She was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and had been a lifelong member of Melrose United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her devoted husband of 75 years, Robert C. "Bob" Gillespie; a granddaughter, Sara Elizabeth Rieley; and her five brothers. Surviving are her son & daughter-in-law, Ronald L. & Joyce Gillespie, of Jacksonville, FL; daughters & son-in-law, Shirley G. and G.K. Abshire, of Vinton, and Loretta Rieley, of Forest; six grandchildren, Michael Gillespie, Greg Abshire, Mark Gillespie, Alison Rieley Richardson, Melissa Candies and Benjamin Rieley; and 13 great-grandchildren. The family will accept flowers and those wishing to make memorials may do so to Grace United Methodist Church, 4404 Williamson Road NW, Roanoke, VA 24012. The family would like to give special thanks to the Berkshire Nursing Home for their loving care and support over the past few years. A funeral service will be held noon Friday, November 18, 2011, at Oakey's North Chapel with the Rev. E.E. "Dick" Jones officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Lawn Memorial Park. on November 17, 2011.2

Elva Marie Adkins Elva Marie Adkins Gillespie, 97, of Burlington, Ohio, formerly of East Lynn, W.Va., went home to be with her Lord and loved ones, who are waiting for her in that beautiful place where there will be no more sickness or sorrow on Saturday, February 13, 2016. She was born March 31, 1918, a daughter of the late Elbert and Olga Adkins. Her husband, Lee Trinkle Gillespie also preceded her in death along with four sisters: Blanche Morris, Edith Bennett, Opal Strogilos, and Leona Cremeans, and six brothers: Robert, Paris, Orville, Ersie, Cornis, and Delmer Ray Adkins. Survivors include her sisters Vera Fox, Louise Adkins, both of Burlington, and Betty Adkins of Wayne; one brother Ollin (Bonnie) Adkins of Maryland; grandchildren LeAnna (Daniel) Ball of Louisa, Ky., Danielle Kitts and fiancé Eric of Coldwater, Mich., Daniel Stephens, Tiffany Berry, Chris Clay all of Wayne, and David Skeens; two great grandsons, Rylee Adkins and Evan Ball; one great granddaughter, Taylor Ball; 13 nieces and nephews including her caregiver, Winfred DeLoach, and Eugene (Emma Ray) Adkins; and a host of family and friends. Funeral services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday, February 19, 2016 at Johnson Tiller Funeral Home with Brothers Donald “Smoky” Hager and Emual Adkins, and Rev. Luther Dingess officiating. Mrs. Clifton was born April 27, 1925, in Roanoke, Va., the daughter of the late Ted Beckner and Olia Richardson Beckner. She was also predeceased by her first husband, William Alford Roope; her second husband, Thomas Garrett Clifton; her daughter, Linda Roope Overby; a sister, Louise Wray; and a brother, Houston Beckner. She is survived by her sons, Jimmy Roope and his wife, DJ, Michael Roope and his wife, Donna, Gary Roope, William (Kenny) Roope and his wife, Sharon; a sister, Clair Gould; two brothers, George Beckner and Aubrey Beckner; also, a special friend and caregiver, Clara Harvey; and special friend, Jackie Walker. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. today, Wednesday, Feb. 24 at Massey Funeral Home in Roanoke Rapids, which is handling the arrangements. Funeral services will be held at noon Thursday, Feb. 25 in the chapel of the funeral home, with the Rev. Anita Thompson officiating.
