Marguerite Frances Ball On January 22, 2016 Marguerite “Reetie” Frances Ball Rouse Dayton Nerge left her earthly friends and family to join her heavenly friends and family. She passed away at the Halifax Health Hospice in Orange City where she had been residing since January 17 due to increasing complications with her heart. Marguerite was born March 1, 1922 in Hinton, Summers Co., WV to Claude and Lottie Light Ball. Two years later her father was killed in a logging accident. Times were tough for her mother, Marguerite and her younger brother, Claude “Sonny”. During the Great Depression, this small family lived in a little one room apartment. In 1937 Marguerite and Webster Rouse eloped to Kentucky and were married. Their daughter Carolyn was born the next year. Soon after her husband left and a divorce was granted in 1942. WWII started December 1941. Brother Sonny joined the Navy. From 1943 to 1945 Marguerite lived in Philadelphia and worked for the Navy as a file & mail clerk. In July 1945 she met her future husband George Dayton, a sailor in the Navy. After the war ended, she and George were married October 1945 in Michigan where his family lived. George adopted Carolyn. He worked in the accounting departments at the steel mills in Detroit. In 1957, the family moved to Miami, FL where she and George managed a Mexican Restaurant until 1979. They moved to DeLand, FL and on December 19, 1981 George died of a heart attack, ending 36 years of marriage. Marguerite got involved in volunteering at the Library, Art Museum, Garden Club, Hospital, American Legion Auxiliary and church. In 1986 Marguerite began dating the widower Herb Nerge living next door. They were married on Valentine’s Day 1987. After 28 years of marriage, Herb died December 26, 2015. She and Herb collectively have 3 children, 12 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren, and 1 great-great-grandchild. The family is grateful to Hospice for easing her final days and the many friends who visited her. For such a small lady, she had a big heart; always had a smile and a kind word for everyone she met.
