Samuel Conner was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana; His tombstone says he was 69 years old.1 He It should be noted that Samuel married a Conner. There is no record in Terre Haute of Theresa's previous marriage, but their daughter Elizabeth was seven years old when they were married. Samuel was the most visible of the brothers. He was active in civic affairs throughout his life. He is listed in the Terre Haute City directory from 1858 (the first one), through the 1880's. In 1850 and 1856 he was elected to the City Council and during the Civil War (1860) he was elected sheriff of Terre Haute on the Republican ticket. He, along with other prominent members of the community sponsored and controlled a spiritualist. At various times between 1858 and his death in 1887 he was listed in the Terre Haute City Directory as a Blacksmith, City Councilman, Sheriff, Grocer, Feed Store owner and Realtor. The many property transactions in which the brothers are involved are listed in the Index of Deeds for Vigo County Court between 1843 and 1887. He is the Notary Public on some of these records. I believe Sam was the prime mover of the family in this direction. Sam's second marriage to Serrepta W. Wright may have been a situation similar to his brother Alex. Serrepta may have cared for him during his illness. The probate records indicate she received his property.1 He was born circa 1818 at Montgomery Co., Virginia.1 He married Thirza Conner on April 3, 1847 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.1 Samuel Conner married Serrepta W. Wright on January 29, 1887 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.6 Samuel Conner The Terre Haute Evening Gazette, on page 1, October 6, 1887, reports that Sam died of Typhoid Fever at 5:50 AM on Thursday, October 6, 1887. He was 69 years old and services were at his home, 339 N. 13th St., Terre Haute, Indiana. Sam's obituary mentions the following: "Samuel and his brother, Alexander, came to the city from the north in 1844 and opened a blacksmith shop." It goes on to state that he was Sheriff of Terre Haute for one term in 1860 (2 years). During this period it was his duty as sheriff to execute a person. The article relates how he confided to friends that this act was one of the most disturbing and troublesome things he had ever done in his life. He was also a prominent Spiritualist in the days of Pierce Hall where seances were held with prominent figures of the community. on October 6, 1887.7 He died on October 6, 1887 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.7,8

John R. Conner was buried at Woodlawn Cemetery, Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana; His tombstone says he was 52 years old.1 He John and his brothers, Alex, Sam, Andrew and Daniel were active in real estate from 1858 through the end of the Civil War. They also owned blacksmith shops and manufactured wagons as listed in the Business Directory of Terre Haute from 1858 through 1883. At various times they were in partnership with each other as recorded on property records and City Directories. The Terre Haute Evening Gazette lists the following on page 4, Thursday, February 22, 1883. "R. J. Sparks & Company yesterday closed the sale of 120 acres of land in Lost Creek Township from Mary Conner to Joseph Ripley for the consideration of $7,776.00." The grantee was probably one of Mary's brothers as her maiden name was Ripley. It should be noted that John lost several children in the 1860's. This is in keeping with the same occurrence with several of his cousins and their families in Virginia. Diptheria was rampant throughout the country during the war years, probably contracted in Army encampments and spread when soldiers returned home with the illness.1 He was born in 1828 at Russell Township, Putnam Co., Indiana.1 He married Mary Ripley on September 11, 1851 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.5 John R. FatherZadock Conner2,1 b. February 10, 1780, d. September 13, 1854

