A native of Audubon, Iowa he was a local resident 13 years was a veteran of World War II, and a self employed salesman of wholesale goods. Police say he was found in the Southwest corner of the Safeway Super S parking lot at Delaware and Peninsula Avenues at 11:58 p.m. Monday after a citizen reported seeing a man down. Officers reported he had suffered loss of blood from a facial injury but was alive when taken by ambulance to the hospital. An autopsy was being performed to determine cause of death. Survivors include his wife Mary; two daughters, Mrs. Joan D. Torrise and Mrs. Mary Ann Torrise, San Mateo; his mother, Mrs. Ellen L. Gerber, Audubon, Iowa, and 8 grandchildren. Rosary will be recited tonight at 8 o'clock at the Crosby-N. Gray Chapel, Burlingame. Requiem mass will be celebrated tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. at Saint Catherine's Church, Burlingame, with interment at North Platte, Nebr. on February 11, 1971.⁵

Ben proudly served with the US Marine Corps from 1954 thru 1956; and continued to serve in the USMC reserves thru 1961. While stationed in San Francisco, Ben met JoAnna, a nursing student at French Hospital. They married in 1957 in Turlock, CA, and then moved to Denver, CO so could Ben attend the University of Denver. Upon completion of his degree in English Literature, the couple moved back to Fresno where Ben eventually began a fulfilling career in education. Ben retired from teaching in 1995. He taught English at Clovis, Bullard and Madera High schools. He also served as a Master Teacher for California State University, Fresno, preparing English Education majors for teaching. Ben loved sailing, reading, Nebraska Cornhusker football and of course, his family. His smile and lively wit will be sorely missed. A Funeral Mass will be held on September 5, 2014, at the St. Paul Newman Center, at 11:00 a.m. Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be Thursday at 7:00 p.m. in the Chapel. His ashes will be interred at the San Joaquin National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA on Friday, September 12, 2014, at 9:30 a.m. Remembrances may be made to the Nancy Hinds Hospice; or the Catholic Charities. on September 4, 2014.⁴
