The is survived by one sister, Lilly Snead Goodson of Danville; one granddaughter, one great-granddaughter and one great-grandson. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by one son, Charles Bernard Hardy. A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 17 at Mountain View Cemetery with the Rev. David Abernathy officiating. "Nita," passed away on March 2, 2014. For 64 years, she was married to Wallace Lee Chandler, retired Vice Chairman of Universal Corporation. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. Patient, generous and caring, she showed great passion for her family, friends and church. A business graduate of Madison College, now James Madison University, Mrs. Chandler served a term as first vice-president of the JMU General Alumni Association and as president of the Richmond Alumni Chapter. As a former National Officer of Alpha Sigma Alpha sorority, she served two terms as president of the Richmond Chapter and as convention chairman of the sorority's 75th National Anniversary Celebration in Williamsburg, Va. She participated as a former board member of Tuckahoe Women's Club. She served as a member and past president of the Richmond Attorney's Auxiliary, where she was very active in its docent programs. An active member of River Road Church, Baptist, for over 60 years, she served on the Board of Deacons, as Sunday School Superintendent, as President of the Baptist Women and several terms on the Board of Christian Education and the Board of Administration. Mrs. Chandler belonged to the Country Club of Virginia and was a former member of the Princess Anne Country Club in Virginia Beach. She was the daughter of Joseph W. Hodnett Sr. and Gladys H. Hodnett, was born on August 25, 1926 and grew up in South Boston, Va. Survivors include her husband, Wallace L. Chandler;three daughters, Elizabeth Chandler Hallberg and her husband, Marc D. Hallberg, Brenda Chandler Bell and her husband, Francis Bell V, and Blair Chandler Grappone and her husband, J. Michael Grappone; eight grandchildren, D. Lee Hallberg and wife, Katie R. Hallberg, Heather H. Donahue and husband, Matthew R. Donahue, Brittany V. Hallberg, Francis "Tripp" Bell VI and wife, Rachel S. Bell, Currie C. Bell and wife, Anna D. Bell, Christopher W. Bell, Ashley B. Grappone and husband, Lawrence D'Archangelo, and J. Michael Grappone Jr; one great-grandchild, Brynn R. Hallberg; and a sister, Jacqueline H. Szeifert of Punta Gorda, Fla. Her brother, Joseph W. Hodnett Jr. preceded her in death. A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 7, 2014 at 11 a.m. at River Road Church, Baptist, in Richmond, Va. Dr. Michael Clingenpeel and Dr. Daniel Bagby will officiate. The family will greet friends immediately following the service at a reception in the Fellowship Hall. A graveside service and interment will take place at Oak Ridge Cemetery, North Main Street, South Boston, Va., at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 8, 2014 for family and friends from that area. She was a member of the Women's Community Y and Friends of the Library in Leavenworth. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia Dalby (Garry) Arlington Va; son Michael McDonald (Janice), Shawnee, Kan; brother, John Yates (Connie) Lansing, Kan; and sister, Bette Anderson, Meriden, Kan. Other survivors include two grandchildren, Gregory Dalby, Torrance, Calif. and Kathryn Dalby, Arlington, Va., and three great grandchildren, Melanie, Ashley, and Matthew Dalby, Torrance, Calif. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward McDonald and two brothers, James Yates and Theodore Yates. Visitation will be 10:30 to noon on Monday, June 10, 2013 at the Davis Furneral Chapel in Leavenworth. Interment will follow at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be given to Women's Community Y, Leavenworth. on June 8, 2013.3
