Okes Coal Co., the founder of Okes Family Farms, and was a retired school bus driver for Raleigh County Schools. He was a longtime member of the Ghent Area Volunteer Fire Department, former member of the Raleigh County Republican Executive Committee and a recipient of the Honorary State Farmer Degree of the West Virginia Association of Future Farmers of America. Clyde was a member of Ghent Missionary Baptist Church, where he served as a teacher, deacon, and had taught Sunday school for over 60 years. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his stepfather, Robert "Pop" Jolly; father and mother-in-law, Burl and Donna Epperly; twin daughters, Janet and June; grandson, Winford Dillard; great-grandson, Timmy Harris; brother, William "Scott" Oakes; sister, Cora Okes Greco Porterfield; and son-in-law, Dr. Jorge A. Allende. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Mary Epperly Okes; daughters, Willa Dillard and husband, Winford, of Lakeland, Fla., and Sandra Allende-Donahue and husband, Richard, of West LaFayette, Ind; a son, Fred Okes and wife, Connie, of Cool Ridge; eight grandchildren, Waynette and husband, Marlon Harris, of Christianburg, Va., Wanda McKirahan and husband, Patrick, of Rocky Mount, N.C., Waelon Dillard of Lakeland, Dr. Jorge A. Allende and wife, Megan, of Ukian, Calif., Jeffrey Allende and wife, Page, of Richmond, Va., Kevin Okes and wife, Jennifer, of Cool Ridge, Emily Carver and husband, Daniel, of Cool Ridge and Amanda Okes of Cool Ridge; 12 great-grandchildren, Michael, Christopher, Kimberly, Matthew and Maddie Harris, Kevin and Megan McKirahan, Mercedes and Luciana Allende, Ashe and Catherine Allende, and Abigail Okes; a brother, John Jesse Okes of Medina, Ohio; sisters, Ruth Hatcher Cook of Matheny and Polly Jolly Mitchel of Phoenix, Ariz; a brother, William "Bill" Jolly of Shady Spring; and sister, Lucy Worley of Ohio. Service will be noon Monday at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home, Shady Spring Chapel, with the Rev. Charlie Hudson, the Rev. Gerald Kelly, the Rev. George Speck and the Rev. Doug Walls officiating. Mary Virginia Epperly Mary Virginia Epperly Okes, 92, of Okes Family Farms Cool Ridge, passed away after a long illness at Bowers Hospice House in Beckley on Monday, January 11, 2010. Born March 26, 1917, in Cool Ridge, She was the daughter of the late Burl O. and Donna B. (Lilly) Epperly of Cool Ridge. Mrs. Okes was a homemaker who loved her garden, flowers and family. She found comfort in being outside and being with her grandchildren. She loved going to church and listening to Gospel music. Mary was a member of the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren for over 70 years and also attended the Ghent Missionary Baptist Church with her husband for many years. Besides her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 68 years, Clyde V. Okes; father and mother-in-law, Fred and Willie Okes; twin daughters, Janet and June; grandson, Winford Dillard; great-grandson, Timmy Harris; son-in-law, Dr. Jorge Allende; and twelve brothers and sisters Acel Epperly, Lena Epperly, Wayland Epperly, Ralph Epperly, Claude Epperly, Katherine Peters, Nellie Clark, Pauline Epperly, Lakie Car Shrewsbury, Audry Sullens, Geneva Shrewsbury Lilly, and Joy Allen. Surviving are her children, Willa Dillard and husband, Winford, of Lakeland, Fla., and Sandra Allende-Donahue and husband, Richard, of West LaFayette, Ind; a son, Fred Okes and wife, Connie, of Cool Ridge; eight grandchildren, Waynette and husband, Marlon Harris, of Christianburg, Va., Wanda McKirahan and husband, Patrick, of Rocky Mount, N.C., Waelon Dillard of Lakeland, Fla., Dr. Jorge A. Keyser-Bryant Funeral Home, Beckley, is in charge of arrangements. Dr. Allende, 