He graduated from Andrew Lewis High School in Salem in 1939; served 11 years in the Navy; and retired from Appalachian Power Co. with more than 30 years of service. Agee was a volunteer fireman for several years and a member of VFW Post 4637. He was a Scoutmaster with the Boys Scout of America and instrumental in the wood badge training. A member of the House of Prayer in Martinsville, he previously attended Fontaine Baptist Church where he served as an ordained deacon and taught the discipleship class for several years. He also had been a home missionary, traveling to several states building churches. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Lois Agee Shank, and four brothers, Richard Wayne Agee, Benjamin Carson Agee, Henry Carroll Agee and William N. Agee. Surviving are his wife, Shirley Draper Agee of the home; one daughter, Sheree E. Washburn of Ridgeway; five sons, Marvin L. Allen of Martinsville, Richard Harvey Agee of Bassett, David Agee of Collinsville, and Gilbert Allen and William Agee, both of Martinsville; two sisters, Shirley Agee Agee and Catherine Agee, both of Roanoke; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. on April 12, 2004.⁹

Shirley was a Christian who raised her daughters in the church. Her happiest times were being with her family, enjoying each other's friendship and meals together. She treasured and loved her family and enjoyed gospel music. Shirley always prayed for her family and hoped they would be saved and live a spiritual life. She was a former employee of Miller and Rhoads and Kenrose Manufacturing Co. and helped with the children at Rainbow Day Care. Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, William A. and Charlotte Cooper Agee; her husband, Carl K. Agee; and her four brothers and one sister. She is survived by her daughters, Linda M. St.Clair, Brenda M. Jones, both of Roanoke, Mary M. Hooker and husband, Ronnie, of Elliston, Peggy M. Dannel and husband, Joe, of Vinton; 10 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; sister-in-law, Katherine W. Agee, of Roanoke; stepchildren, Joey Williams, Lonnie Agee and Fay Weston; numerous stepgrandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren and nephews. A service celebrating her life will be held at Oakey's Vinton Chapel noon Tuesday, September 3, 2013, with the Rev. Dr. James Keaton officiating. Interment will follow in Sherwood Memorial Park. on September 1, 2013.³
