Sherman was a World War II Veteran, and a lifetime member of the DAV. He was also a member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren where he had served as a deacon for many years. He was an avid farmer. Sherman was preceded in death by his father, Robert Aldine Nichols, and his mother, Lucy Holt Nichols; and his son, James Neil Nichols; his granddaughter, April Nichols Holt; and his brothers, Wayne Nichols and Eugene Nichols. Sherman is survived by his wife of 67 years, Effie G. Nichols. Also surviving are sons and daughters-in-law, Robert Stephen Nichols (Nancy), Harvey Sherman Nichols (Joan), Timothy Andrew Nichols (Susan), Thomas Aldine Nichols (Faye). Surviving sisters are Gertrude Young, Nadene Sloan, Shirley Moler (Jim); and surviving brothers are Alton Nichols (Pauline), Clyde Nichols (Glenna), Danny Nichols; a surviving brother-in-law, Cletus Green; sisters-in-law, Esther Reed (Zannie), Ruby Hurt and Ruth Nichols. His surviving grandchildren are Patrick Nichols, Henry Holt, Jessica Gillispie (Matt), Michael Nichols (Jamie), Andrew Nichols (Kimberly), Lori Lowry (Mike); and his great-grandchildren, Haden and David Holt, Aaron and Carleigh Anne Nichols, Lydia Gillispie, Rylan and Avery Nichols, Caleb and Lily Ann Lowry. Sherman is also survived by numerous nephews and nieces. Funeral services will be at Copper Hill Church of the Brethren 2 p.m. Monday, May 12, 2014. Pastor Marty Moyer will officiate.      Effie Ellen Green was born on February 6, 1928 at Franklin Co., Virginia.2 She married Robert Sherman Nichols, son of Robert Aldine Nichols and Lucy Evelyn Holt, on January 18, 1947 at Franklin Co., Virginia.2,3,4 As of January 18, 1947,her married name was Nichols.2 Effie Ellen Green died on March 7, 2023 at Copper Hill, Floyd Co., Virginia, at age 95.4 She Effie Green Nichols, 95, of Copper Hill, Va. Passed away on Tuesday, March 7, 2023, at her home. Effie was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas Jefferson Green and Nancy Jane Shaver Green. Other family members who predeceased Effie include her husband, Robert Sherman Nichols (whom she married in 1947); a son, James Neil Nichols; sisters, Esther Reed and Ruby Hurt; brother, Cletus Green; and a granddaughter, April Nichols Holt (Henry). Effie came from a large family, and siblings who preceded her in death include Oscar, Elijah, Luther, Moses, Mary, and Mittie. Surviving children include her sons, Robert Stephen Nichols (Nancy), Harvey Sherman Nichols (Joan), Timothy Andrew Nichols (Susan), and Thomas Aldine Nichols (Faye). Effie is also survived by grandchildren, Jessica Gillespie, Andrew Nichols (Kimberly), Patrick Nichols (Corina), Michael Nichols (Jamie), and Lori Lowry (Mike), numerous great-grandchildren, nephews and nieces. Effie is also survived by sisters-in-law, Ruth Nichols and Shirley Moyer. Effie was baptized at age 11 in a pond near her home. She was a life-long member of Copper Hill Church of the Brethren where she was a member of the Ladies' Aid Group, taught Sunday School and Bible School, and led the church choir. She attended Mount Pleasant School in Floyd County, and she later acquired her GED diploma and learner's permit for driving when she was in her 60s. During World War II, Effie wrote and had published a song, "Little Girl Don't Turn Me Down" (1943). She loved to cook and can meats, fruits and vegetables. She won a Blue Ribbon at the Salem Fair for her wonderful biscuits. During a conversation with Effie shortly after her 93rd birthday, she revealed the following which "made her happy" – having company in her home, talking on the phone, going to church, going to "Smith's Store," selling produce at the Salem Farmers Market, making quilts and sewing, looking at cookbooks, and going to craft shows. Effie was blessed in having devoted caretakers which allowed her to stay in her own home, including special friends, Rita Dalton, Barbara Taylor and Mary Anne Hodges. on March 10, 2023.4

Richard Hubert "Dick" Horne died on March 3, 2023 at Virginia at age 76.4 He The Rev. Richard Hubert "Dick" Horne, of Christiansburg, went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 3, 2023. He was 76 years old. He is survived by his daughter, Dr. H. He was preceded in death by his parents, Hubert and Louise Horne; aunts, Ernestine Slusher and Donna June Baber; his wife, Patricia Horne; and his son, Brian Richard Hubert Horne. The son and honorary grandson of funeral directors, he grew up in the profession. He and his parents lived in the funeral home until his teenage years. Dick was licensed by the Virginia Department of Health Professionals in 1969 and, in 2019, he was awarded his "Golden License" for 50 years of service to the profession. He considered it an honor to serve his community through his profession. Dick was born and raised in Christiansburg, Va. and was a member of Christiansburg High School's class of 1965. He continued his studies earning degrees from Ferrum College and Lynchburg College. He was ordained as a minister in the Southern Baptist Church in 1968 and preached at a variety of churches and different denominations including Baptist, Methodist, and Presbyterian. Dick felt led to return to the church of his childhood, Christiansburg Presbyterian Church and served as a faithful member for several decades until the time of his death. He preached over 940 funerals and performed dozens of weddings. Dick was dedicated to community service and began first in the Ambulance service through the funeral home and, in 1969, joined the Christiansburg Life Saving Crew, later known as the Christiansburg Rescue Squad, when they took over the ambulance service. He served there for eight years as chaplain and training officer. He was certified as a Basic and Light Duty Rescue instructor by the Virginia Association of Rescue Squads and was an American Red Cross First Aid instructor for many years. He also served as a Disaster Response Coordinator for FEMA. He also served over four decades on the Christiansburg Fire Department as a proud volunteer firefighter and in officer positions of chaplain and secretary-treasurer. The Montgomery County Board of Supervisors presented him with a 50 year service award. A longtime local history buff, Dick served as a member of the Board of Directors of the Montgomery Museum. Dick was a member of the Christiansburg's Chapter # 86 McDaniel Mason's lodge for over 50 years. Dick and his wife, Pat were animal lovers and their home often became a refuge for many stray animals who somehow knew they would find a loving home with them, and they did. Graveside Services will be private in Sunset Cemetery. on March 10, 2023.4

