Hospital early Tuesday following a short illness. Mrs. Furrow had arrived in Hampton Thursday to visit relatives. Mrs. Furrow was born Sept. 21, 1920 at Hinton, the daughter of Mrs. Lula Pratt Allen of Hampton, and the late Fred M. Allen. Mrs. Furrow was a member of the First Baptist Church of Shady Spring and a former chairman of the home advisory committee of Southern States Cooperative and assisted with the 4-H Club at Shady Spring Elementary School. her husband, Charles and Estel; two sons, Charles and David, both of Shady Spring: one sister, Mrs. Frances Zajac; one brother, Harold Allen, both of Hampton; and one grandson. on June 4, 1969.³

She was a graduate of Shady Spring High School and was a charter member of Bible Baptist Church. Erma was a faithful servant of the Lord, whom she loved with all her heart. In addition to her parents, Erma is preceded in death by her husband of 55 years, Robert "Bob" Slate Sr; and one brother, Estel W. Furrow. Those left to cherish her memory include her son, Robert W. Slate Jr. and wife Mable of MacArthur, W.Va; daughters, Barbara Hensley and husband Chuck of Cool Ridge, Bonnie Baginski of Cleveland, Ohio and Beverly Acord and husband Frank of Maple Fork, W.Va; sister, Ethel Mae Rash of Olin, N.C; brother, Emil Furrow of Shady Spring, W.Va; seven grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren; caregivers Darlene Plumley, Cookie Pauley and Sharon Arnold. Vernon Baptist Church where she was a former Sunday school teacher. She also enjoyed quilting and crocheting. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death on Dec. 18, 1996, by her husband, Wade D. Rash, who she married March 10, 1944; a sister, Erma Lee Slate; a brother, Estel W. Furrow; and a great-grandson, Andrew "Drew" Miller. She is survived by a son, Michael W. (Joan) Rash, of Statesville; a daughter, Debra R. (Turnie) Miller, of Olin; two grandchildren, Steven (Millie) Miller and Jenna Rash; a great-granddaughter, Aria Miller; a brother, Emell F. (Anna Lou) Furrow, of Shady Springs, W.Va; and her special "guard dog," Marcus. Funeral services celebrating Ethel's life will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, July 18, at the Chapel of Mt. Vernon Baptist Church, with the Rev. Gary Marshall officiating. The body will lie in state for 30 minutes prior to the service and burial will follow in the church cemetery. on July 17, 2013.⁵

He was born in Singers Glen on January 20, 1926, and was a son of the late Rosa (Furrow) and Samuel Adolphus Gay, Sr. Sam retired from Southern States in 1986, and had previously worked at American Safety Razor and Staunton Stockyard, but he was a farmer at heart. He loved his many tractors that he collected. He was a member of Parnassus United Methodist Church. Sam served his country in the U.S. Army during WW II on the Larkspur Hospital Ship from 1944-46. He was united in marriage on August 28, 1947 to Flora Mae (Crum) Gay, of Mount Solon. Surviving in addition to his wife are his children Ellen Rawley & husband Robert, of Mt. Solon and David Gay & wife Colleen, all of Mt. Solon; and his greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren that visited him daily, Bryan & Krista Rawley, Josh & Rebecca Rawley, Christopher Ellis & Angel Ellis, and Brittany Gay & Justin Jewell. Numerous Great-Grandchildren, Luke, Grayson, Eli, Silas, Jacob, and Jordyn Rawley, Allen, Divine Hope, Jase Ellis, Bella Rose North and Remy Wade Jewell. He was preceded in death by his brother Albert M. Gay. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at Parnassus United Methodist Church with Pastor Vicki Barb and Pastor John Christophel officiating. Burial will follow at Parnassus United Methodist Church Cemetery with military rite by the Dayton American Legion Post #27. on November 12, 2019.³
