He is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Peggy Jean Farmer Conner. Ryland was a loving husband, father, and grandfather who will be greatly missed. He was a member of the Church of God of Prophecy in Gretna and worked for many years for English Construction. In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Jeffrey David Conner and his wife Susan; four grandchildren, Barry Hamilton Smith, Jeffrey Scott Smith, David Moss, Jr. and his wife Stacey, and Lindsay Ballard and her husband Stephen; three great-grandchildren, Grace Ballard, Taylor Moss, and Sydney Moss; as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Wanda Ann Smith; a son, Mark Steven Conner, and brothers, Garnett Conner, Ray Conner, Onyx Conner, and Roger Conner. Born June 28, 1963 in Danville, she was a daughter of Nancy Motley Meadows of Chatham and the late Claude Swanson Meadows. Hope enjoyed music, drawing, writing poetry and her two dogs, Toby and Grizzly.
In addition to her mother, she is survived by her husband, Bill Doss of the residence; three sons, Maynard J. Conner of Chatham, Aaron Randall Doss of Chatham, and C.J. Doss of Chatham; two brothers, Claude Coleman Meadows and wife, Sylvia of Chatham and Tommy Meadows and wife, Dianne of Chatham; one grandson, Gavin Lee Conner; her mother-in-law, Mary Louise Doss of Chatham; and her sister-in-law, Betty Jo Adkins and husband, Tex of Chatham. She was born on October 16, 1937, in Danville, Virginia to the late Thomas Woody Mayhew and the late Cluster Florence Walker Mayhew. Ms. Conner is survived by her daughters; Janet Fuller and Susan Slaughter, her sons; Leroy Conner and Tony Conner, her sisters; Joan McDowell and Daphney Martin, one brother; Garry Mayhew, fourteen grandchildren, twenty four great-grandchildren, and one great great grandchild. Ms. Conner will always be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, friend, and someone who loved Jesus, and sharing her faith and trust in him with others.      Linda Carol Conner After a brief but fierce battle against cancer, Linda Emerson of 1187 Piney Road, Gretna died April 7, 2009 at her mother's residence surrounded by her numerous family and friends. Born April 15, 1957, she was the daughter of Myrna Conner and the late Garnett Conner. She is survived by her husband David Emerson; beloved son and his wife Jonathan and Melissa Emerson; brothers Leroy, Tony, and John Conner; sisters Janet Fuller and Susan Slaughter; and dearly loved nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She was employed at Chatham Cleaners for many years. She loved spending time on the lake, boating and swimming with her husband and children. Her favorite place to be was at home watching westerns, surrounded by her animals. The family would like to thank the nurses and staff of the oncology department of Lynchburg General. They did a remarkable job with giving her the best care there is to be had. Thank you Dr. Paul for not giving up, and giving Linda the time she so craved. Mr. Compton was born on Oct. 31, 1956, in Danville. He was a son of the late William E. Compton and the late Mary Elaine McDaniel Compton. He had lived most of his life in the Danville and Dry Fork area. He was employed as a maintenance supervisor for Virginia Solite for many years. He served in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the American Legion. He was a member of Sharon Baptist Church. On Dec. 20, 1985, he was married to Terry Conard Compton. In addition to his wife, of the residence, he is survived by two daughters, Michelle D. Livings, of Charlotte, N.C., Shannon C. Louhoff and husband, Ryan Louhoff, of Dry Fork; one sister, Janet C. Owens and husband, Emory Owens, of Danville; two brothers, William E. Compton Jr. and wife, Joy Compton, of Dry Fork, and Mark Compton and wife, Jan Compton, of Elon, N.C. He also leaves behind their loving dog, "Sadie". He was predeceased by one brother, Richard Compton. Military rites will be held by American Legion, Dan River Post 1097, Honor Guard. on October 24, 2009.²

     Joyce Ann Bragg Joyce “Granny” A. Simpson, 73, passed away on December 5, 2018, at Virginia Beach Healthcare and Rehabilitation Center in Virginia Beach, Virginia. Joyce was born on May 5, 1945, in Chatham, VA to her parents, Norman and Mary Bragg. She married Roger Conner and later Fitzhugh Simpson. She lived with her son Robert Conner in NC and moved with him to SD where she worked as a cook. She became disabled in 1998, but continued to care for her grandchildren. She moved to Virginia Beach in 2009 where she helped care for her great-grandchildren. Ms. Simpson was a loving, caring person who was a “Granny” to all who knew her. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law Brian and Amy Conner; grandchildren April, Crystal, Joshua, Rebekah, and Gabriel; and 7 great-grandchildren.