He was preceded in death by his grandparents; C. Hubert and Louise S. Horne, Norman and Frances Angle Knowles, and his mother, Patricia Knowles Horne. He is survived by his wife, Amy Hines Horne; daughters, Quinn Alexandra Horne, Makenna Christian Nichole Horne, Rachel Elizabeth Altizer (Daniel) and Olivia Grayce Woodrum (Preston). He is also survived by his sister and brother-in-law: H. Leveta Horne and Eric Brown of Melbourne, Florida, father; Richard Hubert Horne, and brother and sister-in-law; Jay and Gail Hines of Snowville, Virginia. Brian was a member of Good Shepherd Baptist Church and most recently attended Blue Ridge Church, in Christiansburg, VA. Brian was a Life Member of The Shawsville Volunteer Rescue Squad, an honorary member of The Christiansburg Volunteer Rescue Squad, and an active member of The Christiansburg Volunteer Fire Department, where he enjoyed the challenges of competing at both the Southwest Firefighter's Association Conventions and the Virginia State Firefighters Association Convention. Brian was employed with Horne Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Christiansburg. He was also a member of the Virginia Funeral Director's Association where he was active for many years with the State conventions and committees. Brian was also a member of Selected Independent Funeral Homes ,a member of The Virginia Independent Funeral Homes and the Blueridge Funeral Directors Association, where he was a past President – serving through all the Chairs. He was born in Floyd County, Va. on October 30, 1937 to the late Lemon Arvil and Bertha Sowers Keith. He was also preceded in death by an infant daughter Rhonda Lynn Keith; and four brothers, Charles Ray Keith, Franklin Delano Keith, J. C. Keith, Joe William Keith. He is survived by his wife, Geraldine H. Keith; sons and daughters-in-law, Ricky and Sandra Keith, Stacy and Miranda Keith, Chad and Tara Keith; daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Art Hamrick; eight grandchildren, Stephanie, Heather, Jessica, Carter, John, Isaiah, Bentley, and Easton; great-grandchild, Skyler; sisters and brother-in-law, Vera Hodge, Jewel and Randolph Vaden; brother, Arvil Keith and Elva; numerous nieces and nephews; and his faithful companion, Floyd. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, December 1, 2016 at 11 a.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home Chapel with the Rev. Craig Reed and Rev. John Hopkins officiating. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the LongShop-McCoy Rescue Squad, Box 489, McCoy, Va. 24111. Interment will follow in the Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Christiansburg. The family will receive friends Wednesday from 4 to 7 p.m. in the McCoy Funeral Home, 150 Country Club Drive, SW, Blacksburg, Va. on November 29, 2016.2

He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Harry Eugene Hall and Jean Louise Hall; and cousin, Jerry William Stump Jr. John is survived by his father and mother, John Barry Hall Sr. and Teresa Stump Hall; sisters, Amy Michelle Johnson, and Rene Daniel Hatfield and husband Joshua; nieces, MaKayla Lynn Jones, Kelsey Elizabeth Lenois, Kylie Anne Hatfield, Sophia Elizabeth Hatfield, and Isabella Grace Lenois; nephews, Bentley Austin Allen and Dominic Xavier Lenois; grandparents, Nellie K. Stump and Clarence W. Stump; uncles, William Garry Hall, Leslie Eugene Hall, Jerry William Stump Sr. and wife Teresa Price Stump; aunt, Geraldine Keith; as well as many cousins. John received his Bachelor of Science in Economics (Magna cum laude), Bachelor of Science in Business Information Technology (Magna cum laude), and Bachelor of Arts in English all from Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University on May 15, 2010. He graduated from the University of Ohio with a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice in Criminal Law on August 9, 2014. We love you and we will never forget you son. We thank God for allowing us to have you in our lives for such a short time to enjoy every precious moment you have given to us. Our hearts are broken and we will miss you terribly until we see you again some day and find you happy in the arms of Jesus. The family will receive friends on Monday, July 9, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Horne Funeral Home. The Funeral Service will be held on Tuesday, July 10, 2018, at 2 p.m. at Grace Life Baptist Church, with Dr. Timothy Hight officiating. Interment will follow in Piedmont Cemetery. on July 8, 2018.2
