Survivors are: Two sons, Steven Pendergrass of Richlands, Va., Chris Pendergrass and fiancée, Angela Mitchell of Richlands, Va; two sisters, Kathryn Pendergrass of Roanoke, Va., Sandy Kennedy and husband, Gabe of London, Ky; five brothers, John D. Hearn of Roanoke, Va., Tommy Hearn of Moneta, Va., Charles Hearn of Roanoke, Va., Joe Hearn, and Ray Hearn of Moneta, Va; one grandson, Taylor Pendegrass; special friends, Cody Jill Keen, Vickie Keen, Hazel Whited, Caroline Compton. on July 24, 2009.¹

Pendergrass, 60, of Cedar Bluff, formerly of Bartley, WV, died April 18 in a Richlands hospital following a brief illness. He was born in English, WV, and was a son of Hester Dickens Pendergrass of Bartley, WV, and the late Charles Leonard Pendergrass. He was a graduate of Big Creek High School and was a U.S. Army veteran. He had made his home in the Cedar Bluff area for the past 20 years and was a retired mine foreman for Island Creek Coal Company Beatrice Mine and VP-2.      Steven Ray Pendergrass Steven Ray Pendergrass, Feb 20, 1968 - Oct 16, 2024. Steven Ray Pendergrass, 56, of Richlands, Virginia passed away on October 16, 2024, in Salem, Virginia, after battling cancer for three years. Steve was born in Welch, West Virginia, and was the son of the late Charles Ray Pendergrass and Linda Pendergrass. Steve graduated from Richlands High School and continued his education at Southwest Virginia Community College. He loved his community and was a life-long supporter of Richlands Football. He loved children of all ages and volunteered to coach little league football and baseball, alongside his father, Ray. Steven loved his family and friends and the good times they’d share. Steve enjoyed spending time with them, hanging out, and having a good time. He was always fun to be around. He’d often share stories and memories; those stories and memories will never be forgotten. Steve was never at a loss for words and never met a stranger. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Those left to cherish Steve’s memory are his brother Chris Pendergrass and his wife Teresa; one very special nephew, Taylor Pendergrass, and his fiancée, Isabella Martin; two great nieces, whom he loved dearly, RayElle Pendergrass and Ivy Pendergrass; several aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends.² He was born on February 20, 1968 at Welch, McDowell Co., West Virginia.² He died on October 16, 2024 at Salem, Roanoke Co., Virginia, at age 56.²

     Goldie Kathryn Hearn Goldie Kathryn (Hearn) Pendergrass, age 81, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 24th, 2025 in Roanoke, Virginia. Kathryn was born July 14th, 1944 in Bluefield, West Virginia and was a long time resident of Coalwood, West Virginia until 2004, when she moved to Roanoke, Virginia to be close to loved ones and family. Kathryn loved to travel the world and make new memories with friends and family, never missing the opportunity to see a new location. She often talked about her beloved memories made on cruise ships, her trip taken to the north eastern United States and her experiences while traveling in Sweden and Denmark. She enjoyed spending time outdoors tending to her flower beds, bird baths and bird feeders, and soaking in the fresh air and sunshine on warm days. She worked as a nurse at Steven’s Clinic and later Welch Memorial Hospital, dedicating her time to care for those in need. She was an avid Christian, devoting her faith to the Coalwood Methodist and Gospel Light Baptist churches. Kathryn was preceded in death by her husband William “Bill” Pendergrass, mother Lona Olivia (Lowe) Hearn, and father Charles Edward Hearn. She was also preceded in death by her son Mark Hearn, son in law Jack Pellman, grandson Jeffrey Dunker, and siblings Carl “Buddy” Hearn, David Lewis, Linda Pendergrass, and Charles “Bossy” Hearn. Kathryn is survived by her children Tammy Pellman and Scott (Shannon) Pendergrass, and grandchildren Christopher (Jennifer) Dunker, Peter Allen (Erin) Dunker, Nicholas Dunker, Amanda (Nick) Hudson, Olivia (Jay) Phillips, Jamie Pellman, Jillian Pellman, and Julia Pellman (engaged to Tim Horgan). She is blessed to be survived by 22 great-grandchildren, with two additional great-grandchildren expected in May 2026 and June 2026, as well as a great-great grandchild expected in April 2026. She is additionally survived by her siblings John D. Hearn, Sandy Kennedy, Tommy Hearn, Joe Hearn, and Ray Hearn. Born December 5, 1938 in Bartley, he was the son of the late Charles Leonard and Hester Dickens Pendergrass. He was a resident of Coalwood most of his life, was a retired postmaster of Coalwood Post Office and a veteran of the U.S. Army He attended Coalwood United Methodist Church and was preceded in death by two brothers, Charles Ray and James Edward, and two sisters, Mary Frances and Edith Fay. Survivors include: wife, Kathryn Hearn Pendergrass of Coalwood; one son, William Scott Pendergrass of Moneta, Va; one daughter, Tammy Michele Dunker of Rock Springs; one stepson, Mark Kelly Hearn of St. Leonard, Md; one sister, Peggy Joyce Tate of Abingdon, Va; seven grandchildren, Christopher, Jeffery, Peter Allen, Nicholas, and Amanda Dunker of Rock Springs, Olivia Pendergrass of Moneta and Reagen Adams of Coalwood. on December 9, 1997.⁵

     Clark Gable "Gabe" "Dan" Kennedy Clark (Dan) Gable Kennedy, Mar 13, 1947 - Nov 3, 2020. Clark (Dan) Gable Kennedy, age 73, of Lily, Kentucky passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2020. He leaves behind his loving wife, Sandra Hearn Kennedy; four children, Kelly Pendergrass of London, KY, Tommy Pendergrass & wife Teresa of London, KY, Sandy Land & husband Travis of Lily, KY, Michele Keener & husband Doug of West Virginia; one sister, Dorothy Wimmer of Pensacola, FL; twelve grandchildren, Antonia, Precious, K. C., Tara Beth, Brittany, Justin, Blake, Chance, Danielle, Faith, Country, Savana; sixteen great grandchildren, plus a host of other friends and family to mourn his passing. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill Kennedy and Juanita Beavers Kennedy; and by one brother, Monroe Kennedy. Clark owned and operated Kennedy’s Trucking and was also a master mechanic. He loved guns, his country and bluegrass music, and loved to wheel and deal. Most of all he loved his family. Clark was of the Christian faith.      Michael Bernard Swadis was buried at Washington Crossing National Cemetery, 830 Highland Road, Newtown, Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.^1,2,3 He was born on October 14, 1949 at Bucks Co., Pennsylvania.^2,3,4 He died on May 25, 2015 at Pennsylvania at age 65.^1,2,3,4 He Michael Bernard Swadis passed away peacefully Monday, May 25, 2015. He was 65. He was the beloved son of Elline (Hearn) Swadis of Langhorne, and the beloved brother of Sharon Swadis of Philadelphia. He is also survived by Jo Ann and Kenneth Teague (aunt and cousin); Kenneth Miller (best friend); Gail Thompson (cousin); Edward Swagzdis (cousin); William McCool and Shannon Aspite (nephew and niece); three great nieces; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his father, Victor Michael Swadis. Michael was born and raised in Bucks County, and attended Neshaminy High School and Bucks County Community College. He was an accomplished clarinetist, and had a passionate love for music. Michael served proudly in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War, rising to the rank of Lance Corporal. He travelled extensively throughout the United States before retiring to Bucks County several years ago. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends, and will be best remembered for his kind soul and helpful nature. A private interment will be held in Washington Crossing National Cemetery. on May 31, 2015.¹
