He is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Terri and Bill Hodge of Shrewsbury and Toni and Bob Hibbs of Sissonville; sons and their wives, Mark and Lois Fitzpatrick of Ward and David and Christy Fitzpatrick of Culloden; brothers, Eric of Minnesota, Edwain of Bellville, Ill., Adrian of Georgia, Danny of Youngstown, Ohio, and David Rhodes of Beckley; sisters, Janie Butler of Maine and Martha Martin of Blacksburg, Va. The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, March 14, at O'Dell Funeral Home, Montgomery, with the Rev. Sandy Cook officiating. Burial will follow in Kanawha Valley Memorial Gardens, Glasgow. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

She earned an Associate degree from Southern Seminary in Buena Vista, VA, a Bachelor's Degree from Radford University in Radford, VA and taught kindergarten in Alexandria and Fredericksburg, VA. She moved to Fresno, CA when her husband was transferred here. She became a preschool teacher and director for Head Start at Orange Center and then Funston and earned her California teaching credential at Fresno State College. She earned her reading specialist credential and master's degree at Fresno Pacific College. She taught for Fresno Unified School District at Dailey Elementary School for 16 years. She was known as an exceptionally gifted teacher who created an exciting learning environment her students. She filled her classroom with books as well as all sorts of fascinating materials. Over the years many students have returned to see her, thanking her for their experiences in her classroom. She taught in the School of Education at Fresno Pacific University as well at California State University Fresno. She was noted for her expertise in children's literature and inspired many teachers with her joy and enthusiasm in ways to engage students with a wide range of texts. Debbie was co-owner of Petunia's Place, a bookstore for children and young adults where she worked after retiring. There she inspired more readers, both adults and children. She took great delight in helping reluctant readers find just the right book to engage them and talking with avid readers about books they enjoyed. Debbie was preceded in death by her adoptive parents, William and Dorothy Paul. She is survived by her dear Fresno family, Jean and Patrick Fennacy, and their numerous relatives who embraced her as family. These include Michael and Patti Fennacy and their children, Austin, Nathan, Luke and Cole, David Lynch, Mary Helen Letson and Brian Letson. She was grateful for the medical attention she received at CCare and, in particular, from Dr. Pescuzzo along with Marcela, Irene and Stephanie. on September 11, 2016.2

She was preceded in death by her younger brother, Harry Lynn Murphy; her father, Robert E. Murphy Sr; and her niece, Tammy M. Jamerson. Jean is survived by her husband, Justice Retired State Supreme Court Judge the Honorable Richard H. Poff Sr; her mother, Mildred M. Murphy; her brother, Robert E. Murphy Jr. and his wife, Frances; two great friends, Toni Bufano and Martha Michaels, whom she cherished as her "friends forever," and a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends that she claimed as the best family anywhere. Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 29 at 2 p.m. at the Dunkum Funeral Home, Dillwyn with interment in the Dillwyn Town Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Sunday, January 28 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, Jean requested that memorial contributions be made to First Baptist Church, P.O. Box 32, Dillwyn, Va. and that all donations be divided equally between the Steeple Restoration Fund and the Helping Hands Ministry. on January 28, 2007.1
