He married Lavinia Byrd, also of Friendship, in 1949. Renowned in the state for his schoolboy and American Legion baseball accomplishments, he was signed as a catcher by the Pittsburgh Pirates in 1947 by Paul and Lloyd Waner. His baseball career was ended when his vision was seriously impaired in a collision with a teammate. Bill was a policeman for several years in Texas, then became a salesman grocery wholesale business in New Mexico. He returned to California in 1965 and was employed continuously by a Sacramento wholesale grocer for 25 years. He was a proud member of Teamster Local 150 for 25 years. He retired in 1991. Bill also started a landscaping business in 1980 which brought him many hours of enjoyment and many dear friends. Bill was a man of no small influence who believed in leading by example. He was known as a hard worker. He loved his family, his work, helping young people, cooking, fishing and hunting, baseball and basketball, all of nature, and digging in the dirt. He was an avid supporter of equal rights for women. Bill was a kind and special man, husband, and father who touched the lives of many and made the world a better and happier place. He will be in our hearts forever. on June 29, 1993.⁸
