She was preceded in death by her husband, Leonard L. Wells; parents, William A. Gillespie and Lillie Stewart Gillespie. She is survived by a son, William D. Wells; daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte and Homer Nester; brother, Robert C. Gillespie and wife, Mary; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law; one brother-in-law; several nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held 1 p.m. Saturday, March 31, 2007 at Sherwood Memorial Park with the Rev. Charles Doyle officiating. on March 30, 2007.³

W., Roanoke, Virginia.² She was born on November 3, 1915 at Brunswick Co., Virginia.^1,3 As of December 19, 1936,her married name was Gillespie.¹ She married Robert Cecil "Bob" Gillespie, son of William Asa Gillespie and Lillie Moton Stewart, on December 19, 1936 at Roanoke, Virginia.^1,2 Mary Elizabeth Lambert died on November 15, 2011 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 96.^2,3 She Mary Elizabeth Lambert Gillespie, 96, of Roanoke, went to be with the Lord Tuesday, November 15, 2011. She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and had been a lifelong member of Melrose United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 75 years, Robert C. "Bob" Gillespie; a granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Rieley; and her five brothers. Surviving are her son & daughter-in-law, Ronald L. & Joyce Gillespie, of Jacksonville, FL; daughters & son-in-law, Shirley G. and G.K. Abshire, of Vinton, and Loretta Rieley, of Forest; six grandchildren, Michael Gillespie, Greg Abshire, Mark Gillespie, Alison Rieley Richardson, Melissa Candies and Benjamin Rieley; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will accept flowers and those wishing to make memorials may do so to Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke, VA 24012. The family would like to give special thanks to the Berkshire Nursing Home for their loving care and support over the past few years. A funeral service will be held noon Friday, November 18, 2011, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. E.E. "Dick" Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. on November 17, 2011.²

     Mildred Ann Wells was buried at Sherwood Burial Park, 1045 Lynchburg Turnpike, Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.⁴ She was born on February 2, 1920 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia.^1,3,4 As of July 15, 1939,her married name was Gillespie.¹ She married Walter Simmerman Gillespie, son of William Asa Gillespie and Lillie Moton Stewart, on July 15, 1939 at Roanoke, Virginia.¹ Mildred Ann Wells and Walter Simmerman Gillespie were divorced on April 26, 1949 at Roanoke, Virginia.² Mildred Ann Wells died on June 18, 1983 at Roanoke, Virginia, at age 63.⁴

     Elva Marie Adkins Elva Marie Adkins Gillespie, 97, of Burlington, Ohio, formerly of East Lynn, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord and loved ones, who are waiting for her in that beautiful place where there will be no more sickness or sorrow on Saturday, February 13, 2016. She was born March 31, 1918, a daughter of the late Elbert and Olga Adkins. Her husband, Lee Trinkle Gillespie also preceded her in death along with four sisters: Blanche Morris, Edith Bennett, Opal Strogilos, and Leona Cremeans, and six brothers: Robert, Paris, Orville, Ersie, Cornis, and Delmer Ray Adkins. Survivors include her sisters Vera Fox, Louise Adkins, both of Burlington, and Betty Adkins of Wayne; one brother Ollin (Bonnie) Adkins of Maryland; grandchildren LeAnna (Daniel) Ball of Louisa, Ky., Danielle Kitts and fiancé Eric of Coldwater, Mich., Daniel Stephens, Tiffany Berry, Chris Clay all of Wayne, and David Skeens; two great grandsons, Rylee Adkins and Evan Ball; one great granddaughter, Taylor Ball; 13 nieces and nephews including her caregiver, Winfred DeLoach, and Eugene (Emma Ray) Adkins; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Brothers Donald “Smoky” Hager and Emual Adkins, and Rev. Luther Dingess officiating. Burial will follow in the Everett Adkins Cemetery.⁴ She was buried at Everett Adkins Cemetery, Winslow, Wayne Co., West Virginia.⁴ She was born on March 31, 1918 at West Virginia.⁴ As of April 7, 1944,her married name was Gillespie.³ She married Lee Trinkle Gillespie, son of William Asa Gillespie and Lillie Moton Stewart, on April 7, 1944 at Orange Co., Florida.^1,2,3,4 Elva Marie Adkins died on February 13, 2016 at Burlington, Licking Co., Ohio, at age 97.⁴

     Dorothy Mae Beckner was buried at Crestview Memorial Cemetery, 489 Smith Church Road, Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Co., North Carolina.² She was born on April 27, 1925 at Roanoke, Virginia.² She married Marion LaFolette Gillespie, son of William Asa Gillespie and Lillie Moton Stewart, on January 27, 1945 at Roanoke, Virginia.¹ As of January 27, 1945,her married name was Gillespie.¹ Dorothy Mae Beckner died on February 22, 2016 at Roanoke Rapids, Halifax Co., North Carolina, at age 90.² She ROANOKE RAPIDS — Mrs. Dorothy Beckner Roope Clifton, 90, of Roanoke Rapids, passed away Monday, Feb. 22, 2016, at Halifax Regional Medical Center. Mrs. Clifton was born April 27, 1925, in Roanoke, Va., the daughter of the late Ted Beckner and Olia Richardson Beckner. She was also predeceased by her first husband, William Alford Roope; her second husband, Thomas Garrett Clifton; her daughter, Linda Roope Overby; a sister, Louise Wray; and a brother, Houston Beckner. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Roope and his wife, DJ, Michael Roope and his wife, Donna, Gary Roope, William (Kenny) Roope and his wife, Sharon; a sister, Clair Gould; two brothers, George Beckner and Aubrey Beckner; also, a special friend and caregiver, Clara Harvey; and special friend, Jackie Walker. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 25 in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Anita Thompson officiating. Interment will follow in Crestview Memorial Cemetery in Roanoke Rapids. on February 24, 2016.²

She was the oldest of twelve children and was preceded in death by her husband, Marion L. Gillespie (Monk). She is survived by a son and daughter-in-law, David and Cathy Hale, Boones Mill; a daughter and son-in-law, Lilly and Roger Wade Sr., Rocky Mount; six grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three brothers; five sisters; and many nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be held on Thursday, May 14, 1998 at 2:00 p.m. Sherwood Memorial Park. on May 13, 1998.⁴

Mr. Wells retired from the Roanoke City School System. He also served in the United States Navy during World War II. Surviving are his wife, Ruth J. Wells, Richmond; one daughter and son-in-law, Charlotte W. and Homer Nester, Glen Allen, Va; one son and daughter-in-law, William D. and Vickie Wells, Lynchburg; five granddaughters; and one great granddaughter; two sisters, Lois Peters, Roanoke and Cecile Nelson, Lexington, N.C; one brother, Kenneth Wells, Roanoke. Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Wednesday, February 7, 1996 at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. Aaron J. Rummage officiating.
