Helen Virginia Wyrick was buried at Round Hill Cemetery, Marion, Smyth Co., Virginia.2,8 Her married name was Williams.4 She married Robert Sprinkle Williams.4,3 Helen Virginia Wyrick was born on October 5, 1929 at Princeton, Mercer Co., West Virginia.2,8,3 She died on October 2, 1953 at Bramwell, Mercer Co., West Virginia, at age 23.2,8,3 She Investigators believe that faulty air brakes might have caused the wreck of a run-away trailer truck that took the lives of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sprinkle Williams near Bramwell early yesterday morning. Williams 32, and his wife 23 year old Helen Wyrick Williams, were crushed to death in the cab of their truck when an estimated 15 tons of rock dust he was hauling covered the couple when the big trailer crashed in to a rock wall leading from Rt. 52 to Bramwell. Both bodies were horribly mangled and covered with tons of rock dust until they were almost unrecognizable, Mercer Funeral Home attendants who brought the bodies to Bluefield, pointed out. The trailer truck which was hauling rock dust from the plant at Ripplemead, Giles County, Va. to the mines in McDowell County, was totally demolished. A baby’s shoe was found in the wreckage, leading officers and spectators to think, at first, that a baby might be buried in the debris. They searched through the rock dust and wreckage for some time before learning that the baby, who sometimes rode with the parents in the truck, and her sister, were safe with a neighbor. Nothing but white dust-covered junk remains of the cab of the truck. Scraps of it, including one of the gasoline tanks, still were lying at the crash scene several hours later. At Albert’s Garage, a short distance up the hill from the accident scene, there is one pile of scrap which was the cab. In another pile of scraps are the engine, one gasoline tank, one upright front wheel and one twisted one. Other parts there are unrecognizable. The rear of the truck, the front part of it damaged, sits on another part of the garage lot. Albert’s wrecker turned over in the rock dust as he tried to move the wreckage soon after the accident, but it was only slightly damaged. Although no one can be certain, it is believed Williams lost or used up the air for his air brakes on the long mountain from Pinnacle Rock to Bramwell. Gordon Short, Bramwell police officer, said one woman told him she followed the truck down the mountain and that it was traveling at a slow rate of speed. Suddenly, on a curve about 500 feet above the crash scene, she said the truck shot out of sight. That led observers to think the brakes failed there. Williams may have tried to steer the truck up the road leading to Bramwell, but crashed in to the stone wall before reaching the intersection. The operator of the garage where the debris was taken said these are the fourth and fifth fatalities he remembers at that same site. The truck was a new White flat body truck, with dual axles and a gross weight of 41,000 pounds. It was estimated it was loaded with between 15 and 20 tons of rock dust. The truck was owned by the Iatermont Express of Bluefieid, for which Williams was a driver. Officials of the firm said Williams left for Ripplemead about 7 p.m. Thursday for a load of rock dust. It was due for delivery to either the Crumpler, Kimball or Black Wolf mines, they did not know which. Mr. and Mrs. Williams are survived by two daughters, Carol Sue, 5, and Debra Jane, 3. They attended Midway Christian Church. Mrs. Williams was a waitress at Burnett’s Restaurant in Bluefield. Williams was a veteran of World War II, during which he was wounded twice in the Pacific Theatre. Williams was born April 28, 1921, in Marion, Va., a son of Walter S. and Grace V. Corvin Williams. His survivors, besides his children and parents, include three brothers: John H., Carl C. and Joe D., all of Bluefield, three sisters: Edith Jane and Lillian A., at home, and Mrs. Geneva Perdue of Bluefield. He was preceded in death by one brother. Mrs. Williams was born October 5, 1929, a daughter of the late Arthur Hylton and Maude Hearn Wyrick. Survivors of Mrs. Williams, besides her daughters are two brothers: Harold Wyrick of Roanoke Va., and Marvin Wyrick of Pocahontas, Va., and three sisters: Miss Blanche Wyrick and Mrs. John Sluss, both of Pocahontas, and Frances of Cleveland, O. on October 3, 1953.3
