Mrs. Carter was born on June 8, 1941 in Beckley, W.Va., the daughter of the late Royal Frank and Verna Evelyn Baker. She graduated Class of 1959 from Woodrow Wilson High School, in Beckley. She then attended West Virginia University and was active in many university activities, including President of her Alpha Delta Pi Sorority and Sweetheart of the Sigma Nu Fraternity. Mrs. Carter received her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education, along with minors in English and Social Studies, from West Virginia University in 1963. Mrs. Carter was a widely traveled and highly accomplished teacher of 27 years. Her teaching career began in Quitman, Ga. in 1963, where she taught for two years. From there, she traveled extensively, teaching in Shalimar, Florida, Bitburg, Germany, Alamogordo, New Mexico, and Green Cove Springs, Florida. Mrs. Carter then began her highly successful 17-year career as a fourth-grade teacher at Lakeside Elementary School in Orange Park, where she retired in 1996. During her time at Lakeside, Mrs. Carter positively enriched the lives of hundreds of children, as well as her fellow teaching staff. Mrs. Carter is survived by her beloved husband of 45 years, Colonel Samuel Carter of Orange Park, and her loving son, Chris of Atlanta, Ga. She is also survived by her sisters Libby Wood of Livermore, Calif. and June Jackson of Clendenin, W. Va. She was prececeased by her brother, Thomas Baker, of Aberdeen, Md. Service for Mrs. Carter will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, January 28, 2009, at Jacksonville Memory Gardens in Orange Park, with visitation at 3 p.m. A gathering of friends will be held at the Orange Park Country Club following the services. The family has asked that interested friends make a donation to Sav-A-Child, of Jacksonville, in lieu of flowers or other gifts. Mrs. Mary Carter is deeply loved and will be dearly missed by everyone having the pleasure of making her acquaintance. Arrangements by Jacksonville Memory Gardens. on January 26, 2009.1

She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Spencer. Prior to moving to Spencer, she had been an active member and Sunday school teacher at the Summersville Baptist Church and the First Baptist Church of Clay. Survivors include two daughters and sons-in-law, Sue and Curt Sayre of Dayton, Tenn., Mary Ann and Woody Wilson of Spencer; a son and daughter-in-law, Mike and Linda Nugent of Mineral Wells; nine grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. A funeral service and celebration of her life will be Thursday, Aug. 9, at 11 a.m. in the First Baptist Church of Spencer with the Rev. Michael F. "Mike" King and the Rev. Dr. Curtis Sayre officiating. Burial will be in the Mount Vernon Cemetery, Summersville. Friends may call at the John H. Taylor Funeral Home, Spencer, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday and at the church one hour before the service. Memorial donations are preferred to the Roane County Library, 110 Parking Plaza, Spencer, WV 25276. on August 8, 2007.3

Born Nov. 19, 1910, at Fayetteville, she was the daughter of the later Henry P. and Meda Stanley Epperly. Mrs. Burdette was a graduate of Fayetteville High School and Concord College. She taught school at Williams Mountain, Claypool, Green Sulphur, Meadow Creek, Brooks, Bellepoint and Central Grade Schools. She retired with 39 years of teaching. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hinton and was a member of the Fidelis Class at the church, and also a deaconess at the church. She was the last surviving member of her graduating class at Fayetteville High School. She was a member of the Hinton Womens Club, the Summers County Retired Teachers and the WV Association of Retired Teachers. She was preceded in death by four brothers, Herman, Robert, Woodrow and Bernard Epperly; one sister, Bess Good. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family. Survivors include her husband of 69 years, John E. Burdette; one son, Ed Burdette of Pipestem; one daughter, Jo Ellen Kerr of Hinton; four half-sisters, Mildred Ann Vermon of Fayetteville, June Campbell of Ohio, Mary Heldreth of Bluefield, Va., and Vella Jo Peterson of Illinois; two sisters-in-law, Kate Epperly of Allentown, Pa., and Juanita Epperly of Fayetteville; one grandchild, Cindy Ellis of Gulf Port, Miss; and one great-grandchild, Cindy Ellis of Gulf Port, Miss; and one great-grandchild, Morghan Ellis of Gulf Port, Miss; several nieces and nephews also survive. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Monday, Feb. 3, at Pivont Funeral Home, Hinton with the Rev. D.D. Elwell and the Rev. J.E. Johnson officiating. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of the service on Monday at the funeral home. Pallbearers will be: Jackie Hellems, Les Ellis, Martin Good, Bud Johnson and Jack Givens. on February 2, 2003.2
