John Adams "Jack" Wing believed you could make money and still play fairly, former colleagues said. Mr. Wing, who went by Jack, was CEO of The Chicago Corp., an investment banking and brokerage firm that he built into a major player in the field. He later was a professor at the Illinois Institute of Technology, where he founded a master's program focused on financial markets. "Jack was someone I looked up to in so many, many ways," said William J. Brodsky, chairman and CEO of the Chicago Board Options Exchange, where Mr. Wing was a board member for nearly 20 years. "I relied on him for a unique level of guidance and wisdom." Mr. Wing, 75, died of cancer on Sunday, Aug. 7, at Midwest Palliative & Hospice CareCenter in Skokie. He was a resident of Evanston. He was also on the boards of the Chicago (Midwest) Stock Exchange and National Futures Association and was inducted into the Futures Industry Association Hall of Fame in 2005. "He was one of the real godfathers of the modern options business, not only in Chicago but throughout the U.S.," Brodsky said. Born and raised in Elmira, N.Y., Mr. Wing graduated from Union College in Schenectady, N.Y., with a bachelor's degree in economics in 1958. He got his law degree from George Washington University Law School in 1963. After a hitch with the Military Intelligence Corps, Mr. Wing began working for the Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington first as a financial analyst and then as a trial lawyer. In 1966, he joined Investors Diversified Services in Minneapolis, where he eventually became the assistant to the president. In 1968, Mr. Wing moved to Chicago to become vice president and general counsel at A.G. Becker & Co. and served as the firm's president from 1975 to 1980. In 1981, he joined The Chicago Corp., where, during his tenure as CEO, he was instrumental in growing the firm into a major full-service regional investment banking and brokerage firm. After its merger with ABN AMRO Inc. in 1997, he became chairman of the board and chief executive officer of ABN AMRO. Mr. Wing left ABN AMRO to become executive director of the Center for Law and Financial Markets and also became the Frank Wakely Gunsaulus Professor of Law and Finance at IIT. Mr. Wing was a longtime supporter of education and the humanities. He was a life trustee and former chairman of the board of North Shore Country Day School and a life director and former board chairman of the Illinois Humanities Council. "Jack was someone who never missed a meeting," said Kristina A. Valaitis, executive director of the Illinois Humanities Council. "When he said he'd do something, he did it, and he'd put everything he had into it." He returned to school in his late 60s and in 2005 received a master's degree in liberal arts from the University of Chicago. The subject of his thesis: "The Banality of Greed." "Writing that thesis was very important to him, and not only as it applied to business but in every area of life," said his wife of 47 years, Joan. Until recently, he served as the chairman emeritus of newly reorganized The Chicago Corp. He also served on the boards of Rush University Medical Center, Ravinia Festival, Kartemquin Films, Chicago Shakespeare Theater and the Chicago Humanities Festival. In May, Mr. Wing was the recipient of the Public Humanities Award given by the Illinois Humanities Council for his contributions in advancing public understanding of the importance of the humanities. In addition to his wife, Mr. Wing is survived by a son, Willy Montgomery; two daughters, Elisabeth Montgomery and Mary Ellen Flaherty; a brother, Thomas; two sisters, Clara Stewart Wing and Alice Wing Ferrier; and nine grandchildren. A service will be held at 4 p.m. Thursday at Alice Millar Chapel, 1870 Sheridan Road, Evanston. on August 12, 2011.²