Daniel "Dan" Conner was buried at Forest Hills Cemetery, Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana.1 He was born on August 17, 1832 at Russell Township, Putnam Co., Indiana.2,1 He married Nancy Jane Jones on March 31, 1858 at Terre Haute, Vigo Co., Indiana.1 Daniel "Dan" Conner Daniel Conner is conducting a good business as one of the substantial farmers of Island Grove Twp. He has a farm on section 12, town 15, finely located on the old State road, half way between Springfield and Jacksonville and here he has erected all the buildings required to make a pleasant and convenient homestead. The estate is situated one and a half miles west of Berlin, and three miles northwest of New Berlin, which is a thriving village on the Wabash Railroad. The grandparents of our subject came to America about the year 1760, and settled on the James River. During the Revolutionary War the grandfather enlisted in the defense of the Colonies, and was one of the valient soldiers who freed this country from its subjection to England. At an early day, Zadock Conner, the father of our subject, came to Indiana from the Old Dominion. Prior to his removal West he was married, and of this union seven sons and three daughters were born. Shortly after settling in Indiana the wife and mother died, and the father was again united in marriage, his wife bearing the maiden name of Frances McGaughey. Two sons were born of this marriage, of whom our subject, Daniel was the youngest. He of whom we write was born Aug. 17, 1832 in Russell Twp, Putnam Cty, IN, and like all the boys of that day, grew to manhood with very little opportunities for education. He attended a subscription school three months during the winter season, walking a distance of two and one-half miles through mud and snow, and in the summer, worked on the farm. At the age of 20 years, he left home with the consent of his parents to go into partnership with a half-brother and learn the trade of blacksmith, then considered one of the best trades. On the 20th of Sept. 1852, he took his departure from the parental roof, and proceeding to the town of Fincastle, Putnam Cty., worked with his brother at their trade until March, 1854. We next hear of our subject at Terre Houte, IN, where he and his brother enlarged their business and took into partnership with them another brother, Andrew. In 1855, Andrew married, and our subject began to look for a wife, and at last found one of whom he thought would be an agreeable companion for life's journey, if he could get her consent. This was finally obtained , and on March 31, 1858, Daniel Conner and Nancy J. Jones, a native of Clark Co, IL, were united in marriage. This estimable lady was born Nov 25, 1832, and is therefore three months and 25 days younger than her husband. She is descended on her father's side from old Virginia stock, while her maternal ancesters were natives of New York. Both her parents died when she was a child of seven year and she was reared by a family of very strict Quakers, named Brooks. The eldest brother of Mrs. Conner served in the Mexican War, and coming home died soon afterward; another brother died of fever; the youngest brother enlisted in the regiment of which Gen. Grant was Colonel, and died in defense of his country at Murfreesboro; the second brother is still living and makes his home in this country. When Mrs. Conner had reached womanhood, she left her native State, and going to Terre Haute, IN lived with a brother there until his marriage. No children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Conner, but they reared a boy named W.G. Boos, whom they took under their loving care in 1866, and who has now attained a stalwart manhood. During the Civil War, Mr. Conner enlisted in the defense of the old flag in 1862, but, after serving a few months his health became so undermined that he was honorably discharged and returned to his home. In 1864, he sold his farm, and returning to Terre Haute, for a time worked at his trade, and later started a livery stable. In this enterprise he was unfortunate, being burned out in the fall of 1866. Then returning to his native county, he embarked in the blacksmith trade, but here also he was burned out. He had carried a small insurance on the stable but none on the shop. It will thus be seen that Mr. Conner has met with his share of misfortunes, and his presence comfortable competency is due entirely to his unremitting industry. Mr. Conner is a member of the Masonic fraternity, and is a stanch Republican, supporting those candidates who are pledged to work for the principles of the party. Mrs. Conner joined the Methodist Church in 1866, has been a faithful worker in Sunday-school and church, and until recently was Vice-President of the Foreigh Missionary Socitey of the District of Greencastle, IN. Mr. Conner has also been a faithful worker in the Methodist Church since the year 1869 and by his upright, consistent life has adorned the name of Christian. Coming to the State of Illinois in 1878, he has, during the period of his manly character and noble life will be remembered with affection long after he has passed to the bourne. whence no traveler returns. in 1891.3 He married Elizabeth Reeves after July 28, 1900.1 Daniel "Dan" Conner died on April 9, 1910 at Greencastle, Putnam Co., Indiana, at age 77.1
