Jim was a native of Galax, Va., and graduated from Emory and Henry College in 1963. While there, he was a member of Beta Lamda Zeta Fraternity and the Emory and Henry Concert Choir under the direction of Charles Davis. Jim moved to Franklin County in 1963 and began his education career teaching at Burnt Chimney Elementary School. He then served as principal of Henry, Callaway, and Dudley Elementary Schools having completed his Master of Science Degree in School Administration from Radford University in 1969. While at Callaway Elementary School, he was the first coach of the little league football team, the Callaway Colts, and served as Scout Master for the Boy Scouts in the Callaway area. After leaving education, he served as Director of West Central 14H Center, (Skelton 4H Educational Conference Center), and was an agent with Meadow Spring Land and Realty. During the past five years, he was employed by Piedmont Community Services and worked at the Herrick House in Rocky Mount where he found great satisfaction in caring for his clients. Jim was a man of extraordinary talent and had many interests during his lifetime. He loved hunting with his English Setters, fishing Smith Mountain Lake, working on the farm, painting, woodworking, playing the guitar with his family, and appreciating many forms of music. He was a member of Crafts United Methodist Church where he served on the Finance and Parrish Relations Committees, and enjoyed painting signs for the church and its activities. He had a great capacity to love, to care for those in need, and believed in the importance of faith and love for his family, friends, and neighbors. Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Silas Jackson and Aline Leftwich Hayes of Galax a and his father and mother-in-law, Francis S. and Katie I. Poindexter of Glade Hill. He is survived by his wife of 35 years, Danna Poindexter Hayes; brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Connie Hayes of Galax; brother-in-law and wife, Charles D. and Janet B. Poindexter of Glade, Hill; brother-in-law, Gary N. Poindexter of Hurt; nephews, nieces and spouses, Staff Sgt. Will Hayes of Fort Belvour, Va., Matthew and Amanda Hayes and Nicholas and Becky Hayes of Galax, Ashton Poindexter of Richmond, Sherrie and Bill Mitchell of Rocky Mount, Walter and Kimberly Poindexter of Ferrum. He is also survived by six grandnieces and two grandnephews. on April 21, 2006.4
