John was a 1939 graduate of Wabash High School and was a 1943 graduate and valedictorian of Indianapolis College of Pharmacy, now Butler University. He married Kathleen D. Pressler in Kokomo, Indiana on January 1, 1948. John was a Pharmacist's Mate 2nd class in the US Navy during WWII. He was a pharmacist and founded Daywalt Pharmacy in 1964 at 1048 Cass St. in Wabash, and moved the store in 1968 to its present location at 948 Cass St. He was a member of the Wabash Church of Christ and a former member and deacon of the Wabash Christian Church. John was a member and past president of the Wabash Area Chamber of Commerce, and was the Wabash Chamber Retailer of the Year in 1978. He was a member and past president of the Wabash City School Board, and a past member of the Wabash City Council. John was also a member of the Hanna Masonic Lodge #61, Fort Wayne Scottish Rite and Mizpah Shrine, the Wabash Shrine Club, and the American Legion Post 15. He is survived by his wife, Kathleen D. Daywalt of Wabash; two children, Diana (John) Odum of Loudon, Tennessee, Steven Todd (Susan) Daywalt of Wabash; seven grandchildren, Shelly (Scott) Powell of Asheville, North Carolina, Michael Odum of San Francisco, California, Kristi (Jeremy) Davis of Knoxville, Tennessee, Sarah (Chris) Grindle of Indianapolis, Indiana, Brian Daywalt of Fort Wayne, Indiana, Laura (Cory) Chapman of Temecula, California, Nathan Daywalt of Muncie, Indiana; great-granddaughter, Grace Powell of Asheville, North Carolina. He was preceded in death by his brother, Jimmie Daywalt, and his sister, Addie Daywalt. Funeral services will be held at Grandstaff-Hentgen Funeral Service, 1241 Manchester Ave. Wabash on Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 10:30am with Guy Provance officiating. Burial will be in LaFontaine I.O.O.F. Cemetery, LaFontaine, Indiana. Friends may call 2-8pm Tuesday at the funeral home. Preferred memorials are to the Animal Shelter of Wabash County or Alzheimer's Association. on January 24, 2010.³

Born here, he operated a grocery from 1940 to 1960 and was married to Helen F. Smiley of Jamestown in 1930. He was a member of the Methodist Church here, Waveland Masonic Lodge and Crawfordsville Sportsmen's Club, of which he was a director for several years. He was graduated from New Market High School in 1926. Surviving with the widow are a daughter, Mrs. Jane Paligraf of Crawfordsville; his mother, Mrs. Mayme D. Martin of Frankfort; a sister, Mrs. Roberta Allee, also of Frankfort and two brothers, Robert of Detroit and Chester in Illinois. on May 19, 1964.⁴

Smiley Sr. Mr. Smiley preceded her in death. Mrs. Smiley was a nurse's aide for Carman Nursing Home and Culver Hospital. She was also a member of First Baptist Church and the American Legion Auxiliary. Survivors include a son, Jon W. Peterson of Sacramento, Calif; a stepson, Robert Smiley Jr. of Crawfordsville; two daughters, Rebecca Risner of Crawfordsville, and Katherine L. Bryan of Mooresville; a sister, Jeanne Vanderkley of Kalamazoo, Mich; nine grandchildren; several greatgrandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a brother, William and sisters, Vera Royer, Vivian Cunningham, Betty West and Lois Brand. A memorial service will First Baptist Church with the Rev. James Ranard officiating. There is no visitation planned. on August 8, 2007.¹