73, of Shady Spring, Raleigh County, died Dec. 10, 1987, in a Beckley hospital after a long illness. He was an ophthalmologist and a graduate of the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina, Medical School. He practiced in Argentina before coming to the United States where he did postgraduate work at Harvard and practiced at Fairfax Medical Center, Fairfax, Va. until his retirement. He was a member of St. Stephens Episcopal Church, American Medical Association, Virginia Medical Society and Virginia Society of Ophthalmology. Surviving: wife, Sandra Okes Allende; sons, Jorge Jr. of Chapel Hill, N.C., Jeffery of Morgantown; daughter, Alicia Beatriz Allende of Buenos Aires; sister, Lucia Cantelupi of Buenos Aires. on December 12, 1987.2

He lived on the family farm with his late wife of almost 47 years, Connie Okes. He was a member of the Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren for 28 years. Survivors left to cherish his memory include, son, Kevin Okes and wife, Jennifer, of Cool Ridge; daughters, Emily Carver and husband, Daniel, of Shady Spring, and Amanda Young and husband, Kenneth, of Frametown; his grandbabies, Abigail and Austin Okes of Cool Ridge and David Carver of Shady Spring; his best friend and cousin, Bill Tom Shrewsberry. Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Friday, January 5, 2018, at 2 PM, with Rev. Karl Reese officiating. Born on March 16, 1952, at Beckley, she was the daughter of the late Carey and Evelyn Armstrong Pitzer. She was a beloved teacher for 30 years, 25 of them at Shady Spring High School. She lived on her family farm with her husband, Fred. Survivors left to cherish her memory include her husband of nearly 47 years, Fred; son, Kevin and wife, Jennifer Okes, of Cool Ridge; daughters, Emily and husband, Daniel Carver, of Shady Spring, and Amanda and husband, Kenneth Young, of Frametown; the joy of her life, her grandchildren, Abigail and Austin Okes, of Cool Ridge, and David Carver of Shady Spring; her best friend, Jill Carver, and the members of the Apples of His Eye Bible Study Class at Daniels Missionary Baptist Church. She was a member of Crab Orchard Church of the Brethren for 28 years, where she taught the Upper Room Class. Funeral services will be conducted at Rose and Quesenberry Funeral Home Shady Spring Chapel on Sunday, November 26, 2017 at 2 PM with Rev. Gerald Kelley and Mr. Jim Campbell officiating. Mary Ruth Okes Mary Ruth Okes Hatcher Cook, 90, of Matheny went home to be with her Lord and Savior on Sunday, May 20, 2012, following a sudden illness. Born May 23, 1921, in Shady Springs, she was the daughter of the late Frederick Morton Okes and Willie Emeline Furrow Okes Jolly. Mrs. Cook was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Welch. She was a homemaker and a custodian. Her hobbies included genealogy, stamp and coin collecting, sewing, and church activities. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her stepfather, Robert "Pop" Jolly; her first husband, Carl H. Hatcher; second husband, D. Harley Cook; infant twin babies; brothers, Richard Jolly, Clyde V. Okes, William "Scott" Oakes, Edward Jolly, Robert "Buck" Jolly; and sisters, Cora Okes Greco Porterfield, Ethel Jolly Pickett, Lakie Jolly Shiflett, Marie Jolly Minnex, and Arabelle Jolly Lodge. Surviving are her son, Frederick Hatcher and wife, June of Matheny; daughter, Vickie Hatcher, of Winfield; three grandchildren, Kimberly Hatcher Harrison and husband, Kevin of Kopperston, Amy Hayes Nafchi and husband, Cyrus of Teays Valley, Nathan Hayes of Lake Jackson, TX; great-grandchildren, Erin Harrison of Kopperston and Amelia Nafchi of Teays Valley; brothers, John Jesse Okes of Medina, OH; William "Bill" Jolly of Shady Springs; sisters, Polly J.
