Born on February 20, 1931, he was a son of the late, Charles O. Markham Sr. and Ella Mae Markham. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Julian, Wallace and Gordon Markham; and two sisters, Beulah Wells and Mavis Short. Mr. Markham was a United States Air Force Veteran, serving during the Korean War. He was a supply officer for the Air Force, stocking 22 Air Force Bases in 22 countries. He traveled around the world 13 times, keeping all the bases stocked. He attended both Virginia Western Community College and the University of Virginia. A member of South Roanoke United Methodist Church, he enjoyed preparing the monthly church newsletter for delivery by the post office. He was an avid camper along the East Coast beaches, liked to travel in the New England states and Canada and enjoyed riding on his lawn mower. A member of the local AARP, he was a member of the local NARFE organizations. Mr. Markham worked in the Mental Health Field at the Salem Veterans Administration Medical Center, where he retired with 38 years government services. He also worked at the Roanoke Valley Mental Health Services. Surviving are his wife of 49 years, Peggy D. Markham; daughter, Lisa Michelle Lucas and husband, David Lucas; two grandsons, Jarrett David Lucas and William Owen Lucas; three brothers-in-law, Wayne Deel and wife, Kathy, of Orlando, Fla., Bobby Deel and wife, Dixie, and Michael Deel and wife, Michelle, all of Roanoke; and several nieces and nephews. The family would like to thank Lewis Gale ICU staff for their wonderful and loving care. Funeral Services will be held at 1 p.m. on Friday, May 6, 2011, at Sherwood Memorial Park Abbey Chapel. The Rev. L. Stanley Wright will officiate. Military Honors will be offered by the United States Air Force. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 5, 2011, at Oakey's North Chapel. on May 5, 2011.1

He was preceded in death by his parents, Stuart I. and Tillie A. Warren, and two brothers, Stuart I. Warren, and William R. Warren. Surviving are his wife, Gerry S. Warren; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Danny C. Warren, Charlotte, N.C., and Dean H. Warren and wife, Robin, Charlotte, N.C; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Donna W. Taylor and husband, Greg, Rocky Mount, Pam W. Smith, Roanoke, and Teresa W. Otey retired from the Roanoke Times and World News in 1993 after 40 years, and was a well known musician. He was an active member of The Elks BPOE #197. Mr. Warren was a member of the Williamson Road Lodge #163 A. F. & A. M., a member of the Roanoke Scottish Rite Bodies, a member of the Kazim Shrine Temple (and Kazim Shrine Band), The Noblemen, and a member of The American Federation of Musicians #165. Otey was a member of Rosalind Hills Baptist Church. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tuesday, from Oakey's Roanoke Chapel with the Rev. Tom Stocks officiating. Interment with Masonic Honors will follow at Evergreen Burial Park. Memorials may be made to the Shrine Crippled Children's Hospital, (950 West Faris Road, Greenville, S.C. 29605). Friends may call after 2 p.m. Monday at Oakey's Roanoke Chapel, where the family be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday. on November 15, 1999.2

He and his wife opened their home to 50 foster children. He loved and bonded to each child that came into his home, but there were some who had a special place in his heart and seemed like his own children. He always loved you Stevie, Abby, Matthew, Alex, Andy, Paul, LP, Justin, Bubby, Amanda and Jessica. Along with being a foster parent, he was a mentor to teenage boys through the military academy in Kingwood, W.Va. He is survived by numerous nieces and nephews. Though separated by circumstances out of his control, he loved and thought daily of Gene, Catherine and Francis Saville. Friends will be received 2-9 p.m., on Thursday, December 27, 2007, at Palmer Funeral Home, Inc., where services will be held at 1 p.m., on Friday. Interment in the Marcellous Postlethwait Cemetery near Wileyville, WV. on December 27, 2007.2
