynton Beach, Fla., until moving to Iowa City two years ago. Survivors include his mother; one brother, Robert L. Bensmiller of Mount Pleasant; two nephews and one niece, also of Mount Pleasant; and several other relatives in Iowa. He was preceded in death by his father, his grandparents and one brother. A private memorial service for Mr. Bensmiller will be Saturday at Donohue-Lensing Funeral Home in Iowa City. A private burial service will be in Forest Home Cemetery, Mount Pleasant, at a later date. A memorial has been established to Chadwick Memorial Library at Iowa Wesleyan College or Iowa City Hospice Inc., Iowa City. on March 1, 1996.3
